Verb control is the ability of a verb to require the use of words dependent on it in a specific case (with or without a specific preposition).
Control is characteristic of verbs in other languages, for example, in Russian:
- to be surprised (to whom? what?) - the dependent noun is in the dative case,
- admire (who? what?) - instrumental case,
- hope (for whom? for what?) - accusative case with a preposition.
In English, verbs also often require the use of a certain preposition, which must be memorized along with the verb, for example:
hope (for smth.) - hope (for smth.)
insist (on smth.) - to insist (on smth.)
rely (on, upon smb.) - trust (smb.), rely (on smb.)
Often the control of verbs in German and in Russian is the same, and the use of such verbs does not cause difficulties:
sehen j-n (Akk.) - to see smb., smth. (wine.)
helfen j-m (Dat.) - to help smb. (dates)
However, there is a significant number of verbs that do not coincide in control in Russian and German, for example:
sich interessieren für Akk. be interested in smth. (creative)
Ich interessiere mich für Musik. - I'm interested in music.
As can be seen from the example, in Russian the verb "to be interested" requires after itself a noun in the instrumental case without a preposition, and in German - an accusative with a preposition für (which is most often translated into Russian "for, for").
When controlling a verb, not the most common meaning of the preposition, in which it is usually memorized, can be realized, therefore the use of just such a preposition with a given verb may seem "illogical" for a non-native speaker. The same German preposition can be translated differently into Russian, and vice versa: arbeiten an D. work on smth.
teilnehmen an D. participate in smth.
denken an A. - think about smth.
talk about - sprechen über A.
take care of smth. - sorgen für A.
dream of smth. - träumen von D.
The most common verbs, the control of which should be given special attention, since due to the discrepancy with the Russian language, errors occur when using them:
1. gratulieren + Dat (zu) - Germans congratulate in the dative case. I congratulate you By your birthday ... etc.
2. anrufen + Akk - call (with accusative case!). Literally: I'm calling you \ I'll dial you.
3.denken an + Akk \ sich erinnern an + Akk - think about \ remember about ...
4.aufhören mit + D. - stop doing something (yes, it is used with the preposition MIT)
5. beantworten + Akk - to answer something (in German the preposition HA is absent in this case) Ich beantworte die Frage. no pretexts are needed.
6. bedanken sich bei D. | für A. - to thank smb. | for
entschuldigen sich bei D. | gegen G. / für A. - to apologize to smb. | for
(there are two whole prepositions, and different cases follow)
7. beschäftigen sich mit D. - do smth. (the subject you are busy with will be transmitted through the MIT preposition)
8.entscheiden sich für A. - make up your mind for smth. (in this case, für indicates affiliation)
9.freuen sich über A. - to rejoice at something. (accomplished)
freuen sich auf A. - to enjoy smth. (upcoming)
10. kennen lernen A. - to meet smb. (an excuse is not needed at all). Ich habe dich kennengelernt.

Prepositions refer to service parts of speech, the task of which is to link words in a sentence by manipulating these words. Prepositions can have a wide variety of meanings, which can, in particular, have a temporal and spatial connotation. Based on this, such prepositions denote time and place and, when combined with controlled words, answer the questions “when? - wann? "," Where? - wo? "," Where? - wohin? "," From where? - woher? " and others.
Prepositions of place and time in the German language represent two large groups, along with the third, which includes prepositions, in the semantics of which abstract connections are laid.
Prepositions of place in German
Preposition control |
Where? — Wohin? |
Where? — Wo? |
Where? — Woher? |
Akkusativ (accusativecase -Akk.) |
before - bis, through, through - durch, against - gegen, around, around - um | along - an… entlang, around, around - um, um ... herum |
|
Dativ (dativecase- D.) |
(towards) to - nach, (towards) to - zu | from - ab, about, at, at, near, - bei, against gegenü
ber(can come before and after the controlled word), from - von … aus |
from - aus, from - von |
Genitiv (genitive -G.) |
outside, outside - ausserhalb, inside, in - innerhalb | ||
Prepositions with different controls |
on, y (vertical surface), about - an, on (horizontal surface) - auf, behind, behind, behind - hinter, along - entlang(can stand before and after the controlled word), inside, in - in, near, at, near - neben, above, above - ü ber, below, under - unter, in front, in front - vor, between - zwischen |
Prepositions with different controls can be distinguished by asking questions to the corresponding phrases: to the question “where? - wo? " will answer the dative (Dativ), and the question “where? - wohin? " - accusative (Akkusativ) case. For instance:
- Du musst richtig andeinemTisch sitzen! - You must sit properly at your table! (Here the circumstance answers the question "where? - wo?", And, accordingly, Dativ is used).
- Setz dich an den Tisch und iss dein Abendbrot in Ruhe! - Sit down at the table and eat your supper in peace! (In this case, the circumstance answers the question "where? - wohin?", And, accordingly, Akkusativ is used).
The preposition "opposite - gegenüber" always comes after the pronoun, and if used with a noun, it can either precede it or follow it. For instance:
- Gegenüber unserem Büro hat man eine moderne Schwimmhalle gebaut. = Unserem Büro gegenüber hat man eine moderne Schwimmhalle gebaut. - A modern swimming pool was built in front of our office.
- Ihm gegenüber ist ein schöner Wald. - Opposite him is a beautiful forest.
The preposition "along - entlang" is quite special: perhaps it is the only German preposition that has not double, but triple control (Genitiv - Dativ - Akkusativ), for example:
- Sie ging schnell den fluss entlang(Akk.). - She walked quickly along the river bank.
- Diese Eisenbahn geht entlang dem Tunnel(D.). - This railway was laid along the tunnel.
- Diese Eisenbahn geht entlang des Tunnels(G.). - This railway was laid along the tunnel.
