Honoring Orthodox holidays is an integral part of the life of believers who strive to observe all canons and religious rites. - Twelve Orthodox holidays
These identities are also very important in the church calendar. They got the name twelve because they are included in the list of 12 most valuable holidays for Orthodox people after Easter. They, in turn, are divided into:
- Passing holidays are those that change their date every year (the day of their celebration is counted from the date of the Great Resurrection of Jesus Christ).
- Intransitive - having a constant date.
- Great posts
These are the days when you need to strictly abstain from eating. They are divided into two main subgroups:
- One-day fasts - restrictions that must be observed for no more than one day
- Multi-day fasts - fasts to be observed for weeks or even months
- Weeks
- Days of remembrance of the departed
On these days, families gather for a meal at home, go to the cemeteries to the graves of deceased relatives to commemorate them.

- Red numbers on the calendar - signify important church holidays
- Days highlighted pink- days of strict fasting
- Days highlighted in black square - days of commemoration of the dead
- The days highlighted in lilac are the days of non-strict fasting, when you can eat everything except meat and fish.
- Days highlighted in light purple - every Saturday and Wednesday when fasting is necessary, even if there is none

Church holidays in January 2017
In January we will celebrate a lot of religious holidays. The very first and biggest celebration is the Nativity of Christ, which is celebrated annually Jan. 7... From this day until the 17th, Christmas Weeks will begin - the days when, after a long and most difficult fast, you can afford to eat different meat dishes.
A week after Christmas - 14 january- we are expected at least significant holiday- Circumcision of the Lord. February 20 to 26 we will gorge ourselves on pancakes during Maslenitsa week, after which February 27 Great Lent will follow. It will last until Easter.

The whole March will be Lent, which is the strictest of all. Relaxation in food will only be allowed on a few Saturdays of this month - 11, 18 and 25 March... These will be the weeks of Great Lent.

April is a month of great religious celebrations. 7 numbers Orthodox Christians will celebrate the Annunciation Holy Mother of God.9 april is one of the major religious holidays - this is the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, which will begin the pre-Easter week.
16 april the entire Orthodox world will rejoice at the Great Feast of the Resurrection of God's Son Jesus Christ - Easter. Joyful days - Easter week - will last seven days from 17 to 24 April... It will be replaced by a general memorial day Rodonitsa ( 25th of April).

There is a new year in spiritual life, when one of those living in negligence begins to be jealous of salvation and pleasing God: for when someone decides to do this, then everything inside and outside is rebuilt anew and on new principles - the old passes by and everything is new. If you have it, - renew it; and if not, do it, and you will have a new year. The worthy celebration of the circumcision of the Lord and the memory of St. Basil the Great. The essence of the said change lies in the fact that from this moment a person begins to live solely for God for his salvation, whereas before he lived exclusively for himself, preparing his own destruction. Here he gives up his old habits, all the joys and everything in which he found pleasure; cuts off passions and lustful dispositions and accepts deeds of strict self-denial. And such a change exactly represents what, according to the Apostle, the circumcision of the heart should be - which the celebration of the circumcision of the Lord reminds and obliges us to, and the example of which is represented in his person by St. Basil the Great. So all objects, crowding in consciousness, in New Year agree on one thing - our inner renewal through the circumcision of the heart. If the Lord is pleased with someone to tune in the new year in this way, that is, not only to think so, but to introduce all this into life, he will celebrate the New Year in the most perfect way in a Christian way and prepare for the Christian passage of the whole summer. In the next New Year, he will only have to renew and revive what he has perceived now.

During the baptism, a bright white light suddenly flashed and the Holy Spirit descended to the ground in the form of a snow-white dove. And rang out loud voice from heaven - the Lord himself spoke. He told that Jesus is his son and that his blessing lives in him. This holiday symbolizes the appearance of the Holy Trinity: God, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, who descended to people in the form of a white dove.
After his baptism, Christ received an incredible gift and used it for the benefit of others.
Throughout the history of its existence, the Feast of Epiphany has “overgrown” with many traditions, rituals and signs. Perhaps the most important and ancient tradition is swimming in the ice-hole. For a long time, people went to the pond to swim in icy water, wash away all sins from themselves, and gain health for a whole year. It was believed that on this day water is charged with energy and is able to heal from all kinds of diseases.
Tatyana's Day
Each saint carries a special meaning for the Orthodox Church. These people were elevated to the face of saints for a certain great deed, therefore they are remembered to this day.
On February 25, the church “gave” to the Holy Great Martyr Tatiana (Titiana). She grew up and studied in the family of a noble Roman dignitary who secretly preached Christianity. The growing love for the Almighty gave Titiana the strength to do good on all earth. The young girl did not even want to get married, but devoted herself entirely to serving the church.
During the persecution that Christians were subjected to, they wanted to sacrifice the Holy Great Martyr Titian to a pagan idol. But the woman's faith did not shake, for this Emperor Alexander Sever gave the order to torture Titiana. During such mockery, the martyr did not betray her God and until her last breath she was faithful to him.
By the way, it is Titiana who is considered the patroness of students, therefore, January 25 is still familiar to us as Student's Day.

Nativity
At Christmas, the souls and hearts of Christians are filled with light, love and happiness. On this day, the Savior, Jesus Christ, was born, therefore everyone who honors and respects his laws should celebrate the holiday with dignity. Many songs written specifically for this winter celebration praise the Lord, the Mother of God and Christ himself.
On Holy evening, it is customary to visit each other, take the holy supper and regale the host with the hostess with it. Children on this day go from house to house and sing carols, sing songs, recite poems.
Christmas is also famous for fortune-telling, which, as a rule, come true. Girls from time immemorial conducted Christmas fortune-telling to determine their fate, find out about their beloved and find answers to a number of other questions.
Circumcision of the Lord
After birth, on the eighth day, Jesus Christ accepted Circumcision - this was the case with all newborn male babies. This holiday is also extremely important for the Orthodox Church.
January 14 is still familiar to all of us as the Old New Year. On this day, it is customary to see off everything that happened last year and hope for the best in the future. There is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
From January 13 to January 14, men come to the house of their relatives, friends or just neighbors to “sow” them with special cereals, to wish them all the best and health.
Baptism of the Lord or Holy Epiphany
As the Gospel says, John the Baptist, a mere mortal who led one of the Jewish sects, performed a great sacred act during his lifetime - he baptized thirty-year-old Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
During the baptism, a bright white light suddenly flashed and the Holy Spirit descended to the ground in the form of a snow-white dove. And there was a loud voice from heaven - it was the Lord himself who spoke. He told that Jesus is his son and that his blessing lives in him. This holiday symbolizes the appearance of the Holy Trinity: God, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, who descended to people in the form of a white dove.
After his baptism, Christ received an incredible gift and used it for the benefit of others.
Throughout the history of its existence, the Feast of Epiphany has “overgrown” with many traditions, rituals and signs. Perhaps the most important and ancient tradition is swimming in the ice-hole. For a long time, people went to the pond to swim in icy water, wash away all sins from themselves, and gain health for a whole year. It was believed that on this day water is charged with energy and is able to heal from all kinds of diseases.
Tatyana's Day
Each saint carries a special meaning for the Orthodox Church. These people were elevated to the face of saints for a certain great deed, therefore they are remembered to this day.
On February 25, the church “gave” to the Holy Great Martyr Tatiana (Titiana). She grew up and studied in the family of a noble Roman dignitary who secretly preached Christianity. The growing love for the Almighty gave Titiana the strength to do good on all earth. The young girl did not even want to get married, but devoted herself entirely to serving the church.
During the persecution that Christians were subjected to, they wanted to sacrifice the Holy Great Martyr Titian to a pagan idol. But the woman's faith did not shake, for this Emperor Alexander Sever gave the order to torture Titiana. During such mockery, the martyr did not betray her God and until her last breath she was faithful to him.
By the way, it is Titiana who is considered the patroness of students, therefore, January 25 is still familiar to us as Student's Day.
