Do you know that...

On March 9 (22), the Orthodox Church celebrates the commemoration day of the 40 Martyrs of Sebastia, one of the most revered Christian holidays. 40 Martyrs of Sebastia - 40 soldiers who were martyred for their faith in Christ in 320. These warriors, who were originally from Cappadocia (now the territory of Turkey), were in Sebastia as part of the Roman army.

The military leader, an ardent supporter of paganism, demanded that they bring sacrifice to the pagan gods. The soldiers refused, for this they were stripped and placed in custody in a lake covered with ice. For those who were ready to renounce Christ, a warm bath was arranged on the shore. One of the soldiers ran there the next morning, but died on the threshold. One Roman joined the men in the lake.

Temple prayer is a special school of prayer. You need to educate yourself to strive to understand what is being said in the temple. But even if by thought we move away from prayer because of our weakness, then still being in the church, in the grace-filled atmosphere of prayer of other people, we are under the constant influence of Divine grace. That is why prayer in the temple has a special meaning, significance and power, for where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them (Matthew 18:20). Fasting and prayer are great means of elevating the soul, overcoming sins, changing the inner state of a person. In Great Lent it is especially necessary for us to use these means to help ourselves, to change our inner world, in order to be closer to God.
