Chaga birch mushroom grows directly on a tree, and is not edible mushroom... Chaga is used in medicine and cosmetology. Below we give a description of the varieties of chaga, we will tell you how the real one looks like. birch chaga and how to distinguish it from false.

Chaga mushroom - photo and description

Chaga is the fruiting body of a tinder fungus, which outwardly represents a formation in the form of irregular outgrowths (reaching 0.5-2 m in length), the surface of which is uneven and covered with cracks. The weight of the chaga mushroom can be from 2 to 5 kg. The tissue of the outgrowths is heterogeneous both in color and in its structure: being dark brown on the outside, it becomes lighter towards the center of the trunk, towards the wood, while it is speckled with small yellowish veins; very firm and firm above and softer at the base.

Most often, chaga can be seen on broken branches and twigs. The chaga birch fungus develops as follows: spores, hitting, for example, a crack on the surface of a tree (usually the lower and middle parts of the trunk suffer), penetrate the wood, which gradually collapses - it bursts from a build-up that eventually emerges from under the bark. The tree is affected by white heart rot. The false tinder fungus works the same way. For this reason, chaga has long been considered its sterile form. It has now been established that chaga lacks the tubular layer characteristic of tinder fungus, which is much more common than chaga.

The birch chaga mushroom is located under the bark in the form of flat cakes up to 20 cm wide and 3-4 cm thick. As the fungus grows (this may take 10 years or more), the bark on the tree trunk opens and falls off. While the tree is alive, the chaga feeds on its juices, but with age it dies. Chaga is destroyed along with it. In its place appear different kinds tinder fungi that are of no interest from the point of view of medicine.

Where does chaga mushroom grow and what it looks like

Geographically, chaga is widespread. This is the European part of the country, and Western Siberia, and the Far East, and the Urals, and the North Caucasus. Like other types of mushrooms, chaga multiplies by spores, which, settling on the bark of trees damaged by frostbites, sunburn and other types of fungi, germinate, producing numerous hyphae (mushroom filaments). As their number increases, the tree trunk becomes covered with a growth.

The kingdom of mushrooms includes more than 100,000 species, although mycologists tend to believe that there are about 1.5 million of them.At the same time, about 30 species are used for food, and the number of mushrooms used with therapeutic purpose, can be counted almost on one hand.

How is chaga mushroom used

The birch mushroom, or stubby tinder fungus (Inonotusobliquus), has long been used by residents of some regions of Russia to prepare a hot drink that replaces an expensive "colonial" product. Then it was noticed that in those villages where they drink such tea leaves, there are no cases of cancer.

Pharmacological studies of the last century did not answer the question, due to which compounds such an effect is possible, but as a result of clinical trials, the chaga mushroom was approved for use. On its basis, a thick chaga extract, fixed with cobalt sulfate, was released - the drug "Befungin". It is recommended for use in the treatment of stomach and intestinal ulcers, as a general tonic.

But the experience of traditional medicine interprets the effect of birch much broader: it is taken with all types of neglected and inoperable tumors as a means that improves the general condition of the patient, relieves intoxication, and normalizes sleep. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to drink tea from chaga for mastopathy, papillomatosis of the mucous membranes, nodes and a tendency to neoplasms. Chaga has a beneficial effect on the blood formula, improves liver and kidney function, reduces pain and relieves anxiety. Modern studies of fungi from the tinder fungus family have shown their undoubted positive action on the human body, the development of domestic dietary supplements and preparations based on certain types is underway.

Chaga must be distinguished from false, real and bordered tinder fungi and from a birch sponge (fungi of the tinder fungus family).

How to distinguish false chaga from real

Most of all, a false tinder fungus looks like chaga, which does not differ from it either in hardness (woody fabric, it cannot be scratched, usually reddish or chestnut-brown), or in color (all in cracks, the surface of a young mushroom is brownish or reddish in color, covered pale gray down; with age, the mushroom becomes first grayish-black, then black-brown). But at the same time, the false tinder fungus has a cap of the correct shape. In most cases, false tinder fungi are found on stumps or dead trees, which is not typical for chaga.

Real tinder fungi have a hoof-like shape and grow with a plane facing downward, they are attached to a tree exclusively by the center of their upper part, so it is not difficult to tear them off the trunk. In addition, their surface is not as hard as that of chaga, velvety to the touch, gray in color, covered with concentric circles of dark brown color.

The cap of the bordered tinder fungus is yellowish-orange or reddish in color, and it stands out with a growing bright orange-red edge. The surface of the mushroom is saturated with resinous substances, so it often shines.

The birch sponge has a kidney-like shape, slightly wrinkled elastic surface. Birch mushroom tastes bitter and odorless. It consists of three layers: outer (black, bumpy); medium (brownish brown, dense, granular on the cut); internal (reddish brown, loose, streaked with veins).

The chaga birch mushroom, the description of which we have given above, has a characteristic appearance, and few other mushrooms are similar to it. However, it is important to know how to tell the difference between false chaga, especially if you want to treat chaga.

Also, this plant material has a beneficial effect on the immune system, restores metabolic processes, including in brain tissues. In addition, the birch mushroom has antiseptic properties.

This, for example, is mentioned in the novel by Alexander Solzhenitsyn "Cancer Ward". It says here that Russian peasants rarely got cancer, because instead of regular tea they constantly drank chaga. Chaga for cancer can be effective at its initial stage, blocking the growth of pathogenic cells. But in the medical literature it is more often mentioned that this is only a symptomatic medicine, that is, it does not eliminate the cause of cancer, but it relieves pain well, alleviates the general condition of the patient after radiation, chemotherapy, and cleanses the body of harmful substances, toxins.

The use of birch chaga is effective in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract - stomach ulcers and chronic gastritis. In gynecology, they treat fibroids, cysts, inflammation, and erosion of the cervix. It is widely used in oncology as a prophylactic, analgesic, restorative agent. Used externally as an antiseptic.

The chaga mushroom is an asexual form of the tinder fungus belonging to the genus Inonotus of the Basidiomycete division.

Chaga is most often found on a birch

Most often, chaga can be found on a birch tree, or rather, on its trunk, therefore its other name is black birch mushroom. But it can also be found on other trees - alder, mountain ash, beech, elm or maple, but much less frequently. Unlike some other tinder fungi, chaga is not easy to tear off the trunk.
A birch mushroom is chopped off with an ax at the very trunk of a tree, then it is cleaned of bark and loose light part. The colored part of the mushroom, which is healing, is divided into pieces of 3-6 centimeters in size - they are dried in air, in an oven or electric dryer at a temperature of no more than 60 ° C. The drying room must be well ventilated. It is imperative to bring the chaga pieces to complete dryness.

Important! A birch mushroom is not going from an already dead tree, since it has already lost its healing properties... It is also unacceptable to take these growths from the bottom of the trunk for use if birches grow in damp terrain.
