XBOX One S is a new model of the 8th generation gaming platform from Microsoft, replacing the first version of . The game console went on sale on August 6, 2016.

The appearance of the XBOX One S was expected, the refinement and improvement of existing models is carried out by almost all manufacturers of game consoles. The prefix S in the new model means Slim, logically leading to the fact that the prefix has become thinner, and as a result, lighter. And this is true, the game console received reduced dimensions: 295 × 65 × 230 mm for XBOX One S versus 343x81x264 mm for XBOX One, and the weight of the new model decreased from 3.62 kg to 2.1 kg.

The XBOX One S also received other differences from the previous model.

  • XBOX One S case suffered and external changes. Marked glossy inserts have disappeared, the case has become completely matte, and its color is mostly white.

  • XBOX One S got a third USB port

  • Microsoft XBOX One S received a built-in power supply instead of an external one, quite large and recognized by users as inconvenient, as well as noisy and very hot

  • Significantly reduced power consumption during console operation

  • Maximum size hard drive XBOX One S has been upgraded to 2TB

  • The console received support for playing video in Ultra HD format with a resolution of 4K (in the previous model, the resolution is 1080p)

  • New HDMI port with HDR support (HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology reproduces bright and dark scenes with much more colors)

  • The new model has the ability to play discs in Ultra HD Blue-Ray format
  • The XBOX One case is lined with matte plastic and does not have glossy easily soiled elements.
  • Microsoft Xbox One S is capable of turning on other devices such as a TV, receiver, and cable or satellite box. When playing games and watching movies, the built-in IR transmitter will allow you to do everything faster and forget about remote controls. All this is implemented by Microsoft Cortana technology, the connection port of which has taken the former place of the Kinect 2.0 connection port.
  • In Microsoft XBOX One S, with the advent of the Microsoft Cortana port, the connector for Microsoft Kinect 2.0 has disappeared. Now, in order to connect Kinect, you will need Microsoft Kinect Adapter - an adapter with which you can connect Kinect to a regular USB connector
  • Microsoft XBOX One S finally got the ability to install in a vertical position, however, with the help of a special stand that can be purchased with the console
  • The Microsoft XBOX One S gamepad received Bluetooth technology, which not only doubled the radius of its reach of the set-top box, but also allows you to connect it to computers and mobile devices based on Windows 10 and older. This gives the gamepad a distinct advantage over the competition*
The gamepad has received a sleeker and more streamlined design, as well as a textured surface that creates additional comfort during the game. Also Microsoft XBOX One Wireless Controller has finally found a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

The advantages of the novelty are on the face, and the updated complete gamepad has become more attractive and functional, thanks to expanded compatibility with other devices and the convenience of connecting via Bluetooth.

On the acquisition of the XBOX One S game console, our qualified specialists will be happy to advise you and assist you in choosing.

If you're primarily a PC gamer and entertainer, there's only one reason to buy a Microsoft Xbox One S: you've already got or are considering getting a 4K HDR TV and you need a relatively affordable yet feature-packed media box to unlock its potential.

As a game console, the Xbox One S is only part of another niche in Microsoft's lineup. At $299 for the 500GB version, it costs $50 more than existing version Xbox One with the same features, but at 1080p. Microsoft is assuring us that the One S will scale games to 4K, but this thinner Xbox One will almost certainly be forgotten when the more powerful 4K-capable Microsoft Scorpio hits the market during Winter Break 2017.

Three generations of Xbox: Xbox 360 (left), Xbox One C (center), and Xbox One (right)

But unlike Sony with its PlayStation 4, in Microsoft's case it always seemed like the company was planning the Xbox One as a gateway for its living room software and services. And it doesn't matter if this system is positioned as a universal media box or as the best platform for exclusive console games. In any case, the company has built this device tightly into the Windows ecosystem. During the Windows 8 era, Microsoft introduced an app that allows you to control your console from your computer. With the advent of Windows 10, enticing features such as video streaming from Xbox One to PC, as well as a number of other features that are just getting ready to launch, come with it.

Microsoft has released the August update for Xbox One - what some might call the Windows 10 Anniversary Update - and the Xbox One S will be the first model to showcase support for new media. Yes, this one is thin. Xbox console One looks attractive, but the mere fact that its size has been reduced by 40% is not its main advantage. Compactness is, of course, important, but not as important as the ability to transfer 4K content to a TV screen.

4K: Reason to buy Xbox One S

After 3D TVs stopped attracting so much attention, manufacturers began to offer consumers the next visible advantage: 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD). And to make them even more compelling, they've taken their latest TVs to the next level of quality and showcased High Dynamic Range (HDR).

And if the benefits of HDR are difficult to appreciate until you have another TV in front of you, but already without HDR, then the benefits of using 4K are visible to the naked eye. The extra resolution adds a sense of reality that 1080p still lacks. In addition, there is more and more content in 4K format, which is another argument for the purchase. Now we are talking It's not just about content from Netflix and YouTube videos anymore - you can buy movies on 4K Blu-ray disc.

Thus, support for 4K Blue-ray discs, as well as streaming video in 4K and HDR formats, reduces the cost of a multimedia system - just like in the case of the Sony PlayStation 3 in 2006. (By the way, Sony announced its plans to The fact remains that 4K content looks great on screen, whether streaming from Amazon or Netflix, recording from YouTube, or playing from 4K discs. HDR Blu-ray.

A scene from a 4K version of a Star Trek movie looks great thanks to the quality of the media, as well as the Xbox One S

However, the level of the wow factor depends on what you will be watching. Microsoft is offering a 4K Blu-ray recording of the 2009 Star Trek movie, but the brown-orange palette of the movie doesn't show that much difference in our opinion. In addition, the drawing has become clearer and more detailed. Netflix and YouTube offer far more impressive videos, especially the vibrant wildlife footage that TV makers use to showcase their new products.

By the way, S will support games with HDR. But the first copies of this family, such as Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and Scalebound, will appear only in a few months.

Microsoft's Mike Ybarra also said that the One S will upscale video in games to 4K resolution. But if that's the case, we didn't see any obvious signs of this capability in the One S. Even the 4K HDR display that was used to test the console in the PC World lab showed no difference. Keep in mind that the "upscaling" technology only does pixel interpolation, which is very different from in-game video processing and displaying textures specifically designed for 4K resolution.

Suitable for living room

Unlike the original Xbox One, the One S really does look like a media box that will fit perfectly into your existing living room. It is 29.5 cm wide (or height if the console is placed vertically) 22.8 cm deep and 5.1 cm thick, while the original Xbox One is 33 cm wide and 28 cm deep.

In addition to being a new version The console has a 40% smaller volume (as we reported earlier), it has one more bonus: a massive power supply is already built into the case. This very nice addition makes the One S's 2.98kg mass about 0.7kg lighter than the original Xbox One, which is even more impressive.

The Xbox One S model has a third USB located on the front panel

Cooling becomes a priority. The ribbed front panel appears to be devoid of air vents. But even if you put the console horizontally, there will be enough small spaghetti diameter holes on the top and sides to complement the large cutouts in the case. And while it's supposed to have a second grille inside to protect the components, it's interesting how much cat hair and other debris will build up inside the One S while using the console. When clean, however, the One S remains cool to the touch even without much fan noise when running in an air-conditioned apartment or well-ventilated office.

Microsoft has adapted the One S to work both vertically and horizontally. The low-profile stand, which comes free with the 2TB version, fits snugly over one side of the console by simply inserting two plastic tabs into small slots. With the stand attached, the Xbox One can be positioned vertically. It will not fall even if you give it a little push, but it is unlikely to withstand an accidental kick by a disgruntled cat's paw.

When it comes to base fit on the Xbox One S, once you secure it, you get a near-perpetual console fixation system. In particular, one of our editors was deeply disappointed when he realized that his entertainment center was designed for a generation of horizontal DVD and video players, and not for aesthetic vases and cable modems. Microsoft explains that the kickstand is removable, but detaching it is not for the faint of heart. It is attached very securely, so it is better to think in advance where and how to place the console. Also the kickstand covers the entire side of the console, but the cooling system must take that into account. We played Forza Motorsport 6 and Grand Theft Auto 5 for over an hour, and even with the stand, the console stayed cool to the touch. By the way, we never heard how her fan works.

Back side of Xbox One S

On the back of the One S are two HDMI ports, one for output and one for TV input, as well as a pair of USB 3.0 ports, SPDIF, a LAN interface, and an infrared port. The front panel contains a third, unlabeled USB port for USB drives, a button for syncing with the controller, an IR receiver, a power button, and a button for ejecting game discs. One S does not have a dedicated port for Kinect. And for those who already own a Kinect, when replacing their original Xbox, they can order a free USB adapter to connect it. (Microsoft didn't give us a review adapter, so we can't say how well it works.)

Xbox One controller (left) and new Xbox One S controller (right)

Apart from the change in color scheme from black to white with black accents, only very subtle changes separate the standard Xbox One controller from the Xbox One S controller. These include a textured back that feels better in hands even when they are wet, and 3.5mm audio jack on the front panel, which allows you to easily connect a headset or headphones. The new One S controller is Bluetooth-enabled and can also work together with PCs and Windows 10 without the hassle of an adapter or cable.

The fine texture on the white One S controller helps keep it from slipping in wet hands

Otherwise, both controllers are nearly identical, walking the One S model and appearing a bit more flattened on the sides, possibly making the One S even smaller. provide the same amount of space for play movements.

The interface is faster ... it seems to be faster

Gamers tend to focus on the frame rate, visual quality, and graphics power that is available on their console. However, one of the shortcomings of the original Xbox One is another setting − long time downloads. Currently, our model takes as much as 1 minute and 20 seconds just to load the main user interface and 1 minute 47 seconds before all standard notifications disappear (for example, "external storage is ready"). Well, One S did it in just 45 seconds.

However, if you compare the results with those provided by the standard Surface Pro 4 based on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, then 45 seconds also seems like an eternity. On SP4, booting takes between 20 seconds on a cold start and 3 seconds on wakeup. Clearly, there is plenty of room for improvement here. But the fact that you can't (officially) replace the internal hard drive with an SSD is evidence that its performance is still weak. place. And even if you do, switching to an SSD will significantly increase the price of the console while reducing storage, unless you have enough money to buy a 2TB SSD.

Another problem is that the user interface itself seems to take a while to "warm up". The first time you try to open the left sidebar of the interface, the system seems to "freeze" for a second or two. Navigating between menu sections using the side buttons is a satisfying speed, though every time the One S doesn't seem to recognize the button press.

And as you move through each individual panel, there are other minor annoyances. They stem from legacy user interface design: when the Xbox One first came out, it was positioned as a living room entertainment device. For example, you can view highlights from NBA games in the OneGuide app list box. And the problem is that the switching is too slow, because it is designed for voice commands - both from the headset and through the Kinect sector, for which they were originally designed.

In some countries, Xbox One S may be your interactive TV guide. When watching certain series, you can see what people are saying about them on Twitter. After all, is it bad to know what people think who are watching the final series of Game of Thrones or some other hit at the same time as you

Benefits of working with Windows 10

With the advent of Windows 10 and Microsoft's cloud services, discussing the Xbox One S as a standalone console, like the Nintendo Wii U, for example, is an oversimplification. As part of the Windows 10 ecosystem, the Xbox One S device (like the original Xbox One) can use apps such as the Microsoft Edge browser. It can also run external applications, such as Netflix.

In addition, Windows 10 has built-in features to integrate with Xbox. The Anniversary Update brings improvements such as higher frame rates (up to 60 fps) when recording games on Windows 10 PCs, cross-platform access to Xbox Play Anywhere games, and dedicated Game Centers for PC.

On Xbox One and One S, Cortana is officially introduced for the first time (as a way to send voice commands through a headset). In many ways, Cortana simply replaces the familiar "Xbox, [do it]" commands, for example, to switch to the TV window during the game. In certain situations, it is also rather slow to respond, but the Microsoft hardware platform, if properly configured, will be able to clearly recognize voice commands even in a rather noisy environment. For owners of the original Xbox One who were frustrated by the Kinect's lack of a clear enough response to voice commands, a software update has been released that may warrant some improvement.

But these updates also come with certain performance issues. In particular, our experience with game video streaming (which allows Windows 10 PC users to remotely control and play games on their Xbox One) has proven to be far less effective on the One S than on the original console.

Although we completely restored all the previous settings, the Xbox One S was still an order of magnitude slower and its performance level remained unsatisfactory. Once we were able to connect the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to the One S and play Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 2 at medium settings. There were only a few random outages, but the next day the computer couldn't even find the One S online.

Luckily, things worked out better in games like the older The Witcher 3, which probably had less bandwidth to stream video from. So when streaming, a lot depends on the game itself, the quality of the network and its bandwidth, as well as many other factors. In general, from our point of view, the result was not so good.

That being said, the wireless connection between the controller and the Xbox One S was excellent. And while it's easy to connect the controller to your computer via Bluetooth (just press the Pair button on the controller), it's possible, as in our case, you will get a connection to the console first. It is possible that this played a major role in the appearance of our problems with video streaming. since we were never able to set up the game on a PC with a controller connected to it.

Yes, Xbox One S handles games just fine

Despite everything, we have not yet forgotten that the Xbox is a game console. Maybe you like to play different games on console (Halo is yet to be released on PC, after all), or maybe you want to play more often and faster. If that's the case, you can rest assured that the One S delivers almost the same gaming experience as the Xbox One.

There are minor differences due to hardware improvements. In particular, in the initial version of the Xbox One S is equipped with a capacious 2 TB drive, which allows you to store games locally and quickly launch them. (That being said, a cheap external USB hard drive connected to the original Xbox One provides the equivalent amount of storage with acceptable performance.) Games that use HDR capabilities are also on the way - we mean Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 - but they will hit the market, perhaps in a few months.

Also, the One S is supposed to upscale games to 4K resolution, but we haven't seen any indication that this is actually happening. We connected the Xbox One and One S to different HDMI ports on the same 4K display and then played the same games to see the difference. For the games we ran, both consoles gave the same result in terms of picture quality, however, we also did not notice differences in frame rates.

(By the way, the Eurogamer report noted that the One S is 7% faster than the One at 914MHz vs. 853MHz, resulting in a marginally higher framerate of 2 to 5fps in some games and under certain conditions. Again, we didn't notice a frame rate difference between the two consoles.)

“The quality of the scaling will vary depending on the game or application,” Microsoft replied when we asked why we got results. Therefore, the effect of this feature will depend on how good and extensive its support will be in the future.

Is this console worth buying?

From our point of view, the released One S is something similar to a modified American car for the European market. The device has various new features that will help to interest a new audience.

For PC lovers who already own an Xbox One console and those who aren't planning on buying a 4K TV, we would advise you not to spend money and wait for Project Scorpio, which will be released in 18 months. By then, 4K TVs should be better and cheaper, and before that, any console exclusives that also launch on Xbox One can be played.

However, if you've already invested in 4K hardware and want to either play the new Halo or get a more versatile 4K Blu-ray player, then why not? The One S continues Microsoft's vision and is an improved all-in-one device that can handle 4K generation displays.

Microsoft Xbox One S

Advantages:

a capacious 2 TB HDD will accommodate all your games;

it's 4K, which is great, of course;

the console is more compact, but has no cooling issues.

Flaws:

if you do not have a 4K TV, then there will be no pluses;

the stand is almost impossible to detach;

in about a year, Project Scorpio will be released.

Conclusion: The Microsoft Xbox One S may look smaller, but it remains nothing more than a redesigned version of the Xbox One to run at 4K resolution.

Price:$399

The updated Xbox One S is Microsoft's answer to the PlayStation 4 Slim. The novelty has also been reduced in size and repainted in white, the power supply has moved inside, and the price has dropped to $ 300 for a version with a 500 GB hard drive. 1 and 2 TB models are also offered, which, given the low speed of downloading games from the digital Xbox Store, is quite justified. The Xbox One S Wireless Controller has also been improved.

soap graphics

The main drawback of the original Xbox One - a graphics accelerator with a performance of only 1.4 teraflops - was inherited by the One S version. Most games on the Microsoft console run at a resolution of only 1280x720 pixels, which makes the picture look fuzzy and blurry.

Favorable special offers

However, for non-graphically demanding users, the Xbox One S can be a very good buy. So, for a set of a console plus two games (Forza Horizon 3 racing and FIFA 17 football simulator) they ask for only a little more than for the console itself. Both games are new and, given the multiplayer, they will be enough for several months of entertainment. True, for access to multiplayer, an additional monthly fee is charged.

Game consoles have firmly entered our lives. Previously, each individual model was independent of the previous ones, and could only play those games that were intended for it. Nowadays, in the age of wide popularization of games, and gaming in general, game consoles have acquired the ability to use the game libraries of other console models.

Meet! The new model of the game console from Microsoft - Xbox One X!

It opens up new gaming possibilities, allows you to plunge headlong into an attractive virtual world and allows you to try something that we could not even dream of before!

The developers of the company have equipped it with the ability to be backward compatible with the Xbox One S and Xbox 360, so that everyone can create an incredible library of old games that they already love, as well as new exclusive releases for the Model X. Also, games from the Xbox One X will be ported to the previous model. company - Xbox One S.

Compared to earlier models Xbox series, One X has increased power, and, consequently, performance. Now each of us has the opportunity to enjoy incredible image quality in Ultra HD resolution, while older models display Full HD images. This leap is truly mind-blowing, as consoles now rival the graphics quality of even the most powerful computers.

The Xbox One X 1TB is priced at $499, but rest assured, that money won't be wasted.

Great design

The design of the console has undergone changes compared to the Xbox One S, but there are undoubtedly similarities, because at the time of the release of the Xbox One S, many were very impressed with the design of the console, and Microsoft decided not to go far ...

XBOX One X has a smaller size, making it more compact and convenient to place anywhere in your home or apartment.
You can buy Xbox One X in gray, which looks stylish, modern and very futuristic.

The front panel features a neat and tidy disc slot, a launch button with the iconic Xbox badge, a USB port, an IR receiver, and a headset and gamepad sync button. The design of the front is very similar to the previous version, but the location of the drive slot has changed: now it is located at the bottom of the console.

Taking a look at the rear of this "miracle" of technology from Microsoft, you will see two USB ports, an HDMI output and a separate input, a power connector, an infrared output, an Ethernet port and an optical audio output.

The Xbox One X controller is functionally identical to the Xbox One S controller, the only difference is the visual design: a beautiful gray finish that complements the console itself.

Characteristics

Even before the official presentation of the console, its incredible specifications that determined the success of the project.

The new model is equipped with an 8-core process with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz, 12 GB GDDR5 RAM. The console will have an astounding 6 teraflops of graphics power thanks to a 1172 MHz GPU. "Box" has an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and the amount of memory is 1 TB.

Thanks to the combination of Dolby Atmos and a Blu-ray player, the console received more extensive hardware capabilities. Many were skeptical that it did not use GPUs from the most popular companies such as AMD and Nvidia, but what Microsoft managed to create amazed many. The console is really powerful and productive!

Gaming Power

Many people think that comparing Microsoft consoles and PlayStation models is difficult to say which one is more powerful and why. But it is enough to pay attention to the technical characteristics and you will not have such a question. Craftsmen from Microsoft have taken a big step into the future with the help of Xbox One X.

It was not in vain that we were assured of the incredible abilities of internal iron. Even before the official presentation, the developers said that new game Forza 7 will be streamed in Ultra HD resolution at 60 frames per second. And you know they didn't lie! But this was not the limit of development.

At the official demonstration of gaming capabilities, company employees demonstrated Forza Motorsport 7 and Gears of War 4

They made a real splash! Playing Forza 7 on the Xbox One X console, you could see the car in detail not only inside, but also outside. Even the steering wheel trim looks so detailed and crisp that it sometimes feels like it's a real racing sports car. Even with the camera zoomed out, the outside of the car looks great.

But what really struck everyone was the elaboration of the game: when the car develops high speed, the external parts begin to rattle from the headwind, every little detail starts to move. Believe me, it looks incredible!

A closer look at Gears of War 4 immediately catches the eye with a chic elaboration of lighting, as well as clear shadows under the heroes' feet, which can only be demonstrated in Ultra HD. The company's developers have stated that they will gradually render all games in 4K image, and this news certainly makes you think about buying an Xbox One X as soon as possible.

There will also be opposite compatibility. Then the logical question arises: “Why buy new prefix Xbox One X, which is priced slightly higher, if it would seem that this situation is more beneficial for owners of Xbox One S? This is not true.

Microsoft Xbox One S is a 2016 game console with a 4K Blu-ray player and support for HDR content. This time, the developers have worked on the mistakes that they made three years ago on Xbox One.

The advantages of the set-top box are a compact body, a modern set of communications, 4K video playback from Blu-Ray discs, a large amount of internal memory and compatibility with Xbox One. But its main advantage is a quality fit. Full HD resolutions up to 4K and support for HDR content.

But to enjoy a wide dynamic range and a clear picture, you need a modern 4K TV. In addition, in a year, Microsoft plans to release a new set-top box called Project Scorpio, which means that the new Xbox will automatically become obsolete.

The Xbox One S doesn't feel like a new console, but like a compact version of the Xbox One with bug fixes. It is most reasonable to buy a predecessor, which should be very cheap, or wait for a new, more powerful model in next year. You can choose the Xbox One S if you have a 4K TV with HDR support. This is the only way you can appreciate the benefits of these technologies.

Design

Microsoft Xbox One S received an updated design. Now it is a rectangular block of white color with compact dimensions.

The main body material is matte plastic. It may not look as beautiful, but it is more practical, unlike the semi-gloss case of the PlayStation 4. An important innovation is that the power supply is finally placed inside the case, and not taken out, as it was before. At the same time, the console itself has become 40% more compact. The body of the Xbox One S is visually divided with a black stand that seems to fade into darkness. On the right-top, the body of the device is perforated, there are also ventilation holes. All this looks unusual, but personally, such colors and perforations reminded us more of a Soviet radio receiver, rather than a modern gaming machine. On the front panel, you can see the optical drive and the power key, stylized as the Xbox logo. Below them are a USB 3.0 connector and an IR transmitter.

Xbox One S can be mounted either horizontally or vertically. In the second case, the console is not so reliable, besides, the manufacturer, as it were, hints at the main use case with horizontal inscriptions on the case. Xbox One S dimensions - 29.5 × 23 × 6.4 cm, weight - 2.9 kg. The console is only slightly thicker than the PlayStation 4, but 0.4 kg lighter.

Interfaces

Microsoft Xbox One S is equipped with a fairly modern set of ports and interfaces.

At his disposal are:

  • three USB 3.0 ports (external media, headsets, and so on)
  • HDMI 2.0a output for TV connection
  • HDMI input
  • optical audio output (for soundbar or sound systems)
  • network port (up to 1000 Mbps)
  • IR blaster output.

Note that HDMI has been updated to version 2.0a, so it now supports HDR and 4K video transmission at 60Hz. The separate connector for the Kinect touch controller has been eliminated, but it can be connected to the set-top box via a USB adapter.

Xbox One S supports more advanced high-speed and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac. We've finally added Bluetooth, which should make it easier to connect joysticks and other peripherals. The set-top box has not just an infrared port, but also an infrared blaster, with which the Xbox One S is able to control other household devices. The optical drive supports the classic Blu-Ray gaming media. And unlike the new PlayStation 4 Pro, it plays 4K video from Blu-ray discs.

Hardware stuffing

It sounds surprising and even strange, but the inside of the Xbox One S has remained almost the same. Microsoft has only marginally overclocked video and eSRAM bandwidth. It seems that the company decided to save the hardware upgrade for the next Project Scorpio set-top box, which is scheduled for release in 2017.

The Xbox One S uses an 8-core AMD Jaguar processor running at up to 1.75 GHz. As graphics, there is an AMD chip based on Radeon with an increased frequency (914 MHz instead of 853 MHz). At the same time, performance increased slightly - from 1.31 Teraflops to 1.4, which means 1.4 trillion operations per second. As before, 8 GB of unified (common for CPU and GPU) DDR3 RAM is used. Note that the PlayStation 4 has long used faster memory such as GDDR5. The difference in lagging behind the competitor is solved with the help of an eSRAM buffer with increased bandwidth, which has grown from 204 to 219 GB / s.

As you already understood, the filling remained the same as that of its predecessor. But where does the power come from to support higher 4K resolution and HDR content? The secret is simple: it's just an upscaling of Full HD to Ultra HD, albeit better than TVs. This means that PC gaming will be sharper at true 4K resolution.

To enjoy the graphics improvements, you'll need a 4K TV that supports HDR content. In addition, the game must meet these innovations, and there are still few of them. Separately, we note that you still have to suffer to make the TV work in this mode and recognize the HDR signal from the set-top box. On sale, you can find several versions of the Xbox One S - with a 500 GB, 1000 GB or 2 TB HDD. Unlike the PlayStation 4, you cannot change the hard drive in the console, but you can connect external media. In terms of device performance, we found the Xbox One S to be noisier and games to take a long time to install.

Joystick

The Xbox One S joystick has undergone a slight redesign, but has not fundamentally changed. This is the same convenient gamepad, but in our opinion, it began to look a little frivolous.

The plastic material has become more rough, thanks to which the joystick lies more securely in the hand. Finally, the gamepad got Bluetooth. Analog sticks received a special texture along the rims, due to which they will not slip under the fingers. As before, pressing the D-pad (d-pad) is clear, the triggers on the back side can vibrate, which gives feedback in games.

The joystick weighs 280 grams and runs on two AA batteries. The Kinect touch controller has not been abandoned, but it is not included in the basic package. Moreover, a special connector for it has disappeared from the body of the set-top box, so you will have to buy an adapter along with it.

Menu, multiplayer and more

Nothing has changed in this setting. The console is backward compatible with Xbox One - games, applications and branded features work on the new console.

As before, the main menu is divided into four sections: Home, Community, OneGuide and Store. The first contains a list of games and previously launched applications. The Community contains social features, OneGuide contains video content, and the Store contains a branded store with games, videos, music and more. Some games for the novelty have the possibility of multiplayer with PC owners.

The built-in Xbox One S player plays almost all audio and video formats. Many applications for the set-top box (ivi cinema, YouTube service, browser and some others) are free, but a subscription to the service Xbox Live for multiplayer is worth the money. Once a month, Gold subscribers can download several games for free. But as a rule, these are not the most popular toys.
