In the early days of comics, there were a few female crime fighters, but it was Wonder Woman who became the first female superheroine. She debuted in All Star Comics #8 in December 1941.

The character of Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston. Her story follows the adventures of Princess Diana of Themyscira, the clay-born daughter of Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons.

The Greek gods gave Diana superhuman strength, intelligence and beauty, speed and the ability to fly. Raised on Paradise Island among the Amazons, she traveled to "Men's World" where she took on the secret identity of Diana Prince.

In 1968, poor sales gave Wonder Woman a modern take. The Amazons went to another dimension and Wonder Woman's power ceased to exist, so Diana became an ordinary person with Taekwondo knowledge. Immediately after losing her strength, her young man Steve Trevor is killed, and Diana begins to take revenge.

Along with the loss of her powers, Diana stops wearing the costume and simply dresses in the clothes of that era. But this decision did not bring popularity and sales. Moreover, the release of the series was planned, so the publishing house in 1972 returned the powers of Wonder Woman and her classic red and blue costume.

The first version of the series

First appearance: TV movie Wonder Woman (1974)

The first attempt at adapting Wonder Woman was a 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby. The film was a pilot for an upcoming series, but its poor success led Warner Brothers and ABC to start developing another version a year later. Crosby did not wear the traditional Wonder Woman shorts and tiara, instead wearing blue leggings and a red jacket with long blue sleeves with white stars on them. In this adaptation, Diana's secret identity was not a secret.

The series' pilot (which began on ABC) followed the original story from the comics. The place of her birth and the time in the war underwent minor changes.

To show the reincarnation from Diana Prince to Wonder Woman in the series, rotation was used, which later transferred to the animated series Justice League. In the comics, Wonder Woman used a lasso around her body.

The costume was inspired by the classic comic book costume, and the promotional photo also featured a cape.

Reboot 80s

The next film adaptation with the appearance of Diana was the animated series Justice League (2001 - 2004) produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network. The animated series was based on the comics, and when most of the characters remained the same, Diana underwent small changes.

Her backstory, including gaining the title of Wonder Woman in the Competition, how she ended up in Man's World, and her later legend, is reminiscent of George Pérez's interpretation. She does not keep a secret, but wears a traditional costume, although her lasso does not appear later.

Wonder Woman was first revealed to the world in All Star Comics #8. According to the plot of the comic, the plane of a certain Steve Trevor (Steve Trevor) crashed over the ocean; fortunately for the pilot, his plane crashed on a mysterious island inhabited by the Amazon tribe. Over time, Steve began an affair with one of the Amazons, Diana (Diana); ultimately it was Diana who was assigned to go with Trevor to the "world of men". Shortly after arriving in the States, Diana met her namesake and doppelgänger, nurse Diana Prince; she needed a large sum of money for a trip to South America to her fiancé. Wonder Woman supplied the nurse with the required amount, in return for getting the right to use her documents and name. In the image of Diana Prince, the Amazon worked as a nurse, in the image of Wonder Woman she fought with all sorts of villains (often - representatives of the Nazi forces).

At the beginning of the "silver age of comics", the image of Wonder Woman was somewhat revised; now it was much less connected with World War II and much more with classical Greek myths; thus, Diana's unusual abilities were now explained by divine blessing.

Later, Diana lost her abilities - she had to give up the divine gift and the opportunity, together with the Amazons, to move to a parallel dimension. Lost strength had to be worked out by hard training; however, even without divine blessing, Diana Prince turned out to be a rather dangerous opponent for a variety of villains. Along with the forces, by the way, Diana also lost her signature costume; for a long time she had to use all sorts of overalls and soldier's costumes.

At the beginning of the "Bronze Age", Diana's strength and costume returned; however, she did not have to stay in the restored status for long - the events of the series "Crisis on Infinite Earths" ("Crisis on Infinite Earths") led to a radical revision of all the storylines of the DC universe. In the new story, Wonder Woman has become the official ambassador and representative of Themyscira Island to the male world; Diana's mission was predominantly peacekeeping in nature. Many fragments from classical Greek myths were generously mixed into the updated biography of Diana. Finally, Diana Prince's romance with Steve Trevor disappeared from the updated universe. The history of the origin of Diana herself was also considered more carefully - the Queen of the Amazons Hippolyta (Hippolyta) created Diana from clay, breathing life and divine powers into her.

There were many difficulties in Prince's peacekeeping mission; so, before the start of the "War of the Gods" series, the Amazons were accused of a number of serious crimes, from theft of valuable artifacts to murder. A number of Amazons were arrested, the Amazon queen Hippolyta disappeared, and Steve Trevor was given direct orders to attack the island of Themyscira. In the end, it became known that the witch Circe (Circe) was behind the incident; at some point, she even managed to deal with Wonder Woman herself, turning her back into clay. Wonder Woman managed to rise from the clay and - with the help of superhero Donna Troy - defeat Circe.

Wonder Woman had a chance to play a key role in another global event of the DC universe - Infinite Crisis (Infinite Crisis). To some extent, the beginning of the crisis was facilitated by the fact that Wonder Woman killed the villain Maxwell Lord, who managed to take control of Superman himself.

Wonder Woman in all her incarnations was distinguished by a certain pragmatism and, unlike the same Superman and Batman, could kill if necessary. The murder of the Lord through the efforts of another character became public knowledge; Diana was accused of cold-blooded murder - which, in turn, seriously quarreled with her saved Batman and Superman.

After the end of Infinite Crisis, Wonder Woman briefly abandoned her heroic alter ego and focused on the Department of Metahuman Affairs; Donna Troy appropriated the image of Wonder Woman for a while. Later, Diana had to return to heroism - in order to save Donna from Hercules (Hercules) and Circe.

Another revision of the storylines - "The New 52" - again changed the origin of Diana; now she was no longer a piece of clay magically animated, but a demigoddess, the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and Zeus himself. Of the many events in the new universe, Wonder Woman's romance with her fellow Justice Leaguer, Superman, attracted readers' most attention. Wonder Woman has appeared on the big screen three times already - the first time in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), the second time in her own film Wonder Woman (Wonder Woman, 2017) and for the third time in the Justice League (Justice League, 2017). Without a doubt, Gal Gadot did a great job as a superhero and won the hearts of millions, so we can only wait for the second part of Wonder Woman, which will be released in 2019.

Comic book fans probably know a lot more about this character than ordinary fans of going to the cinema, because the world first met Wonder Woman back in 1941 on the pages of old picture magazines. For almost 80 years she has been fighting evil, and during this time the heroine has inspired many women to believe in themselves and proved that women also have strength and courage. Most of Diana's adventures will remain in the comics, which does not stop the producers from looking for alternative scenarios that could make the plot relevant to today's youth and at the same time not lose touch with the origins of the past. In the meantime, until new stories are written, it's time to learn something interesting and even strange, which has long made Wonder Woman such a unique and attractive heroine.

Creation

During World War II, William Moulton Marston realized that early comic book characters were predominantly male and developed Wonder Woman as a response to such well-known heroes as Superman (Superman), Batman (Batman) and Captain America (Captain America). America). Marston felt there was room for a strong female character acting as equal parts hero and role model (especially for female fans).

Wonder Woman's first appearance was in All-Star Comics #8 and later in Sensation Comics #1. Six months later, Wonder Woman received her own self-titled series. Wonder Woman #1 was written by Marston himself with comic book cover art by Harry G. Peter. In a 1943 issue of The American Scholar, Marston wrote:

“Even girls don't want to be girls as long as our feminine archetype lacks strength and power. Not wanting to be girls, they do not want to be gentle, submissive, peaceful, as good women should be. Women's strengths began to be despised because of their weakness. The obvious solution is to create a female character, with all the power of Superman plus all the charm of a good and beautiful woman."

Origin

Diana was the daughter of Queen Hippolyta, the first child born on Paradise Island in the three millennia that the immortal Amazons lived there. The Amazons were created around 1200 BC when the Greek goddesses "pulled out" the souls of all women killed by men. But one soul remained; a soul that will be reborn as Diana. Initially, this soul belonged to the unborn daughter of the first woman killed by a man (Hippolyta was her reincarnation). At the end of the 20th century, Hippolyta was “instructed” to mold a child out of clay from the shores of Paradise Island. The six members of the Greek Pantheon connected the soul of that girl with the "form", granting that life. Each of the six gave Diana a gift: Demeter, great power; Athena (Athena) - wisdom and courage; Artemis (Artemis) - the heart of the hunter and connection with animals; Aphrodite (Aphrodite) - beauty and a loving heart; Hestia (Hestia) - kinship with fire; Hermes - speed and ability to fly. Wonder Woman didn't hide her true identity, especially since she wasn't the first "super heroine". Indeed, in many ways she resembled an innocent child in character. Diana spoke Themyscirian, a combination of classical Greek and Turkish. Diana had to learn English when she arrived in America. However, Diana had received military training and had no qualms about using lethal techniques when necessary. She often dealt with war, injustice, inequality, death, and conflicts involving the Olympian gods.

Before embarking on her mission, Diana received from Hephaestus himself the Lasso of Truth. She also received the Sandals of Mercury, which allowed her to traverse great distances in seconds. Diana's mission was peace, but part of it at the very beginning involved the destruction of Ares' insane plan to destroy the world. Diana ventured into the world of men, starting in Boston. There she met Harvard professor Dr. Julia Kapatelis and her daughter, Vanessa, as well as Air Force officers Steve Trevor and Etta Candy. Diana stayed with Julia and Vanessa and learned English within a month or two. She was attacked by Decay, one of Ares' minions, and after the battle continued on the streets of Boston, Diana made her first public appearance and was given the name Wonder Woman. After discovering Ares' plan that included a nuclear holocaust, Diana was able to thwart his plans by fighting her way through Ares' sons Phobos and Deimos, meeting their father at the end and pointing out to Ares the enormity of his ways with the Lasso of Truth. After defeating the God of War, Diana returned home, where Poseidon himself healed her wounds.

Collaboration with the Teen Titans / Joining the Justice League

Wonder Woman became a popular female hero during the creation of the Teen Titans. And also, at the same time, she became part of the Justice League of America (Justice League of America). Once Wonder Woman returned, Mindy Meyer quickly set up another publicity stunt, this time at the fair. Things got extremely bad when the first Silver Swan appeared. Wonder Woman fought Swan alone on the beach, but was unable to catch her. Back in Boston, Diana decided to stay with Vanessa while her mother was in Greece. During this time, Diana began to realize that she was thinking about Superman more and more and therefore asked Mindy to arrange a meeting for them. Their "meeting" took place while they were together saving Olympus from the clutches of Darkseid, after he devastated it. Superman and Wonder Woman decided to remain friends, but Superman trusted Diana enough to tell her the secret of his dual identity. Wonder Woman is one of the few who endearingly refers to him as "Kal".

The gods decided it was time to take a vacation (or "Space Migration" as they called it), and even Diana decided to take her friends to Greece to see the ancient home of her people. There she met Julia Kapitilis's parents, but she felt strange about one of the small islands with which a bad story was connected. As it turned out, Circe made this island her home and sent her minions to capture Diana and deliver her in chains. Circe told her the whole story, including how she killed Antiope, Hippolyta's sister. Circe also told Diana a prophecy that she learned from Hecate, who gave her her powers. She believed that if she or Diana killed each other, then Hekate would devour the survivor. Circe decided to use a spell that would "return" Diana to the clay form from which she was created. Even with the help of her friends, Wonder Woman was only able to get through the day thanks to Hermes, who had not yet left Olympus.

When Diana returned to Boston for the umpteenth time, she learned of Mindy's death - someone had shot her in the face with a shotgun in her own home. A man named Steve Lundon (Steve London) was blamed for the incident, but Diana learned that the killer was a man named Skeeter Boyd (Skeeter Boyd). Skeeter died trying to escape Wonder Woman by grabbing onto a energized fence and "roasting" himself. In fact, he did not kill Mindy - an overdose of cocaine and alcohol did it before him. It remains for Diana to find the answer to the question of how this could happen.

Summoned back to Paradise Island, Diana received a request from the gods to go to Olympus with Hippolyta and Menalippe. Olympus was still in ruins after Darkseid's attack. The gods have announced their decision to leave Earth, maybe forever, maybe not. The gods wanted Diana to destroy Olympus to the end; so they could start all over again. Their fate was now in their own hands, so Diana held a vote on whether they should really open the gates of the island and let the men come here. The Amazons voted yes, and Wonder Woman returned to Boston to have Julia and Vanessa as their first guests.

Shadows of the Past

Diana was shocked when Hermes showed up in Boston. He explained that he felt that the journey of the gods was a mistake and sought to establish himself as a god here in Boston. He got a few "believers" through bribes and ostentatious healings, despite Diana's protests. However, Hermes was tricked by Phobos and the immortal gorgon, Eurayle, into freeing Ixion the Assassin. Ixion began killing hundreds of people across Boston and damaged an old American ship called the Constitution. Hermes sent Diana a supernatural call for help, and Diana arrived just in time to fight Phobos, who was being wielded by Wonder Woman with her Lasso. After attacking Ixion and "throwing" him out of the city to prevent further death and destruction, Hermes was able to free himself and reclaim his Caduceus, the source of much of his divine power, and decapitate Euraile. Meanwhile, Ixion continued to fight Diana, but even he was unable to surpass her divine power. He told Diana about the millennia of torture and begged her to kill him to ease his suffering. Then Hermes appeared, along with Phobos, who was connected with the help of Caduceus; Hermes insisted that Ixion should be imprisoned again. However, Phobos began to talk about the fact that the only place where you can imprison Ixion is Themyscira. Diana was horrified, but before the matter was settled, a squadron of planes appeared. Seeing his chance to finally die, Ixion attacked these planes and was destroyed by them in retaliation. Diana blamed herself for what happened, as she had not taken a tough stance towards Hermes when he first arrived in Boston.

Wonder Woman, along with other heroes, confronted an alien alliance that was trying to take over the Earth in the pages of the Invasion! (Invasion!).

Justice League of Europe, however, Diana decided not to become part of the team). Minerva's servant, Mister Chuma, poisoned Diana and began telling her the whole story of how Minerva became the Cheetah. However, the poison did not work on Diana and she found the Cheetah in Egypt, where in the hidden city, Bana-Mighdall, she found the lost Amazon colony. Their leader, Queen Anahid, knocked Diana out with a poisoned dart and locked her in a cell. The high priestess attempted to kill Diana, but died when Wonder Woman threw her across the room and forced her to swallow the same poison that Anahid had poisoned Diana with. Wonder Woman freed herself and realized that the Cheetah would be on the hunt that same night - but she was still weak from the effects of the poison. Amazon mercenaries have been hired to appease a nearby village. Armed for war, Wonder Woman fought the mercenaries and was attacked by the Cheetah. After a brutal battle, Wonder Woman defeated her opponent and locked her up (Plague was killed with a gunshot during the battle). Queen Anahid, mortally wounded by the Cheetah, died after handing over command of the Amazons to Diana. The Amazons called off the raid and told Diana their story. They were indeed descendants of Antiope, sister of Hippolyta, although they were not immortal. They also kept the Golden Girdle of Gaea. They became a nation of mercenaries after the death of Antiope. Pythia, who blamed Theseus and all men for her mother's death, became their first leader. The city was attacked by Hermes, who found out about this group of Amazons and was furious. He came for the Golden Belt. Diana managed to convince him to stop his attacks. One of the Amazons, Faruka, decided to take advantage of the turmoil and try to seize power using a (cyborg?) named Shim'tar. Since Hermes was weakened by Gaea's status, Diana fought the Shim'tar alone; the situation was stalemate. The Egyptian government, outraged by the massacre in one of their villages, ordered an air strike against the hidden city. Not even Hermes could intervene. The entire city was destroyed, leaving Hermes, Diana, and Minerva alone in the desert. Wonder Woman regained her Lasso and Golden Belt. After a brief stop in Boston, Diana returned the Belt to her mother.

It's time for Themyscira to welcome the rest of the world. Twelve delegates were chosen: Asmund Lindel, Norwegian delegate from the UN; Maritza Nitmbe, North African botanist; Phyllis Haller, feminist, bestselling author and sociologist; Vladimir Morakov, Russian neurosurgeon; Robert Cantwell, Scottish history teacher and war veteran; Rabbi Benjamin Hecht and Unitarian Minister Reverend Alan Withersppon were the only two religious leaders who responded to Diana's invitation (the Vatican remained silent). Wonder Woman faced the Silver Swan a second time, but now the Swan was even more powerful as Vanessa tried to run away from her "benefactors". Diana and Etta Candy were captured by Hank Ambruster's bandits, but working together they were able to escape. By using her Lasso of Truth on Ambruster, Diana was able to reveal the depth of his lies to Valerie. The swan has ceased to be a villain.

Now that everyone knew about Themyscira, and the gods moved away from Earth, Hippolyta decided that she needed to take on a more active role. The Amazons took off their bracelets and decided to go to the World of Men and see all it had to offer.

Hippolyta, Menalippa, Phillipa and others have come to stay at the Gotham hotel. Diana met Hermes again, who rebuilt the temple of himself and continued to attack Diana - or was it not him? It actually turned out to be Mercury, and Wonder Woman helped the real Hermes defeat her "evil twin". Mercury was able to win this battle by mocking the humiliated Hermes. Back in Boston, Diana was confronted by Hermes, who announced his intention to destroy the city. It was all the fault of Doctor Psycho, who posed as Vanessa's therapist. Diana and Hermes were able to recover and team up to find the culprit of what happened. There, they found Vanessa's teacher, whose unborn child was being tortured by Psycho. Meanwhile, the Amazons have been under attack by masked assassins who have killed cops and put the blame on women. The news quickly spread, and by the time Diana got the injured teacher to the hospital, the police were trying to arrest her for the murder. Diana defended her innocence while informing the police of the location of Doctor Psycho, whom she tied with her lasso. However, upon arriving there, the police found no one. Before the Boston Police Department caught her, Diana convinced them to let her help get the baby to the hospital, which she succeeded in doing. The news reported that armed Amazons broke into the hotel and killed the policemen.

Wonder Woman allowed herself to be taken into custody, where she learned the latest terrible news: Hippolyta was missing, Phillipa was mortally wounded, Menallipa and Epione were arrested (being wounded), Mnemosyne and Timandra were also arrested, but in other cities, Pythia and Euboea (Euboea) disappeared and Hellene (Hellene) was killed. Gods war

At home, many of her Amazon sisters called for revenge, believing their queen had been killed. Diana has established herself as the rightful leader of the Amazons no matter what they decide. While they were arguing, the Oracle announced that the gods had returned. As soon as her words shook the air, Diana was summoned to Mount Olympus. The gods declared that something was terribly wrong with the order of things. They also saw Pariah and did not understand his importance. Zeus spent most of his power simply to summon Hermes from Earth, while summoning Diana required the combined efforts of the rest of the pantheon. They told her that Donna Troy also showed up unexpectedly. It was then that a new group of beings appeared, and as if this place belonged to them. It was the Roman pantheon, led by Jupiter himself. The Roman gods announced that they had a champion to take on the Greek Wonder Woman - it was none other than Captain Marvel. Diana was forced to defend herself even when Hermes and Mercury clashed in the second round. Wonder Woman defeated Marvel. Circe began to unleash her master plan, spreading chaos across the globe.

While Wonder Woman was on Mount Olympus, Hercules traveled to Paradise Island. As soon as he got there, earthquakes began to tear the island apart. Going into its depths, Hercules found Atlanta (Atlas) there, holding the island on his shoulders. It was the Roman Atlas who mistook Hercules for Hercules. Once they got to know each other, they became as confused as the rest. Meanwhile, in the United States, Timandra and Epion were being transported by a military escort, which was attacked by the Amazons, but the prisoners did not find any Amazons among the attackers. These "Amazons" left a few survivors to tell what had happened, then put the trio to sleep and took them with them. Diana, after defeating Marvel, was returned to Boston.

Diana ended up in the house of a police inspector, Edward Indelicato, with whom she was friends. She told him her story, and Edward agreed to help her. Diana, sensing that Circe was indeed the cause of all this chaos, decided to track down Doctor Fate for help; The Doctor gave her a spell that made her invisible so Diana could return to Boston. The spell vanished when Wonder Woman flew (literally) into the Silver Swan, who was dumbfounded by her luck as Valerie herself was looking for Diana to give her some guidance. Diana was able to say little as her attention was focused on the current situation.

A call from Black Canary allowed Diana to speak to Batman, whom she asked to retrieve the lost Themyscir Cup, with which she believed she could vindicate her compatriots. Wonder Woman then teamed up with Zatanna, Phantom Stranger, Spectre, Doctor Fate, Flash/Wally West, Madam Xanadu and Geo-Force ) in an attempt to undo the spell "woven" by Circe. The latter expected something like this and planned to use the energy of the spells that that group had begun to cast, but her plan backfired and her spells were incomplete: the war was still going on.

Circe was betrayed by her ally, Kaslak. In addition to moving the relics she needed for her spells, he also allowed Pythia to sneak into Circe's lair. There, she was able to free her captured sisters as well as Giulia Kapatelis. Wonder Woman met with Batman, who returned the goblet to her, but stated that it was, in fact, a fake plated in an unknown metal. The tracks led Diana to Egypt, where she discovered Bana Maitdoll, which she believed had been destroyed. There she found Lobo, who fought the Shim'tar. When several Rogue Amazons appeared, Diana forced Lobo to fight them while she confronted the Shim'tar herself, demanding information on her mother's whereabouts. After a brutal battle, Diana was able to place the Shim'tara on the ground, only to discover her birth mother underneath the mask.

Now all the pieces of the puzzle are in place. Cheetah confronted Edwards and told him the whole truth. While she was in prison, Circe's minion, Mikos, turned her into a Cheetah, and she remained in this form all the time, although Minerva's mind remained unchanged. Circe was almost hostile towards her, but insisted on her joining the bestiamorph army. Cheetah helped Kaslak steal the necessary artifacts with which Circe could cast spells. Among the artifacts was a goblet, which Circe decided to exchange for a fake one, which fully corresponded to her plans. She also used the Renegade Amazons to discredit Diana and Themyscira. Plus, Circe hired Doctor Psycho to distract Diana. When Hippolyta touched the false Cup, she turned into a new Shim'tar. Mikos "carried" Shim'tar out of the building, but was unable to take the goblet with him after Maxi Zeus's assassins showed up. They were hired by Cheetah, who was playing her game, against Circe. Phillipa was attacked by one of the Amazons and witnessed Elina's death at the hands of the Cheetah.

Diana is not dead - not completely. Her soul was collected by Phantom Wanderer, Specter and Deadman. They told her that Klarion the Witch Boy was responsible for reversing Circe's spells. Meanwhile, Superman led the charge against Mount Olympus itself, where the confused Greek and Roman gods were ready to destroy each other. When Circe's deceit became clear, she was sent back to Limbo, where she killed Hermes. There she found Donna Troy and Diana brought back to life. The latter fought the sorceress, but this time the advantage was on the side of Wonder Woman, because Hecate left Circe. The witch was apparently killed, but Hekate was denied Diana's soul. The gods again decided to leave, but the long war was finally over.

The war was costly. Much of the island was destroyed and needed to be rebuilt, and Menallipa and the other Amazons lost their lives. The UN thankfully dropped all charges against Themyscira and Queen Hippolyta was alive and well. Diana returned to the States just in time to attend Vanessa's graduation ceremony. This turning point is also marked by the departure of George Perez as lead writer for the series.

Conflict in the House and Beyond the Stars

After Pérez left the series, the rest of the writers and artists tried to follow in his footsteps, with varying degrees of success. William Mesner-Loebs, also known as Bill Loebs, took on the role of lead writer for issues 63-100.

Wonder Woman was summoned by Superman when Brainiac seized control of Warworld and headed for Earth. Superman decided that Earth couldn't wait for this invasion, so they planned to launch a preemptive strike, for which Diana brought in many of Earth's heroes. While Batman was assembling a team to defend the Earth from any enhanced warriors, Diana traveled with Superman and the other heroes to Warworld. There she fought bravely, but her role was insignificant and unobtrusive.

Diana spent some time with Vanessa and Julia until she learned from Edward Indelicato that Cheetah had been captured in the Balkans, in a country called Pan Balgravia, by the new president, Baron Von Nastraed. Diana contacted the god Proteus just before her departure, enlisting his help to create a fake identity, Diana Prince. Lacking knowledge of the region, she decided to enlist the help of Deathstroke as well. Indelicato decided to go with her. The first place they went to turned out to be a trap and they had to fight their way through several royal guards. Grabbing one, Wonder Woman, using her Lasso, learned that the Baron had secret and fictitious prisons built throughout the country, as well as mass graves. Diana and Slade secretly went to the best restaurant in the country, where they met the Baron and got his consent to the next meeting. On the way to the meeting, Deathstroke announced that they were parting ways, which led to a showdown between him and Wonder Woman, with Diana winning. Leaving Deathstroke in the trunk of the car and Indelicato guarding her, Diana broke into the Baron's castle, but he was not as naive as they expected and was waiting for her with several demonic bandits.

Deathstroke quickly recovered and at this time some of his "friends" showed up as support. Wonder Woman was thrown into a magical cage, but managed to escape. Barbara Minerva, restored to her human self, was in a cage next to Diana; she was very weak from the long torture. She explained that the demon ruler of this place needed a strong female host for his assistant. The Baron and his "assistant", Mister Drax, began their demonic ritual when Deathstroke appeared on the scene. While Wonder Woman fought Drax, Slade went after the Baron. Minerva, drinking some of the spilled blood, turned into a Cheetah and "dived" into the portal that Drax had opened, sealing it and destroying Drax himself. The Baron vanished into thin air after Deathstroke stabbed him in the chest - at least the country was free again.

Wonder Woman was ready to testify at Indelicato's hearing, but no charges were brought against him. Leaving the police station, Diana met a distraught woman who claimed that her daughter had been kidnapped by her husband. This man ended up on the wrong side of several drug dealers who were shot and killed at a meeting where the man was also present. Despite betrayal from within, Diana was able to take on the ruler of the Sentry Empire and force him (or her?) to acknowledge the stupidity of the ways of the people of the Empire. With some help from Julia, Wonder Woman finally made it home. In her absence, Randolph became the Hero of Boston.

Diana was intrigued, if not especially impressed, by the rough and haughty manner of communication of this Antiope Amazon. While they were talking, word came from Hippolyta - there would be a new contest and a new Wonder Woman.
