XBOX One S is a new 8th generation gaming platform from Microsoft that replaces the first version. The game console went on sale on August 6, 2016.

The appearance of the XBOX One S was expected, the revision and improvement of existing models is carried out by almost all manufacturers of game consoles. The S prefix in the new model implies Slim, logically leading to the fact that the prefix has become thinner and, as a result, lighter. And this is indeed so, the game console received reduced dimensions: 295 × 65 × 230 mm for the XBOX One S versus 343x81x264 mm for the XBOX One, and the weight of the new model has decreased from 3.62 kg to 2.1 kg.

Also, the XBOX One S received other differences from the previous model.

  • The XBOX One S case has suffered and external changes... Soiled glossy inserts have disappeared, the body has become completely matte, and its color is mostly white.

  • XBOX One S received a third USB port

  • Microsoft XBOX One S received a built-in power supply instead of an external one, rather large and recognized by users as inconvenient, noisy and very hot

  • Significantly reduced power consumption when running the console

  • XBOX One S's maximum hard drive size has been increased to 2TB storage

  • Console now supports 4K Ultra HD video playback (up to 1080p in previous model)

  • New HDMI port with HDR support (HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology reproduces light and dark scenes with much more colors)

  • The new model has the ability to play discs in Ultra HD Blue-Ray
  • The XBOX One case is lined in matte plastic and has no soiled glossy elements
  • Microsoft Xbox One S is capable of turning on other devices such as a TV, receiver, and cable or satellite box. When playing games and watching movies, the built-in IR transmitter will allow you to do everything faster and forget about the remote controls. All this is implemented by Microsoft Cortana technology, the connection port of which has taken the place of the port for connecting Kinect 2.0
  • In Microsoft XBOX One S, with the advent of the Microsoft Cortana port, the connector for Microsoft Kinect 2.0 has disappeared. Now, in order to connect the Kinect, you will need the Microsoft Kinect Adapter - an adapter with which you can connect the Kinect to a regular USB port
  • Microsoft XBOX One S finally got the ability to be installed in a vertical position, however, with the help of a special stand, which can be purchased in addition to the set-top box
  • The Microsoft XBOX One S gamepad received Bluetooth technology, which not only doubled the range of its reach, but also allows it to be connected to computers and mobile devices based on Windows 10 and older. This gives the controller a distinct advantage over the competition *
The gamepad has a sleeker and more streamlined design and a textured surface for added comfort while playing. Also, Microsoft XBOX One Wireless Controller has finally found a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

We can definitely say that when the new XBOX One - XBOX One S appeared on the market, the relevance of the previous version disappeared. The advantages of the novelty are on the face, and the updated complete gamepad has become more attractive and functional, thanks to expanded compatibility with other devices and the convenience of connecting via Bluetooth.

Our qualified specialists will gladly advise you on the purchase of the XBOX One S game console.

If you use PCs for gaming and entertainment, then there is only one reason to buy the Microsoft Xbox One S: you have already purchased or are planning to buy a 4K HDR TV and you need a relatively affordable yet feature-rich media box to unleash its potential.

As a gaming console, the Xbox One S only partially occupies another niche in Microsoft's product line. At $ 299 for the 500GB version, it costs $ 50 more than the existing Xbox One with the same capabilities but at 1080p. Microsoft assures us that the One S will scale 4K gaming, but this thinner Xbox One will almost certainly be forgotten when Microsoft's more powerful 4K-capable Scorpio hits the market during the 2017 winter break.

Xbox three generations: Xbox 360 (left), Xbox One C (center), and Xbox One (right)

But unlike Sony with its PlayStation 4, in the case of Microsoft it has always seemed like the company is planning the Xbox One as a gateway to its living room software and services. It doesn't matter if you position this system as a universal media box or as the best platform for exclusive console games. In any case, the company has closely integrated this device into the Windows ecosystem. In the Windows 8 era, Microsoft introduced an app that lets you control your console from your computer. With the introduction of Windows 10, it has come with enticing features such as streaming video from Xbox One to PC, and a host of other features just getting ready to launch.

Microsoft has released the August update for the Xbox One - and some might call it the equivalent of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update - and the Xbox One S will be the first model to showcase new media support. Yes, this thin xbox console One looks attractive, but the fact that its size is reduced by 40% is not its main advantage. Compactness is, of course, important, but not as important as the ability to transfer 4K content to a TV screen.

4K: a reason to buy an Xbox One S

After 3D TVs stopped receiving so much attention, manufacturers began to offer consumers the next visible advantage: 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD). And to make them even more attractive, they have taken the latest TVs to the next level of quality and demonstrated a wide dynamic range (HDR).

And if the benefits of HDR are difficult to assess until another TV appears in front of you, but already without HDR, then the benefits of using 4K are visible to the naked eye. The extra resolution brings a sense of reality that 1080p still lacks. In addition, more and more 4K content appears, which is another reason for purchasing. Now it's not just about Netflix content and YouTube videos - you can buy movies on 4K Blu-ray discs.

Thus, support for 4K Blue-ray discs, as well as streaming video in 4K and HDR formats allows you to reduce the cost of the multimedia system - just like in the case of the Sony PlayStation 3 in 2006 (By the way, Sony announced its plans to a PlayStation 4 console with 4K and HDR support, but has not yet announced a price or release date.) However, the fact remains, and 4K content looks great on screen, whether it's streaming from Amazon or Netflix, recordings from YouTube or playing from 4K discs HDR Blu-ray.

The scene from the 4K version of the Star Trek movie looks great thanks to the quality of the media, as well as the Xbox One S

However, the level of the wow factor depends on what you watch. Microsoft offers a 4K Blu-ray for the 2009 Star Trek movie, but the brown-orange palette of the movie doesn't show that much of a difference in our opinion. In addition, the drawing has become clearer and more detailed. Netflix and YouTube offer far more impressive videos, especially the vibrant wildlife tapes that TV manufacturers use to showcase their new products.

By the way, the S will support HDR gaming. But the first examples of this family, such as Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and Scalebound, will appear only in a few months.

Microsoft's Mike Ibarra also said the One S will enhance video in games up to 4K resolution. But if so, we saw no obvious signs of this capability in the One S. Even on the 4K HDR display that was used to test the console in the PC World lab, there was no difference. Keep in mind that upscaling only does pixel interpolation, which is very different from in-game video processing and texture display specifically designed for 4K resolution.

Suitable for living room

Unlike the original Xbox One, the One S really looks like a media box that will fit perfectly into your living room decor. Its width (or height if the console is mounted vertically) is 29.5 cm, its depth is 22.8 cm, and its thickness is 5.1 cm, while the original Xbox One is 33 cm wide and 28 cm deep.

In addition to the fact that a new version the console has 40% less volume (as we already reported earlier), it has another bonus: a massive power supply is already built into the case. This very nice addition makes the One S's 2.98kg weight about 0.7kg less than the original Xbox One, which is even more impressive.

The Xbox One S model has a third USB located on the front panel

Cooling becomes a priority. The ribbed front panel appears to be devoid of ventilation holes. But even if you put the console horizontally, there will be enough small holes with a diameter of spaghetti on top and sides, complementing the large cutouts in the case. While it is assumed there is a second grille inside that protects the components, I wonder how much cat hair and other debris will accumulate inside the One S while using the console. However, when clean, the One S stays cool to the touch, even without much fan noise, when it is operated in an air-conditioned apartment or well-ventilated office.

Microsoft has adapted the One S to work both vertically and horizontally. The low-profile stand, which comes free with the 2TB version, fits snugly over one side of the console by simply sliding two plastic tabs into small slots. With the stand attached, Xbox One can be positioned vertically. It won't fall, even if you push it a little, but it is unlikely to withstand the accidental paw of a disgruntled cat.

As far as the base fit in the Xbox One S is concerned, once you secure it, you get an almost perpetual console locking system. In particular, one of our editors was deeply disappointed when he realized that his entertainment center was created for the generation of horizontal DVD and video players, not for the aesthetic vases and cable modems. Microsoft explains that the stand is removable, but detaching it is not for the faint of heart. It attaches very securely, so it is better to think in advance where and how to place the console. The stand also covers the entire side of the console, but the cooling system must take that into account. We played Forza Motorsport 6 and Grand Theft Auto 5 for over an hour, and even with the stand, the console remained cool to the touch. By the way, we never heard how her fan works.

Back of Xbox One S

On the back of the One S, there are two HDMI ports, one for output and the other for TV input, as well as a pair of USB 3.0 ports, SPDIF, LAN interface and infrared. The front panel houses a third, unmarked USB port for USB drives, a button to sync with the controller, an IR receiver, a power button, and a button to eject game discs. The One S does not have a dedicated port for Kinect. And those who already have a Kinect, when replacing the original Xbox, can order a free USB adapter to connect it. (Microsoft didn't provide us with an adapter for review, so we can't tell how well it works.)

Xbox One controller (left) and new Xbox One S controller (right)

Apart from the color scheme changes from black to white with black accents, only very subtle changes differentiate the standard Xbox One controller from the Xbox One S controller. This refers to the textured back panel, which fits better in the hands, even if they are wet, and A 3.5mm audio jack on the front, which allows you to easily connect a headset or headphones. The new One S controller supports Bluetooth and can also work with PC and Windows 10 without the need for an extra adapter or cable.

Fine texture on white One S controller helps keep it from slipping in wet palms

Otherwise, both controllers are almost identical, walking the model for the One S and looks a little more flattened on the sides, possibly making this even smaller the size of the One S. The side buttons, which are less embossed and noticeably thinner than the original Xbox, are no longer provide the same amount of space for game movement.

The interface is faster ... seems to be faster

Gamers tend to pay special attention to the frame rates, rendering quality, and graphics power that are available on their console. One of the drawbacks of the original Xbox One, however, is another setting - long load times. Currently, our model takes a whopping 1 minute and 20 seconds to just load the main user interface and 1 minute 47 seconds until all standard notifications disappear (for example, "external drive ready"). Well, the One S did it in just 45 seconds.

However, if you compare the results obtained with that provided by the standard Surface Pro 4 based on Windows 10 Anniversary Update, then 45 seconds will also seem like an eternity. On SP4, it takes between 20 seconds for a cold start and 3 seconds for waking up from sleep. Obviously, there are many opportunities for improvement here. But the fact that you cannot (officially) replace the internal hard drive with a solid state drive indicates that its performance is still weak. place. And even if you do, the move to an SSD will significantly increase the price of the console while also decreasing storage, unless you have enough money to buy a 2TB SSD.

Another problem is that the user interface itself seems to take a while to warm up. The first time you try to open the left side panel of the interface, the system seems to freeze for a second or two. Moving between menu sections using the side buttons is satisfying, although each time it seems like the One S didn't recognize the button press.

And when you move through each individual panel, other minor annoying factors arise. They stem from the legacy user interface design: when the Xbox One first appeared, the console was positioned as a living room entertainment device. For example, you can view highlights from NBA games in the OneGuide app listing window. And it gets in the way that the switching is too slow, because it is designed for voice commands - both from the headset and through the Kinect sector, for which they were originally designed.

In some countries, Xbox One S may be your interactive TV guide. When you watch certain TV shows, you can see what people are saying about them on Twitter. After all, is it really bad to know what people who are watching the final episode of Game of Thrones or some other hit think at the same time?

Benefits in working with Windows 10

With the advent of Windows 10 and Microsoft's cloud services, discussing the Xbox One S as a separate console, such as the Nintendo Wii U, becomes a clear simplification. As part of the Windows 10 ecosystem, the Xbox One S device (like the original Xbox One) can use apps like the Microsoft Edge browser. It is capable of launching external applications, in particular Netflix.

Plus, Windows 10 has built-in features for Xbox integration. The Anniversary Update brings improvements such as higher frame rates (up to 60fps) when recording games on Windows 10 PCs, cross-platform access to Xbox Play Anywhere games, and dedicated PC game centers.

On Xbox One and One S, Cortana is officially introduced for the first time (as a way of transmitting voice commands through a headset). In many ways, Cortana simply replaces the familiar "Xbox, [do it]" commands, such as switching to the TV broadcast window while playing a game. It also reacts rather slowly in certain situations, but the Microsoft hardware platform, if properly configured, will be able to clearly recognize voice commands even in a rather noisy environment. For owners of the original Xbox One, frustrated by the lack of a clear enough Kinect response to voice commands, a software update has been released that may guarantee some improvement.

But these updates also come with certain performance issues. Specifically, our experience with in-game video streaming (which allows Windows 10 PC users to remotely control and play games on their Xbox One) has shown that it is far less effective on the One S than on the original console.

Although we completely restored all the previous settings, the Xbox One S was an order of magnitude slower and its performance level remained unsatisfactory. Once we were able to connect Windows 10 Anniversary Update to One S and play Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 2 with medium settings. There were only a few random blackouts, but the next day the computer couldn't even find the One S on the network.

Fortunately, things went better in games like the older The Witcher 3, which was likely to be streaming video with less connection load. So when streaming, a lot depends on the game itself, the quality of the network and its bandwidth, as well as many other factors. In general, from our point of view, the result was not so good.

That said, the wireless connection between the controller and the Xbox One S was excellent. And although the controller is not difficult to connect to a computer via Bluetooth (all you need to do is press the Pair button on the controller), it is possible, as in our case, you will first get a connection to the console. It is possible that this played a major role in the emergence of our problems with streaming video. since we were never able to set up the game on a PC with a controller connected to it.

Yes, the Xbox One S plays games just fine

Regardless, we haven't forgotten that Xbox is a game console. Perhaps you enjoy playing different games on console (Halo, after all, has yet to come to PC), or maybe you want to play more and faster. If so, you can rest assured that the One S delivers almost the same gaming experience as the Xbox One.

There are slight differences due to hardware improvements. In particular, the initial version of the Xbox One S comes with a large 2TB disk, which allows you to store games locally and quickly launch them. (That being said, a cheap external USB hard drive plugged into the original Xbox One provides equivalent storage with acceptable performance.) Games that take advantage of HDR capabilities are also on the way - we mean Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 - but they will hit the market perhaps in a few months.

In addition, the One S is supposed to upscale games to 4K, but we never saw any indication that this is actually happening. We connected Xbox One and One S to different HDMI ports on the same 4K display and then played the same games to see the difference. For those games that we ran, both consoles gave the same result in terms of picture quality, however, we also did not notice differences in frame rates.

(By the way, the Eurogamer report noted that the One S has a 7% higher frequency than the One - 914 MHz versus 853 MHz, which leads to a slight increase in frequency - from 2 to 5 fps in some games and under certain conditions Again, we didn't notice a difference in frame rates between the two consoles.)

“The quality of scaling will vary depending on the game or application,” Microsoft replied when we asked why our results were explained. Therefore, the effect of this feature will depend on how good and large-scale its support will be in the future.

Should you buy this console?

From our point of view, the released One S represents something similar to a modified American car for the European market. The device has various new features that will help interest a new audience.

For PC lovers who already own an Xbox One, and those who are not planning to buy a 4K TV, we would advise not to spend money and wait for Project Scorpio, which will be released in 18 months. By then, 4K TVs should be more advanced and cheaper, and before that, any console exclusives that also launch on Xbox One can be played.

However, if you've already invested in 4K hardware and want to either play the new Halo or get a more versatile 4K Blu-ray player, why not? The One S continues Microsoft's vision and is an improved all-in-one device that can handle 4K generation displays.

Microsoft Xbox One S

Advantages:

a capacious 2 TB HDD will hold all your games;

it's 4K, which is great, of course;

the console is more compact but does not have cooling problems.

Disadvantages:

if you don't have a 4K TV, there won't be any benefits;

the stand is almost impossible to detach;

project Scorpio will be released in about a year.

Conclusion: Microsoft's Xbox One S may look more compact, but it remains nothing more than a redesigned version of the Xbox One for 4K resolution.

Price: USD 399

The updated Xbox One S was Microsoft's answer to the PlayStation 4 Slim. The novelty also diminished in size and was repainted in white, the power supply moved inside, and the price dropped to $ 300 for the version with a 500 GB hard drive. Also offered are models for 1 and 2 TB, which, given the low download speed of games from the digital store Xbox Store, is quite justified. The Xbox One S Wireless Controller has also been improved.

Soap graphics

The main drawback of the original Xbox One - a graphics accelerator with a performance of only 1.4 TFlops - was inherited by the One S. Most games on the Microsoft console are launched at a resolution of only 1280x720 pixels, which makes the picture look fuzzy and blurry.

Profitable special offers

However, for those undemanding users, the Xbox One S can be a huge bargain. So, for a set of a console plus two games (Forza Horizon 3 car racing and the FIFA 17 football simulator) they ask for only a little more than for the console itself. Both games are new and, given the multiplayer, they will be enough for several months of entertainment. However, there is an additional monthly fee for access to multiplayer.

Game consoles have become part of our lives. Previously, each individual model was independent from the previous ones, and could only play those games that were intended for it. In our time, in the age of widespread popularization of games, and gaming in general, game consoles have acquired the ability to use game libraries of other models of consoles.

Meet! New model of game console from Microsoft - Xbox One X!

It opens up new gaming possibilities, allows you to plunge headlong into an attractive virtual world and allows you to try something that we could not have dreamed of before!

The company's developers have equipped it with backward compatibility with the Xbox One S and Xbox 360, so that everyone can create an incredible library of both old favorite games and new exclusive releases for Model X. Also, games from Xbox One X will be ported to the previous model of the company - Xbox One S.

Compared to earlier models xbox seriesThe One X has increased power, and therefore performance. Now we all have the opportunity to enjoy incredible image quality in Ultra HD resolution, while older models display Full HD images. This leap is truly breathtaking, because now consoles are on par with the graphics quality of even the most powerful computers.

The Xbox One X 1TB is priced at $ 499, but rest assured, that money won't be wasted.

Great design

The design of the console has undergone changes compared to the Xbox One S, but there are undoubtedly similarities, because at the time of the Xbox One S release, many were greatly impressed by the design of the console and Microsoft decided not to go far ...

The XBOX One X is smaller, making it more compact and easier to place anywhere in your home or apartment.
You can buy the Xbox One X in a gray design that looks stylish, modern and very futuristic.

The front panel features a neat and sleek disc slot, a launch button with the iconic Xbox badge, a USB port, an IR receiver and a sync button with headset and gamepad. The front design closely resembles the previous version, but the location of the disc slot has changed: it is now located at the bottom of the console.

Looking at this "miracle" of technology from Microsoft from the back, you will see two USB ports, HDMI output and separate input, power connector, infrared output, Ethernet port and optical audio output.

The Xbox One X controller is functionally identical to the Xbox One S accessory, the only difference being the visual design: a lovely gray finish that complements the console itself.

Specifications

Even before the official presentation of the console, its incredible specificationsthat predetermined the success of the project.

The new model is equipped with an 8-core process with a clock speed of 2.3 GHz, 12 GB of RAM type GDDR5. The console will have an astounding 6 teraflops of graphics power, thanks to the 1172 MHz GPU. "Box" has an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and the memory capacity is 1 TB.

The combination of Dolby Atmos and Blu-ray player gives the console more hardware options. Many were skeptical that it didn't use GPUs from the most popular companies like AMD and Nvidia, but what Microsoft was able to create amazed many. The console is really powerful and efficient!

Game power

Many people think that comparing Microsoft consoles and PlayStation models it is difficult to say which one is more powerful and why. But it is enough to pay attention to the technical characteristics and you will not have such a question. Craftsmen from Microsoft have taken the Xbox One X a big step into the future.

We were not in vain assured of the incredible abilities of the inner iron. Even before the official presentation, the developers said that the new Forza 7 game will be streamed in Ultra HD resolution at 60 frames per second. And you know, they didn't lie! But this did not become the limit of development.

Company employees showcased Forza Motorsport 7 and Gears of War 4 at the official demo of gaming capabilities

They made a splash! When playing Forza 7 on the Xbox One X console, you could get a close look at the car, not only inside, but also outside. Even the steering wheel trim looks so detailed and clear that it sometimes feels like a real racing sports car. Even when the camera is removed, the outside of the car looks great.

But everyone was really impressed by the elaboration of the game: when the car develops high speed, the external parts begin to rattle from the headwind, every little part starts to move. Trust me, it looks incredible!

A closer look at Gears of War 4 immediately catches the eye with a chic elaboration of light, as well as clear shadows under the heroes' feet, which can only be demonstrated in Ultra HD. The developers of the company said that they will gradually render all games in 4K images, and this news certainly makes you think about buying an Xbox One X as soon as possible.

Great news! If you want to buy an Xbox One X, then feel free to buy, because it will support all Xbox One S games by backward compatibility. This trend continued in all models of consoles from Microsoft, and the Xbox One X was no exception.

Opposite compatibility will also be present. Then a quite natural question arises "Why buy a new Xbox One X, the price of which is slightly higher, if it may seem that this situation is more beneficial to owners of Xbox One S?" This is not true.

Previously, when a new game was released, it had no installation base. The Xbox One X is different. By purchasing any game, you can play with friends over the network, since it is backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox One S.

The Special Edition will include Forza Motorsport 7 or Gears of War 4 along with the console.

What games will appear with the console

Microsoft Xbox One S is a 2016 game console with 4K Blu-ray player and HDR content support. This time, the developers have worked on the mistakes that they made three years ago in the Xbox One.

The advantages of the set-top box include a compact body, a modern set of communications, 4K video playback from Blu-Ray discs, a large amount of internal memory and compatibility with Xbox One. But its main advantages are a high-quality adjustment of Full HD-resolution to 4K and support for HDR content.

But to enjoy the wide dynamic range and clear picture you need a modern 4K TV. In addition, in a year, Microsoft plans to release a new console called Project Scorpio, which means the new Xbox will automatically become obsolete.

The Xbox One S does not feel like a new console, but rather like a compact version of the Xbox One with bugs fixed. It is most reasonable to buy a predecessor, which should be much cheaper, or wait for a new, more powerful model next year. You can choose the Xbox One S console if you have a 4K TV with HDR support. This is the only way you can appreciate the benefits of these technologies.

Design

Microsoft Xbox One S has received an updated design. Now it is a rectangular white block with compact dimensions.

The main body material is matte plastic. It may not look so pretty, but it is more practical in contrast to the semi-gloss PlayStation 4 case. An important innovation - the power supply is finally placed inside the case, and not outside, as it was before. At the same time, the console itself has become 40% more compact. The body of the Xbox One S is visually separated with a black stand that seems to fade into darkness. On the top right, the device's casing is perforated, there are also ventilation holes. All this looks unusual, but personally, such coloring and perforation reminded us more of a Soviet radio receiver, and not a modern gaming machine. On the bezel, you can see the optical drive and the power key, styled after the Xbox logo. Below them are a USB 3.0 connector and an IR transmitter.

Xbox One S can be installed both horizontally and vertically. In the second case, the console is not so reliable, besides, with horizontal inscriptions on the case, the manufacturer seems to hint at the main use case. Dimensions Xbox One S - 29.5 × 23 × 6.4 cm, weight - 2.9 kg. The console is only slightly thicker than the PlayStation 4, but 0.4 kg lighter.

Interfaces

Microsoft Xbox One S is equipped with a fairly modern set of ports and interfaces.

At his disposal are:

  • three USB 3.0 ports (external media, headsets, and so on)
  • HDMI 2.0a output for connecting to TV
  • HDMI input
  • optical audio output (for soundbar or sound systems)
  • network port (up to 1000 Mbps)
  • iR blaster output.

Note that HDMI has been updated to version 2.0a, so it now supports HDR and 4K video transmission at 60Hz. The separate connector for the Kinect touch controller has been removed, but it can be connected to the set-top box via a USB adapter.

Xbox One S supports more advanced high-speed and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Bluetooth has finally been added, which should make it easier to connect joysticks and other peripherals. The set-top box not only has an infrared port, but also an infrared blaster with which the Xbox One S is able to control other household devices. The optical drive supports the classic Blu-Ray gaming media. And unlike the new PlayStation 4 Pro, it plays 4K videos from Blu-ray discs.

Hardware filling

It sounds surprising and even strange, but the inside of the Xbox One S has remained much the same. Microsoft only slightly overclocked the video and bandwidth of the eSRAM memory. It looks like the company decided to save the hardware upgrade for the next Project Scorpio, which is scheduled for release in 2017.

The Xbox One S uses an AMD Jaguar 8-core processor, clocked at up to 1.75 GHz. As a graphics, there is an AMD chip based on Radeon with an increased frequency (914 MHz instead of 853 MHz). Along with this, the performance also slightly increased - from 1.31 Teraflops to 1.4, which means 1.4 trillion operations per second. As before, 8 GB of unified (shared for CPU and GPU) DDR3 RAM is used. Note that the PlayStation 4 has been using faster GDDR5 memory for a long time. The difference in lagging behind the competitor is solved using a buffer from eSRAM memory with increased bandwidth, which has grown from 204 GB / s to 219 GB / s.

As you already understood, the filling remains the same as that of its predecessor. But where did the power come to support higher 4K resolution and HDR content? The secret is simple: it's just a Full HD to Ultra HD upscaling, albeit a better one than TVs. This means that the picture will be clearer in PC games with true 4K resolution.

To enjoy the graphics enhancements, you'll need a 4K TV with HDR content. In addition, the game must meet these innovations, and there are still few of them. Separately, we note that you still have to suffer to get the TV to work in this mode and recognize the HDR signal from the set-top box. On sale you can find several versions of the Xbox One S - with a 500 GB, 1000 GB or 2 TB HDD. Unlike the PlayStation 4, you cannot change the hard drive in the console, but you can connect external media. In terms of device performance, we found the Xbox One S to be noisier and take a long time to install games.

Joystick

The Xbox One S joystick has undergone a slight redesign, but has not fundamentally changed. This is the same comfortable gamepad, but in our opinion, it has begun to look a little frivolous.

The plastic material has become more rough, thanks to this the joystick is more secure in the hand. Finally, the gamepad got Bluetooth. Analog sticks have received a special texture along the rims, due to which they will not slip under the fingers. As before, pressing the D-pad (cross) is clear, the triggers on the back can vibrate, which gives feedback in games.

The joystick weighs 280 grams and is powered by two AA AA batteries. The Kinect touch controller has not been abandoned, but it is not included in the basic package. Moreover, a special connector for it has disappeared from the body of the console, so you will have to buy an adapter with it.

Menu, multiplayer and more

For this parameter, nothing has changed. The console is backward compatible with the Xbox One - games, applications and proprietary functions work on the new console.

As before, the main menu is divided into four sections: Home, Community, OneGuide and Store. The first contains a list of games and previously launched applications. The Community has social features, OneGuide has video content, and the Store has a branded store with games, videos, music and more. In some games for the novelty, there is the possibility of multiplayer with PC owners.

The built-in Xbox One S player plays almost all audio and video formats. Many applications for the set-top box (ivi cinema, YouTube service, browser and some others) are free, but the subscription to the service Xbox live for multiplayer costs money. Once a month, Gold subscribers can download multiple games for free. But as a rule, these are not the most popular toys.
