Plastic windows 23.06.2019
                  Plastic windows

When disassembling and installing the frame, it is necessary to pull out the double-glazed window. And only then, insert it back. That is why we will now analyze the intricacies of such a process as installing a double-glazed window with our own hands.

  Basic concepts

Double-glazed window insert

So, to begin with, we will analyze exactly what is called a double-glazed window. A double-glazed window is understood to mean one, two or three chambers filled with air or inert gas, limited by glass on the sides and a remote profile along the contour.

A double-glazed window is not the window itself, therefore, when you have a question about installing double-glazed windows with your own hands, it is the double-glazed window itself in the frame, and not.

  Disassembly Features

In order to dismantle the double-glazed window from the frame with your own hands before installation, you need to use either a chisel or a screwdriver.

You gently pry the glazing bead (preferably starting from the side), slightly press the tool into the groove, and the glazing bead comes out.

Important! Sticks must be marked!

For marking at or in any room, use pieces of adhesive tape that you stick on the glazing bead and on the frame, and write a number on top of the marker or pencil and mark the place of insertion with the corresponding number. Why is it advisable to use pieces of tape? Yes, all because if you write directly on the frame, then later, of course, you will wash the number off with alcohol, but in some cases there may be a barely noticeable trace that will ruin the whole "picture".

Having dismantled all glazing beads, tilt the frame slightly and catch the double-glazed window itself. It is necessary to handle the double-glazed window carefully, because if you drop it, do not hit it specially, the structure may not be sealed, and then this will not be the best solution for you.

  Installation in place

So, now we will analyze the intricacies of installing a double-glazed window with your own hands.

Bead insert

Take a double-glazed window, and with the help of home, insert it into the already installed frame. Turn it on tight so that it snaps into place.

And then - install, according to the marking, the glazing beads themselves. And or any other room is almost complete.

If the glazing beads were not numbered by you, then it is likely that when you insert them, you will have 1-2 mm gaps. These gaps will need to be carefully silicified so that moisture does not get inside, which may become a source of the formation of some defects in the future.

So, this is how simple it is to complete the installation of a double-glazed window with your own hands.

The invention of double-glazed windows became a new stage in the development of window systems and one of the most optimal ways to make housing more comfortable. High-quality plastic windows not only retain heat well inside the house, but also extend its operational life and improve the appearance of the building. In each city there are tens and hundreds of companies offering installation services for double-glazed windows, but is it so difficult to do this work yourself? In this article, we will describe in detail how the installation of plastic double-glazed windows occurs.

Preparatory work

Any owner wants to save on construction or repair, but not in all cases should give in to this desire. If you have at least minimal construction experience, own the simplest tools such as a punch and a water level, want to get a new useful experience, then you have every chance to do the installation of double-glazed windows with your own hands. By and large, installation will not require specific equipment or much effort. First of all, you need to familiarize yourself with the standards set forth in GOST 23166-99 and GOST 30971-02, as well as take into account some of the nuances that will allow you to get a high-quality result. In this article we will talk about the technology for installing Euro-windows according to GOSTs and share a couple of secrets that are not mentioned in official documents.

Main advantage plastic windows, which manufacturers do not mention, is the simplicity of their installation. In fact, the factory equipment for double-glazed windows takes into account all the necessary fasteners and fittings, so the craftsmen can only fix the windows in a new place. But since first you have to dismantle the old windows, prepare the window openings, and only then fix the new windows, the process seems time-consuming and complicated.

An important point: It’s worth mentioning right away that in the case of self-installation of Euro-windows you will encounter one problem - no manufacturer can give a guarantee for their products if you do not order their installation. That is, the performance and durability of double-glazed windows depends on the proper implementation of all stages of installation, and this can only be guaranteed by official representatives of the manufacturer or a specialized company that gives a separate guarantee for its services. That is why, deciding to independently install windows of double-glazed windows, you consciously accept the risk and take full responsibility for the whole process.

Measurements and calculations

So, if the cost of installing a double-glazed window does not suit you and you decide to take matters into your own hands, you must first take measurements. Below we describe how to do this for openings without an external quarter. This means that a number of masonry goes inside the opening from the outside of the wall.

How to measure a window:

  1. Measure the space between the slopes on the inside - this will be the width of the window.
  2. Measure the space between the windowsill and the upper end of the opening - the height of the window. Add to it the thickness of the future window sill.
  3. To find the width of the window, subtract twice the size of the mounting gap from the width of the opening. To find the height, subtract the doubled installation clearance and the size of the stand profile from the height of the opening.
  4. Measure in the center of the window opening and on both sides to prevent distortions. In practice, perfectly flat openings practically do not come across, so do not be alarmed if there are inconsistencies in the calculations, but simply select the smallest of the results.
  5. Arm yourself with a plumb bob with high-quality axial alignment and a sharp tip to check the vertical evenness of the window opening. Then use a building level to check for horizontal distortions. In case of deviations, record the readings on paper in the form of a drawing. To do this, first draw a perfect rectangle (which should be the window opening), and then indicate which direction the horizontal or vertical offset is.
  6. Measure all openings separately. At the same time, their width can be very different, but the height of all should be one (choose the smallest of all values).
  7. Now you need to calculate the location of the window block. The double-glazed window should be installed on 2/3 of the width of the wall from its inner side. If in the future you plan to insulate the wall from the outside, the window needs to be put a little further - this is the place for the mounting plane, that is, the outer plane of the glass packet.
  8. Measure the external tides. Usually, you just need to find out the length of the current tide or add about 5 cm to the bends to the width of the opening. To find out how wide the tide should be, add 3-4 cm to the ledge and 5 cm to the bends to the distance from the mounting plane to the outer edge of the wall. But here you should also take into account the future exterior cladding of the house - if you will do external insulation or, for example, close the walls with clapboard, consider the thickness of the materials used.
  9. Calculate the dimensions of the future window sill - in width it should correspond to the distance from the inner side of the wall to the mounting plane. Add the departure size to this figure and subtract the width of the future window frame (it can be found when ordering a double-glazed window). When calculating the departure, it should be borne in mind that the window sill should close the battery below only 1/3, but not completely. Otherwise, the cold air from the window will not be able to go down and heat up from the radiator, and the warm currents will not be able to rise up, and the microclimate in the room will be disturbed. Such a seemingly insignificant detail can provoke the appearance of dampness, cold and general discomfort in the room. If the battery is located in a deep niche in the wall, it is better to make ventilation holes in the windowsill, backing 5-10 cm from the window.
  10. It is better to measure slopes after installing double-glazed windows, since up to this point it is very difficult to correctly calculate their width. The length of the slopes should correspond to the height of the window opening plus a small cutting margin.
  11. In many brick houses   window openings have an external quarter, which must be taken into account when calculating. In this case, all distances must be measured on the outside of the opening. To find the width of the window, add 2.5-4 cm to the width between the quarters, and to find the height, add 2.5-4 cm to the distance from the tide to the upper quarter.

Important: Consider the thickness of the concrete screed under the windowsill and low tide. So you can order double-glazed windows with a sufficient area and correctly calculate window sills with ebbs after installation.

If you intend to glaze the balcony, calculations should be done a little differently. So, to find the width, find out the length of the parapet and take 6-7 cm on both sides to mount the corner profile. To find out the height of the window, measure the length from the parapet to the top of the balcony and subtract 2.5-3 cm from the obtained value (for mounting gaps). Measurements of windows on the sides occur according to the same scenario, only for width it is necessary to subtract 6-7 cm on the corner profile from one side, and 2.5-3 cm from the other side for the installation space between the window and the wall.

If you are planning to install double-glazed windows in wooden house   or an old brick building, before measurements it will be more convenient to repulse the slopes a little from all sides. This is due to the fact that often the window opening dimensions significantly exceed the dimensions of the window located in it, and in the intermediate space there is concrete, slag, insulation and other debris, which can be dispensed with and at the same time let in more light into the house.

Window design selection

The price of installing double-glazed windows consists of two parts: measurements and the installation itself. If you managed to do away with the first, then you have already saved half the amount. After all the calculations, you can start choosing plastic windows. Choose a manufacturer with a great experience in the market, a good reputation and reasonable prices, then provide a drawing with measurements, so that the specialist will adjust them and select the appropriate products. At this stage, you determine the configuration of the future window - how many shutters will be in it, how they will open, what the fastening system of the double-glazed window will be.

There are two schemes for fastening eurowindows: through the frame in the mounting plane and with support fittings, which are already attached to the window frame during production. The first method of fastening is more popular, since installation is faster, and the windows themselves weigh less, however, you must first remove the double-glazed windows from the blind. Mounting with fittings will be more convenient for DIY installation, since in this case you do not risk spoiling the double-glazed windows and violating the tightness of the window structure.

Installation of double-glazed windows

When the ordered windows have been delivered to you, you can begin to prepare the place. Up to this point, it makes no sense to do anything - if you dismantle old windows, then the wind will blow into the empty window opening, moisture and debris from the street will penetrate. The only thing that can be done while waiting for delivery is to move all the furniture to the wall opposite the window, or even remove it from the room, to clean the place in front of the window as much as possible. It is better to lay dense building polyethylene on the floor and on the batteries so that dust and debris when dismantling old windows do not complicate your cleaning.

Profile Preparation

The installation should begin with the preparation of the profile. Remove the double-glazed windows and the opening flaps from the window frame (installation method through the frame). To do this gently, take a chisel and pry off the glazing bead holding the double-glazed window - a couple of light strokes, and it will snap out of the groove.

Useful advice: When taking out each glazing bead, be sure to label it so as not to confuse it later! Even in modern production, they may vary slightly in size. If you still forgot to mark the glazing beads, and one of them is hardly placed in the groove or does not enter there at all, do not hammer it there, but try another element. Otherwise, microscopic gaps may remain in the grooves through which the window is depressurized.

When you removed the glazing beads, slightly tilt the frame so that the double-glazed window itself slightly moves away from it, and it can be picked up and removed. Set the windows aside and remove the plugs from the wings, then unscrew the bolts located under them. If the structure has a fanlight system, open the upper part so that the hook can be pulled out of the lower canopy.

After all these actions, you will only have a frame with jumpers. From its inside, around the perimeter, drill holes for anchors in the amount of 3-5 pcs. on the sides and 2-4 pcs. up and down. Use a drill bit for metal if you are working with a plastic product (there is a reinforcing metal insert inside) or for wood if you are installing a wooden structure. The diameter of the drill must correspond to mounting anchors of 8-10 mm. If special “ears” are used for fastening, you can not disassemble the window, but simply screw these fasteners with screws to the frame.

Useful advice: You will not find this stage of work in any state standard specification - the support profile needs to be filled with polyurethane foam. Even professional double-glazed window installers do not always do this job, and yet this technique helps eliminate the risk of cold bridges appearing in the bottom of the window between the stand profile and the frame. Fill this void with foam a day before installing the window so that it can solidify properly. So you will significantly increase the thermal insulation characteristics of the glass.

Removing old windows

It is rational to dismantle old windows only on the day of installing double-glazed windows, so get ready to spend several hours working - you need to do everything quickly and clearly. Naturally, the weather on the street should be dry and as warm as possible. Dismantling can be done in two ways: rough or delicate. If the old window frame is not useful to you in the future, you can simply break it and literally uproot it from the opening. The shutters in this case are removed from the canopies or torn out together with the fixing screws, after which they file the frame at several points and remove it in pieces with a nail clipper (crowbar). If you want to put the old frame in the country or on the balcony, you will have to act more accurately and much longer.

In any case, under the box you will see a sealant and insulation material - they also need to be removed. At the same time, with the help of a puncher with a spatula nozzle, it is necessary to completely or partially remove the slopes (depending on how you will form them). It remains only to remove the window sill and hit the punch with a concrete substrate under it. This work is very dusty and noisy, so it is better to warn neighbors in advance about possible discomfort. Try to immediately put the garbage in the building plastic bags, then quickly take them out of the house and go to the "clean" stage of work.

When the window opening is freed from the old structure, it must be cleaned of dirt and dust, and then covered with a deep penetration primer. Many installers also forget about this part of the work, and the primer protects the wall material from getting wet, seals it and contributes to better fixation with a new window frame.

If you are working in a wooden house, then use a wood primer, and after drying, lay an additional layer of waterproofing material around the entire perimeter of the opening. If this is not done, the assembly foam will pick up moisture from the wood and eventually lose its insulating properties. If the house is old, it is better to strengthen the wooden opening by inserting a window box from a solid wood array into it.

Useful advice: For houses of architectural value, resizing window openings is unacceptable, and therefore it will not be possible to insert a box of wood. In this case, the opening dimension can be restored by replacing the screed layer on the sides and in the lower part.

How to put double-glazed windows

Only after careful preparation can you finally proceed to the installation of plastic windows. This work, in comparison with the previous stages, takes very little time.

Installation technology of double-glazed windows:

  1. On the bottom of the window opening, lay the substrate of wooden blocks or plastic (can be ordered complete with euro-windows). The substrates should be selected so that their upper faces are strictly horizontally in the same plane, otherwise the window will appear crooked (use the building level).
  2. Place the frame on the substrate. By the way, the whetstones will remain under the window and in the future they will secure the anchor anchors, since they can loosen over time and fail to cope with the weight of the structure.
  3. Drive the pegs closer to the top on the sides (if you drive in the center, the frame may bend) - they will hold the structure vertically.
  4. Check the horizontality of the glass with a building level.
  5. If skews are found, adjust the position of the substrates by adding and aligning the window horizontally. In the same way, align it vertically using a plumb line. Only after you make sure that the window is absolutely even can you attach it with anchors.
  6. Drill holes in the window opening with a drill with a drill nozzle, go through pre-drilled places in the frame. Experts recommend first fixing the bottom of the frame on both sides, and only then take on the remaining points. Do not fully tighten the anchor to be able to quickly adjust the position. First install all the fasteners, check the horizontal and vertical evenness of the window again, and only then tighten the anchor to the end, but not too tight, otherwise the frame may not withstand pressure and is deformed.
  7. If you have chosen a window structure with a method of attaching to the reinforcing cage, special “ears” should be included with it - small metal plates sticking out on one or both sides of the window, with holes for anchors. Place the “ears” so that they fit as close as possible to the wall, and then drill holes with a perforator. Otherwise, everything is the same - first fasten the lower parts of the sidewalls, then everything else. Do not forget to check evenness with a level and plumb before each next step!

At the outer edge of the window there is a recess in which to drain the drain. After installing it, fill all voids with mounting foam for better fixation. In some trim levels, for attaching the ebb, there are additional screws (screw to the frame).

Window assembly

When reassembling the structure, bead marking is very useful for you. Insert the double-glazed windows into the frame, first driving the upper, then the lower and side glazing beads. To snap them into place, use a rubber mallet and do not knock too hard. After complete assembly, check the operation of all swing wings - at 45 ° and 90 °, the leaf should not go on its own, and in the closed position there should be no gaps.

If all is well, you can seal the voids between the window frame and the opening. Use polyurethane foam for this - it is very dense, holds heat well and lasts a long time. To prevent windows from fogging in the future, on the inside, along the entire perimeter, except at the bottom, attach a special vapor barrier tape for double-glazed windows with one edge. On the outside of the window, glue a moisture-proof membrane. Glue a moisture-resistant self-adhesive strip with a foil side on the lower inner edge of the window (the foil should “look” into the room to reflect heat). After installing the window sill, the protective strip will not be visible. These products can be ordered immediately with windows, and it is better not to save on them if you want to get a high-quality result and enjoy it for many years. Bend all the strips inward and close the openings.

An important point: Polyurethane foam can serve as an excellent heat insulator only if it is protected from the sun and other atmospheric influences, so after installing the window, be sure to do exterior decoration with preliminary installation of at least the simplest waterproofing material. Correctly formed slopes also significantly extend the life of the foam.

It remains only to install the windowsill. Cut it so that it neatly fits under the frame and rests in profile. The edges of the window sill should stick out by 5-10 cm. Adjust the level with pegs - there should be a slight slope in the room to set the direction of cold air when ventilating. The void under the windowsill must be filled with mounting foam or cement-sand mortar, after having screwed the screws on the inside of the frame in the center and at the edges.

Now you can tidy up the room and leave the windows alone for a day so that the foam grasps properly. After the specified time, you can fully use the windows. Glazing of a balcony with eurowindows is carried out according to the same principle, the only thing that may be necessary in some cases is the reinforcement of the parapet. So, if you find out how much it costs to install double-glazed windows, and you didn’t like this figure, you know how to do this work yourself.

Double-glazed windows today want to install many. They look good, have excellent heat and sound insulation properties.

Most often, the installation of double-glazed windows is done by specialists, but some people want to install them on their own in order to save, knowing how much it costs to install a double-glazed window.

Self-installation of double-glazed windows, of course, is not recommended if there are no skills in construction, but knowing how to install a double-glazed window does not hurt. There are times when double-glazed windows were installed without observing the rules.

Therefore, knowing the installation rules, it is possible to control the actions of workers and make sure that the work was carried out efficiently - but the price of installing double-glazed windows is 30-50% of their cost!

If there is no experience, it does not matter how much it costs to install a window - it is better to entrust the work to specialists.

Sizing and dismantling an old window

After contacting the company for the installation of double-glazed windows, a specialist arrives who takes measurements of the outer and inner sides of the window box.

It should be borne in mind that after dismantling the old window, the size of the opening may change due to the plastering. If you plan to glaze the balcony, dimensioning is also necessary.

After the double-glazed window is made and delivered, the old window is dismantled.

There are two options: either remove the window carefully so that it can be used later, or to maximize the integrity of the opening. The old window sill and tide are also removed.

Frame installation

Usually the design is not installed in its entirety. First, the double-glazed window is removed from the frame, and only after the frame is installed in the window opening, the double-glazed window is inserted into it.

Before installing a double-glazed window, the window opening is leveled with plaster mixtures, get rid of bumps and cracks, and then clean dust and dirt. After that, you can install the frame. In this case, rigid linings and struts are necessarily used.

Rigidity is extremely necessary, since the finished window reaches a weight of 100-150 kg. To align the frame along the vertical axis, measuring tools are used, such as, for example, the building level.

In addition to verticality, check the parallelism of the plane of the frame in accordance with the plane of the wall. It is desirable that the installation of double-glazed windows was carried out using hydro- and vapor barrier materials - this indicates the quality of the installation of double-glazed windows.

The window frame is mounted horizontally and vertically with anchor bolts at a distance of 0.5 m from each other. After that, a double-glazed window is installed in the frame.

Joint Sealing

Installation rules provide for sealing joints. Specifications polyurethane foam   must match the temperature outside.

After the foam dries with the purpose of moisture insulation, it is treated with a water-repellent material - sealant or special paint. The thickness of the foam between the frame and the wall should not exceed 4 cm.

Installation of double-glazed windows on the balcony and loggia

The glazed balcony looks beautiful, moreover, it is much more comfortable on it in the cold season. The glazed balcony is perfectly protected from wind and rain. In addition, the loggia is better kept warm. A glazed balcony can be an additional useful room in the house. For this, the balcony needs not only glazing, but also insulation.

In this case, the balcony can be used for safe storage of things even in winter. On the loggia it will also be possible to leave indoor plants that need winter time low temperature   air. But this is only if the warming of the loggia is done correctly.

The installation of windows on the balcony has some differences, although the general principle of operation remains the same. The cost of glazing depends on many factors: the number of leaves, type of loggia glazing, etc. Special safety requirements are put forward for glazing a loggia and balcony. On average, the price of glazing a loggia and a balcony is 40,000 rubles.

For the glazing of the loggia, not only ordinary double-glazed windows, but also sliding ones can be used. Installing them yourself is difficult. And it’s better to let ordinary windows be installed on the loggia by specialists.

Final stage

After the installation is completed, you can install the accessories. The fittings have a significant impact on the cost of the window. The cost of accessories can be considerable, but it is better to install high-quality devices. Then the double-glazed window will open well and close for many years. They also set the ebb and the windowsill - how much it costs is already included in the price of the window.

Many factors influence how much a window costs. First of all, the high cost is a good double-glazed window, high-quality fittings, reliable frame. Therefore, you do not need to focus on low cost.

Now that the glass is installed, you need to remove the protective film. A day after installation, the foam will dry, and you can use the window.

  1. How to make measurements of windows?
  2. How to make the right choice?
  3. Preparing for installation.
  4. Installation of a double-glazed window.

To make the house more comfortable, warm and stylish, of course, you should pay attention to such a significant detail as double-glazed windows. But not everyone can afford such a pleasure. To deceive themselves, many prefer to make a choice in the direction of a cheap product, which is a huge mistake. Alternatively, in order to save money, you can carry out the installation yourself.

Before starting work, you should determine the plan for the installation of double-glazed windows:

  • making measurements;
  • workspace preparation;
  • independent installation.

We take measurements according to the rules

All measurements should be done carefully and scrupulously, they will be presented to the manufacturer for the manufacture of the package. Measurements are made without taking into account the outer quarter of the opening, namely, a number of bricks of the outer side of the wall, protruding inside the opening.

To determine the width, the distance is measured from one extreme point of internal slope to the opposite. The wall measures only the outside. The height of the opening is composed of the length of the distance from the window sill to the upper slope plus the thickness of the window sill itself.

With unequal results, adhere to the lowest value. Data correction occurs when a curve opening is detected by a plumb line or hydraulic level. It turned out that you have a problem with distortions, you should make a schematic drawing of the window frame, and all the curves of bends.

To get full results, simple calculations should be made. To obtain data on the final width, it is necessary to subtract the two widths of the mounting gap from the previously obtained measurement number. As for the height, it is calculated as follows: from the height of the opening two heights of the mounting gap and one height of the stand profile are subtracted.

Make the right choice

All measurements taken, it is time to place an order with the manufacturer. But before that you should present in detail both the window construction itself and the features of its execution: swing, with transom, window leaf, integral, divided, how they will be fixed.

  • On supporting reinforcement. To do this, you need to know the type of suitable window construction.
  • Through the frame. It should be borne in mind that during installation the double-glazed window is dismantled, and the shutters are made blind or hinged.

If you do the work yourself, then the first option should be preferred. Thus, you reduce the risk of damage to the glass unit during operation. The main drawback is the weight, because of which one person can’t cope with the window and he just needs a helper.

Preparation for installation

Before starting installation work, you must prepare your workplaceby cleansing it of excess. Furniture and decor should be covered with foil. Then you need to prepare the window unit, which by itself will depend on the mount. Dismantling of the double-glazed window is carried out with a chisel. To do this, they fasten the fixing glazing bead and lightly hit it. After that, you will hear the groove snap open. First, remove the glazing beads vertically, and then lower, last upper. Remember that all glazing beads are marked for convenience and proper assembly.

The glass packet is very carefully removed from the frame, because it is extremely fragile. To avoid problems, it is necessary to lean the glass unit at an angle of 30-20 degrees to the vertical to the wall surface.

Remove the clamping bolts, decorative caps from the canopy of the swing wings. For the fanlight system, open the swing in ventilation mode, turn the handle towards the center, and remove the hook of the lower canopy.

The window profile is considered fully prepared when there is a bare frame with imposts (reinforced jumpers). Then, a drill for metal on the inner surface makes holes for anchors: 2 holes with a diameter of 8-10 mm at the top and bottom, while on the side - 3.

Dismantling the profile is not done with the initial attachment to special ears. Thus, it can simply be fastened with fasteners.

Before assembling a new one, the old frame structure is dismantled: the old frame is removed, and then the spent heat-seal materials are removed from the opening. Then you need to remove the window sill, beat off the cement substrate with a puncher. After these actions, it is worth removing the accumulated sludge, primed the cleaned opening.

We install a double-glazed window

To begin the installation, it is necessary to install false elements made of plastic or wood on the lower surface of the opening. After - window profile. The side of the frame is fixed with pegs that are evenly driven into the gap between the frame and the opening. The vertical and horizontal are checked by the hydraulic level. The position of the window can be adjusted. And ... You can safely mount.

Screw into the lower part of the anchor frame, and then into the holes on the top and sides. The anchors themselves are not screwed tightly into the structure, but only perform the function of a retainer. After fixing, the horizontal and vertical of the window as a whole are checked again with a hydraulic level, the anchor is screwed to the end (without fanaticism, so as not to damage the frame). Having installed a double-glazed window, it is necessary to assemble it in the sequence in which it was at the beginning, seal the gaps, and install the window sill.

Having made the installation yourself, you can safely relax and enjoy the fruits of painstaking work!
