Today it is hard to believe, but the famous Xbox 360 was released already in the fall of the distant 2005. That is, when smartphones were still not “smart” at all, and were called differently, BlackBerry and Nokia completely dominated the mobile device market, and the gaming market was almost equally divided between game consoles and desktop computers. In general, everything was quite balanced.

However, the period of equilibrium did not last long.

Soon, Apple brought a radical turmoil into this alignment, moreover, twice: in 2007, when Steve Jobs introduced the world to the first iPhone, and in 2010, when the iPad tablets went on sale.

A real one happened, which changed not only the markets, but also the worldview of the mass user, who now receives and sends information in a completely different way, consumes media content and plays electronic games. Today, everyone has smartphones and tablets, and if someone else has not managed to acquire any of these devices, then they are undoubtedly going to buy it in the near future.

Many manufacturers of gaming electronics are also well aware of the fact of the growth in the spread of mobile devices and are very successfully using the moment by offering gamers relevant and useful solutions. So Microsoft literally a few days after the start of sales Xbox One quickly released a mobile app that allows users to connect their smartphones and tablets to new console and access its various features.

If you already have an Xbox 360 (if you don't, then we recommend you consider buying as the prices for these consoles are currently extremely attractive - here), then you are obviously already familiar with SmartGlass.

The program allows you to use the console interface from a mobile device, run games, various applications and social functions, in particular, view your achievements, read messages, etc.

Of course, the newer SmartGlass for Xbox One is slightly different than SmartGlass for Xbox 360 in the sense that it should be faster, more stable because, according to Microsoft, Xbox One was originally designed with SmartGlass capabilities in mind.

The SmartGlass app for Xbox One is available for download on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows 8, and Windows RT mobile devices. To be more precise, the program works with smartphones and tablets on Android 4.0 and higher, Windows Phone 7.5 and higher, as well as iPhone from 3GS and all others, 4th generation iPod Touch players and iPad tablets.

To connect a smartphone and / or tablet to the Xbox One, you must first make sure that both the mobile device and the console itself are connected to the same local network, then open SmartGlass on the mobile device and then simply click the “Connect” button, after which the program will show console on the screen.

If this does not happen, then you need to double-check the connection of the Xbox One and the smartphone (or tablet) to the network, and then click Connect again.

If you can’t connect again, you will have to go to the application settings and enter the console IP address manually (you can find it in the console settings - Network section, Advanced Settings tab).

What can SmartGlass do?

Well, in fact, after connecting to Xbox One via SmartGlass, a smartphone or tablet automatically turns into a fully functional wireless game with the usual control buttons - A, B, X and Y, and at the same time a remote control. In addition, there is an interesting companion function that displays additional information on the screen of the mobile device. For example, at a certain point in Dead Rising 3, the smartphone turns into a "Personal Digital Zombie Control and Defense Assistant" through which you can interact with NPCs, calling for airstrikes and giving other instructions.

And Finally, a couple of little tips:
1. so that during the game (or just when working with SmartGlass) the screen of a smartphone or tablet does not turn off, you need to activate the Stay Awake option in the application settings;
2. To quickly find a game, movie, music track or application, you can use the search function, the corresponding box in the new SmartGlass is located next to the Connect button.

For more than a year now, there has been talk that Xbox One, universal apps will start working and the ability to listen to music in the background will become available. Microsoft has started moving from talk to action, and more and more universal Windows 10 apps are showing up on the console for beta testers.

The Groove Music app has been released in a universal version for Xbox One firmware beta testers. The program will allow you to listen to music simultaneously with the game, for this you need to have a paid Groove subscription or put tracks in OneDrive. Beta testers may notice that they currently have two Groove programs available - one regular and one generic - things will get better later. AT this moment background listening to music is not yet available in Groove.

The second universal application that became available to beta testers is Cast. The program allows you to listen to podcasts, including during the game. This application is capable of running in the background.

The third universal application is Weather and Time. There is nothing particularly interesting in it - just the owners of the console have the opportunity to watch the weather for a day or the next few days.

If you are a beta tester and fall into the limited group of testers to whom Microsoft has opened access to universal applications, then you can find them in the list of games and programs available for installation.

It is worth recalling that the full release of the currently tested version of the firmware should take place on August 2.
