We celebrate Evdokim's incantation. 13 August for church calendar Since ancient times, the saint of God Evdokim the Cappadocian has been remembered. Great-grandfathers referred him to the patron and benefactor of the hearth and family, therefore they asked the saint for health and good warm relations. The people called the religious holiday Evdokimov day.

The life of the pious Evdokim

Evdokim was born in the 9th century in Asia Minor in the city of Cappadocia, when the Byzantine ruler Theophilus ruled. He comes from a devout family. His mother Evdokia and father Vasily were noble, pious people whom the ruler himself knew.

At the age of sane, the man decided to give his short life to serving God, and to provide help to everyone who had a need. Before the Lord, he took a vow of chastity. Only with his mother he could talk about the secret.

The emperor, in gratitude for the sinless and decent life of the Cappadocian, appointed him to the post of ruler of the Kharsian region. He ruled the region reasonably and fairly. He judged people fairly, worried about the disadvantaged, supported orphans and widows. He fulfilled his functions not only as a servant, but also as an excellent servant of God.

For his spotless life and pure faith, he pleased the Lord and was invited into the kingdom at the age of 33. And already on the mortal bed, he commanded his brothers to rest him in the veils in which he would meet his death. Further, the righteous asked those present and relatives to leave the room, so that they would not see his torment, just as they would not see his gifts during his lifetime. There are facts that after the burial the relics of the righteous began to emit a warm light. And as soon as the soul left the body, people began to heal from diseases.

A year and a half passed, and the saint's mother came to bow to the remains of her beloved son. She missed her son very much, and begged to remove the stone, excavate the grave and open the coffin. They carried him out in their arms. Evdokim's clothes were changed.

The mother wanted to take the relics of her son to Constantinople, only the believers did not want to give up the expensive shrine. When the coffin was opened, everyone noticed that the face was as if it were alive, and a pleasant aroma emanated from the saint.

After a while, the monk Joseph, who was represented at the resting place of the righteous, took the remains to the capital, as the believer's mother wanted. There they were kept in the Church of the Virgin, which was built by the father and mother of a Cappadocian clergyman.

Customs to mark the date in Russia

Evdokimov day precedes the beginning of the Dormition Lent. Therefore, they tried to cleanse themselves before Lent. On this day, it was supposed to thank for everything. Fasting was not perceived as hungry. People feasted on fresh bread, berries and fruits. On Evdokimov day, the harrows were worshiped, and a harrow conspiracy was carried out.

Over the tool of labor, in a quiet voice, grateful words were spoken from a pure heart, so that the teeth would not wear out and would serve for a long time. Then we started to work.
At this time, the main product of the toilers, the turnip, was ripening in the gardens. They ate it raw, cooked porridge, fried it, baked pies with a filling, made turnip kvass to which blueberries, raspberries, and currants were added.

Legends and signs:

  • if the fog quickly disperses, excellent weather will come;
  • on Evdokimov day a gusty wind predicts a snowy winter;
  • it is already warming up in the sun, it will rain;
  • the cobweb is flying - the sunny weather will last for a long time;
  • bees do not fly out of the hives in a cloudless sky - wait for bad weather;
  • rye was sown on Evdokim;
  • the horse will not move from its place until the peasant expresses his gratitude to the harrow;
  • On August 13, it is imperative to work hard in the field or garden, then all matters will argue.

(see 1/14 August) Troparion of the righteous Evdokim, voice 4: From the earth calling thee to the Heavenly village / observes your body and is dead unharmed, holy Eudokim: / you are in integrity and pure living, blessed, / lived the purpose of cruelty, not desecrated. Kontakion of the righteous Evdokim, voice 2: Desiring the highest, copulating with the highest, / and the fiery chariot, by the Divine ascents of the good-natured, I made the soul, / beloved Eudokim, / lived on the earth, I am benevolent, I am grateful to all. Nothing can strike the consciousness of our contemporaries so much as the tragic experience of our people, who have shown so many martyrs and confessors. It is difficult to imagine in what incredible conditions this confession was carried out. Often people were directly forced to give up their faith. This was the simplest case, and the absolute majority said no. Often, persecutors immediately sentenced such a person to capital punishment, to death, or, conversely, retreated. But if only it were so, how easy it would be! If only one answer “I believe” could define your attitude to God, to Christ and to seal the truth of God with this! But the enemy was sophisticated, incredibly cunning, perfectly organized. This opens up, in particular, to those who had the opportunity to read the terrible protocols of interrogations, investigative cases, where everything is so confusing, so complicated. And yet there were those who, despite all the sophistication, thoughtfulness, organization of the extermination machine, remained capable of answering the persecutor: "I am with Christ, and I do not betray Him!"

13 August(July 31, Old Style - Church Julian Calendar). 10th week after Pentecost(tenth Sunday after the holiday Holy Trinity, Pentecost).Charging for the Assumption Fast. That is, the last day before this short but very strict Orthodox fast. Today in the Russian Orthodox Church the forefeast of the origin of the venerable trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord and the commemoration of 14 saints are celebrated.

Forefeast of the origin of the honest trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord... Eve of the great Orthodox holiday, with which the Assumption Lent traditionally begins. More details about this day itself, popularly called the "First Savior", its history, meaning and symbolism will be told tomorrow.

Righteous Evdokim the Cappadocian... This Byzantine saint lived and performed spiritual feats in the 9th century from the birth of Christ during the reign of the emperor Theophilos ( 829-842 years). A native of a noble family, righteous Evdokim from a young age devoted himself to serving God. He took a vow of celibacy and even avoided talking to women.

For many virtues, the emperor Theophilus appointed Evdokim as the ruler of the Kharsian region. The saint humbly accepted this high office as obedience, and ruled not as a despot, but as a servant of God, taking care of the poor, orphans and widows. The Lord called the righteous Evdokim young, at the age of Christ - at the age of 33.

Martyr Julitta of Caesarea... Saint, who suffered during the years of anti-Christian persecutions of the pagan emperor Diocletian, who ruled the Roman Empire in 284-305 years from the Nativity of Christ. One crafty pagan deceived the Christian Julitta of all her property, and when the future martyr went to court, the defendant reported that she was a Christian. Julitta was offered to renounce Christ in exchange for an estate, but she resolutely rejected this, and was burned at the stake in 304 or 305 from the Nativity of Christ.

Saint German, Bishop of Oser... One of the most revered saints in France in the 5th century BC, Heavenly patron of the city of Auxerre. Revered in both the Western and the Orthodox Churches. He became famous as a fighter against heresies, and is also known as a teacher and spiritual mentor of St. Patrick (Patrick), the enlightener of Britain. Saint Herman died in 448 year in Ravenna.

Monk Martyr Dionysius of Vatopedi... Saint athos 19th century, a monk of the famous Vatopedi monastery, tortured for the Christian faith by the Turks on the island of Crete in 1822 year.

Hieromartyr Benjamin (Kaaznsky), Metropolitan of Petrograd and Gdov, and those killed like him Hieromartyr Archimandrite Sergius (Shein) and Martyrs Yuri Novitsky and John Kovsharov. Saints from among the new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church, who suffered in 1922 in the course of the atheist process of church values.

In the summer of that year, 86 people were put on trial, led by Metropolitan Benjamin of Petrograd and Gdovsk. At the trial, Vladyka, who was eventually sentenced to death, behaved courageously, devoting his last word to proving the innocence of other defendants, clearly showing that even in the face of the executioners, one must remain faithful to Christ.

Hieromartyrs Vladimir Kholodkovsky and Ioann Rumyantsev, presbyters, priest Konstantin Razumov, presbyter, martyr Maxim Rumyantsev, martyr Anna Serova and confessor Elizabeth Rumyantseva. These saints also suffered during the years of Soviet theomachous persecution and for their holy sufferings were glorified among the new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church.

We congratulate all Orthodox Christians on the memory of these saints! We are glad to congratulate those who received names in their honor in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism or monastic tonsure!

Commemoration of the Hieromartyrs Metropolitan Benjamin (Kazan), Archimandrite Sergius (Shein), Martyrs Yuri (Novitsky) and John (Kovsharov)

Hieromartyr Benjamin(in the world Vasily Pavlovich Kazansky) was born in 1874 on the Nimenkoy graveyard of the Kargopol district of the Olonets province in the family of a priest. In 1893-1897. studied at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. In 1895 he was tonsured a monk, in 1896 he became a hieromonk; from 1902 - Archimandrite and Rector of the Samara Spiritual Seminary - 438 - Seminary, from 1905 - Rector of the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary. In 1910, Saint Benjamin was ordained bishop of Gdovsk, vicarius of the Saint Petersburg diocese.

Vladyka Benjamin loved to serve in churches located on the outskirts of workers. On Christmas or Easter, Vladyka usually served at the Putilovsky or Obukhovsky factories. Vladyka was known as a brilliant preacher who, with his word, attracted both the capital's intelligentsia and the inhabitants of working-class suburbs to the church. In 1917, the clergy and laity of Petrograd elected him their metropolitan. In 1917-1918. he took part in the work of the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, was elected a member of the Synod, and by the decision of the Council on January 26, 1918, he was appointed sacred archimandrite of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Vladyka Benjamin was probably the hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church most distant from politics and could maintain tolerant relations with the secular authorities even during the years of the civil war.

On May 16/29, 1922, the day after the appeal to the flock with a message directed against the Renovationist schism, Vladyka Benjamin was arrested and put on trial in the case of confiscation church values... At the trial of a group of clergy and laity on false accusations of counter-revolutionary activities and concealment of church values, held June 10 - July 5, 1922 in Petrograd, Vladyka behaved with exceptional courage, used the word given to defend other defendants and to openly confess the name of Christ. Metropolitan Benjamin, together with a group of believers, was sentenced to death. The verdict was carried out on the night of 12 to 13 August new. Art. 1922 at the Powder Warehouses station near Petrograd. Together with him were shot the now canonized Archimandrite Sergius (Shein), laymen Yuri Novitsky and Ivan Kovsharov.

Hieromartyr Sergius(in the world Vasily Pavlovich Shein) was born on December 30, 1870 in the village of Kolpna, Novosilsky district, Tula province. Graduated from the school of jurisprudence in 1893. He was a member of the IV State Duma, where he worked in the Commission for Church Affairs. He was a member of the secretariat of the All-Russian Local Council of 1917-1918. In the fall of 1920 he took monastic vows with the name Sergius, and was soon ordained a priest. In the rank of archimandrite, he was rector of the Patriarchal Compound in Petrograd. He led a strict life of a prayer book and an ascetic, while at the same time carrying obediences related to affairs of administration, he held the post of assistant chairman of the board of the Society of United Petrograd Orthodox Parishes. In 1922 he was arrested in connection with the confiscation of church valuables and sentenced to death. In the last minutes before the execution, he prayed for his executioners: "Forgive them, God, they do not know what they are doing ..."

Martyr Yuri(Yuri Petrovich Novitsky) was born in 1882 in the city of Uman, Kiev province. He graduated from Kiev University, was a professor of criminal law at Petrograd University, was a member of a religious-philosophical society, lectured on the history of the Church. He worked on the creation of patronage for arrested persons and special courts for juvenile delinquents. He was engaged in church and charitable activities, was the chairman of the board of the Society of United Petrograd Orthodox parishes. In 1922 he was arrested in connection with the confiscation of church valuables and sentenced to death. At the trial, he was calm, gave clear and solid testimony about the activities of the board, proving that it was exclusively engaged in church issues. At the trial, defense lawyer Ravich said about him: “He fought all his life against the death penalty, to alleviate the fate of the families of the convicts, and now he himself is threatened the death penalty and he leaves behind a 14-year-old daughter. "

Martyr John(Ivan Mikhailovich Kovsharov) was born in 1877 in Odessa. He was a sworn attorney, legal adviser to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, a member of the board of the Society of United Petrograd Orthodox Parishes. In 1922 he was arrested in connection with the confiscation of church valuables and sentenced to death.
Hieromartyrs Metropolitan Benjamin (Kazan), Archimandrite Sergius (Shein), Martyrs Yuri (Novitsky) and John (Kovsharov) were canonized by the Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Glorious Church on March 31 - April 4, 1992.
