Parents' day: how to remember the dead according to the canons of Christianity

In 2019, Radonitsa (parent's day) is on May 7, on Tuesday - on the 9th day after Easter, April 28.

How our Slavic ancestors honored the dead.

The ancient Slavic funeral rite in different places was carried out in different ways, although in principle the method was the same - burning the body. The bones were then collected and buried in a special way. And more often they took the earth from the ashes and revered it as a memory of the dead, burying it in the churchyard.
According to Slavic canons, on March 1 there were celebrations in honor of the dead, and they were dedicated to the goddess of Winter and Death - Morena. The ceremony was held at dawn, and it was called "funeral". At first, a stuffed animal of the harsh goddess was burned, which symbolized the departure of winter and the rebirth of nature, that is, the victory of life over death. No matter how strange it may seem in our time, but it was a real feast, but - in honor of the dead! The ancient pagan Slavs brought food and drink, painted eggs to the graves, and, of course, lamented for the dear departed people, remembered them with kind words, asked to protect the living ... The commemorations were timed to coincide with Maslenitsa and other Slavic celebrations. Let us dwell on, perhaps, the brightest memorial rite - "Grandfathers".
It is almost forgotten by Russians, but it is remembered and celebrated in Ukraine and Belarus to this day. Before the introduction of Christianity, this rite was carried out for 10-14 days, but the main commemoration should always fall on Saturday. Later, it changed its original name and became known as "parental Saturdays". If you pay attention to the name, you might think that only deceased men were honored. However, this is not so: there were both "Babas", which were held on Friday, and "Children", on Thursday. These days it was customary to carry necessarily hot food to the grave - it was believed that souls were saturated with steam and the smell of delicious food. On an improvised table, they laid out devices in larger quantities than for the audience - the rest were for the ancestors.
The ceremony began at dusk, with candles lit, and in some areas - even at bonfires. Before the start of the meal, all the dead were called out by name, after which they were supposed to be silent for a while, stepping aside. But the main celebration took place at home, after visiting the cemetery. And it began with the fact that the head of the family solemnly invited the deceased to the table with approximately the following words: “Holy Fathers, come to us! Eat what God has sent. "
Of course, it was not complete without drinks - it was mainly intoxicated honey or mash. In some localities, some of the alcohol was poured out the window or under the table - thus regaining the departed. The same was true for food - sometimes they put a spoon in a bowl of food and left everything on the windowsill or in the yard. The half-eaten was also left for the night - in case the soul wants to eat at night - or simply put the leftovers under any tree.
The "grandfathers" were held in a strict atmosphere befitting the occasion. No songs, frequent absences, especially tales. The knives were missing, as were the forks. Understanding perfectly well that the world of the dead and the world of the living are separated by an impenetrable wall, the owners did not allow them, with all due respect to the deceased, to stay in the house for a long time. They saw off the “guests” like this: “Holy Fathers! We ate and drank, but now go with God! " At the same time, they sprinkled water on the floor, and sometimes they drew crosses on the doors with a candle.
On these memorial days, it was impossible to do housework, the only exception was cooking. A special prohibition was imposed on activities related to sewing, as well as on intimate life. It was believed that a child conceived these days would suffer from various kinds of pathologies. It was not allowed during the period of widespread commemoration and marriage. According to the ancestors, all these actions disturb the souls of the dead, making it impossible to protect those who remain on earth.

How to commemorate the dead according to the canons of Christianity

Some people think that remembering relatives of the deceased means visiting the cemetery and having a feast with an abundance of snacks and alcohol. But this is not so - the commemoration should either not contain strong drinks at all, or there should be very few of them. In addition, a visit to the grave and a feast is far from the only way to honor the memory of ancestors. How can this be done correctly, in accordance with Christian traditions? This is what our further conversation will be about.
The first stage is to distribute apples, sweets, cookies to beggars, who can always be found in the cemetery or near the temple, and just on the streets. According to the teachings of the Church, it is this kind of alms that can alleviate the posthumous lot of the soul. By giving to the poor, we multiply the number of those who pray for the souls of the departed. In addition, by giving alms in the name of Christ, we ourselves are doing for Him a pleasant and useful deed - His words are known: "He who gives to the beggar, he gives to me!"

The memorial feast is the next link in the general commemoration. Mandatory are kutia, unsweetened jelly or compote, honey, pancakes. Cutlery should only contain spoons. To enhance memory, and not to "feed" the soul of the deceased, as some believe, it is customary to leave a place and cutlery at the table and for the deceased. Before starting the meal, everyone present needs to pray. Everyone can read the prayer that he knows, you can also turn to God in your own words with a request to provide the deceased with a good life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Remember that any, the shortest prayer is better than none at all.
But, nevertheless, the most powerful part of the rite is the help of the Church: I mean the liturgy for the dead, or, in other words, the offering of a bloodless sacrifice for their salvation. In fact, this church rite is the strongest and most powerful means for reaching the departed with God's mercy. Here the Lord Himself sacrifices Himself and thereby extends His mercy to the departed.
By offering this bloodless sacrifice, along with prayers, the sins of the deceased, voluntary and involuntary, are atoned for, and his soul reaches a blissful, peaceful state: Christ begs His Father to forgive a sinful, lost soul.
How is a bloodless sacrifice made? Particles (proskomedia) are removed from the prosphora for commemorating the soul. These proskomedia are immersed in the Life-giving Blood of Christ, while the priest says: "Wash away, Lord, the sins of those who were remembered here by Your Blood ...". In order to commemorate the deceased in this way, before the start of the liturgy, you need to submit notes "about health" and "about repose" with names. Submission of notes is usually paid, but the fee is very small, sometimes purely symbolic. It will be useful to donate at least the smallest amount for the needs of the Temple.
In addition, there are private services in the Orthodox Church. They are called "demands" - that is, they are carried out on demand, by order of the suffering. This is a prayer for the living and a requiem for the dead. Requisites are performed at the end of the Liturgy and ordered at the same place where the notes are accepted. In monasteries and churches, orders are also taken for the so-called "magpie" - for 40 days, for six months or for a year - prayers for the living and the dead.
On special days, the Church also creates commemorations - ecumenical requiems - these days are called Ecumenical parental Saturdays. It is impossible to say in advance exactly when these days will come, since they are connected with the rolling Easter cycle. If you wish, you can always get information about these days from any clergyman.

And the last thing. Remembrance can be considered correct only on condition of our sincere love for the departed, which is a conductor of Divine love. The Lord Himself bequeathed to love our neighbors as ourselves, and this love should extend not only to the living, but also to the dead.

What should never be done on parental day and how to remember the dead correctly?

Vitaly Alexandrovich Yavkin, catechist of the Resurrection Cathedral in Semey, tells about this and many other things.

On Easter, many people visit the cemetery where the graves of their loved ones are. Unfortunately, in some families there is a blasphemous custom to drink alcohol on this day. But even those who do not do this often do not know how exactly it is possible and necessary to remember the dead correctly. And even more so, not many people know at all why the parent's day is called Radonitsa and copes precisely on the 9th day after Easter.

On the Tuesday of the second week after Easter, which is called St. Thomas's Week, the Orthodox Church celebrates Radonitsa - the day of special commemoration of the dead, the first after Easter. This is an ancient Christian holiday, which John Chrysostom mentions at the beginning of the fourth century.

It was accepted on Radonitsa, and this continues to this day, with families to go to cemeteries, to the graves of their loved ones and relatives, to mourn them, reliving their loss again, to remember them, listing their good deeds that the deceased performed during their earthly life, remember the good distinctive features of their character, as if talking with the deceased, believing that they hear us on that day. Etymologically, the word "Radonitsa" goes back to the words "kind" and "joy", and, moreover, Radonitsa's special place in the annual circle of church holidays is right after the Bright Easter week.

Radonitsa, as it were, obliges Christians not to go deep into worries about the death of loved ones, but, on the contrary, to rejoice at their birth into another life - eternal life. The victory over death, won by the life and resurrection of Christ, supplants the sadness of temporary separation from relatives.

As far as the 9th day after Easter is concerned, it is simply a matter of the Church Rite. Usually, after the Easter holidays, on the very first weekday, during which we can serve a panikhida, Radonitsa falls. Throughout Bright Week (week) we rejoice in the Resurrection of the Savior, and only on Tuesday of the second week should we remember our dear departed. First of all - come to the Church, order funeral services, pray for the salvation of their souls, and only then - go to decorate the graves of loved ones.

Is it possible to mourn the departed often and visit their graves often? Or is it better to believe that they are already in the Kingdom of God, which means that they are better off than we are, and there is no need to bother them and torment yourself?

And again I will answer that we need not to grieve and cry, but to pray for our dead. They can be commemorated both in the church and with good deeds in memory of them. But keep in mind, we do not know where the person dear to us ended up after death: in the Kingdom of God or in hell. For this, we will do good deeds so that the Lord would take him to Himself.

As for tears, there is such a sin called "self-eating" when a person grieves more than necessary, thinks how much he has not given to the deceased, how much he could have done for him, but did not have time or did not consider it necessary. You need to appreciate a person, respect and cherish during his life, so that after death you do not have to ask for forgiveness at his grave. After death, it is no longer possible to make up for lost time.

What is better and more correct on the parent's day: to put a candle in the church for the repose of the dead, to remember them in your soul with kind words, or to gather your relatives and friends at home and remember those who have gone into the world with a dinner with alcohol? And in general, how does the Orthodox Church relate to the presence of alcoholic beverages on the table, both on the parent's day and on the day of the funeral itself?

Alcoholic drinks at memorial dinners are strictly prohibited by the Church. Remembering the deceased loved ones with alcohol, we desecrate their memory, do not honor it. They expect only prayers from us, not lavish dinners. We must pray for those who are no longer around. This is done because death very often comes suddenly, and a person simply does not have time to prepare for it, to be reconciled with God, to repent of all his sins. If we confine ourselves at the commemoration only to the arrangement of the table (as is often the case), spend all our energy on this, and forget about the church commemoration, then we will not bring any benefit to the soul of the deceased.

How does the Orthodox Church relate to the custom of eating at the cemetery after people put the churchyard in order? Should I leave a glass of vodka and a piece of bread “for the deceased” on the grave?

We can remember deceased loved ones at the cemetery, but this must be done according to the rules. Having corrected the grave after winter, we have the right to arrange a memorial dinner at the cemetery. But it must be started with a prayer for the deceased. After the meal, you need to read the prayer again.

Once again, I draw your attention to the fact that alcohol is unacceptable. Also, you cannot leave alcohol and food on the grave. This is a pagan echo, when in cemeteries it was customary to arrange not only feasts and dances, but also whole gladiatorial fights. Also, food attracts crowds of drunkards to the graves, who rummage through every wreath in search of alcohol and cigarettes, flocks of stray animals come for them. Both those and others trample the graves of people dear to us, and the dogs do lie on the gravestones. Indeed, during our lifetime, none of us would have allowed a dirty stray dog \u200b\u200bto lie next to his mother, father or brother. Also, food attracts flies and worms to the grave. You cannot stick into the grave and light cigarettes just because the deceased liked to smoke. I repeat, he only needs our prayers.

But after all, not only drunken people go to the cemeteries on their parents' day in search of vodka and food, but also children, hoping to find sweets, cookies or gingerbread on the grave that their drunken parents will never buy them. Can't you leave food for them?

These children are sent to the cemetery by degraded parents. And each such child is looking not only for a candy for himself, but also for a cup for mom or dad. They all know that there is a free refectory at our church, where a person of any religion can come any day of the week and eat. But neither these children nor their parents come to us, because there is only one rule: you need to come to the refectory sober and clean. For the most part, such people are drunk, dirty, foul-mouthed. They behave unworthily, just like those people who stand collecting alms near the gate of the temple. Many parishioners, out of ignorance of their own, give them this alms, which is strictly forbidden. After all, they take this money exclusively for alcohol.

Yes, we must give alms, do good deeds, feed and clothe those in need, but this must be done wisely. If we see that a person really needs, and even better, if we know this person, we are obliged to help him. But if we see that a hungry vagrant is sitting, then he does not need to give money, it is better to buy him food. For he, having drunk the money you gave, will turn your good deed into an evil one.

Where did the custom of decorating the graves of loved ones come from with flowers and wreaths and marking the burial place with a hill and a cross above it?

The Church has a negative attitude towards decorating graves with flowers and wreaths. This custom came to us at the end of the 19th century from Europe, where they began to decorate graves with flowers and wreaths. At that time, merchants bought out entire botanical gardens, and also set up parks on the graves of their ancestors. The great Saint John of Kronstadt also said that if you have extra money that you want to spend, give it out better to those in need. Take to an orphanage, nursing home, where it hurts, hungry and hard.

You cannot decorate graves with artificial flowers, this is a deception before God. Even the Church is decorated only with fresh flowers during the big holidays. Fake flowers are a fake victim. If you want to decorate the grave, do it with fresh flowers. But provided that these are flowers from your garden. If purchased, then do not need them. It is better to distribute this money to the really needy people. Your deceased loved one needs good deeds in memory of him, and not a pointless waste of money and not a bouquet. We carry these flowers to calm our own souls; the dead need only our prayers. The number of colors (even or odd) does not matter. This is just superstition.

No wreaths are needed either. This is not our custom. He was condemned by the holy fathers. According to all the rules, an Orthodox grave should be arranged as follows: a simple light fence is needed so that animals or people do not trample the grave, if a mound is erased from the face of the earth. Hill means the position of the body of the deceased. The cross means that an Orthodox Christian is buried here. During life, we designate ourselves as Orthodox pectoral cross. After death - cross on the grave. Erected in the earth and rising to heaven, it signifies the faith of Christians that the body of the deceased is here in the earth, and the soul is in heaven, that under the cross is hidden a seed that grows for eternal life in the Kingdom of God. The cross must be made of wood.

But he is not durable. The marble slabs look much more beautiful and richer ... Let those around you see that a man from a wealthy family is buried here, for whom they did not spare money even after death, that is, an expensive stone monument was erected, and not a cheap wooden cross.

The rotted and fallen in time, the cross is buried on the grave, then a new one is placed. Stone slabs and steles are absolutely unnecessary. From a moral point of view, the Church condemns such "eternal" monuments. Because they are worried about the relatives of the deceased. The cemetery may remain ownerless. It is destroyed by looters, and then the sidewalks are paved with these gravestones. They walk on them, spit, put out cigarette butts. As a living example, I can cite the cemetery that used to be where the Spartak stadium is now. Before the revolution, it was the burial place of Christians. In the early 60s, it was destroyed, and gravestones were taken away throughout the city. It got to the point that they were paving the sidewalks. Many of these slabs are covered with paint and covered with cement. They were sidewalks, they were trampled underfoot. If you want your mother, father, brother to walk by their names, to spit on their names - put such a stove. The Church does not forbid. But this is wrong and not good ... People still dig up these slabs and bring them to us in the Resurrection Cathedral, where we keep them.

People often put dentures, glasses, coins to redeem a place in Paradise, even mobile phones in the coffin with the deceased. In other words, they bury with a person everything that he often used during his lifetime. Is it correct?

When we bury our loved ones, we should not put anything in the coffin except what is supposed to be. And this is a veil, a pectoral cross, a crown on the forehead. If you don't know what to put, you need to ask at the church. There should be no foreign objects in the coffin. All of them are an echo of paganism, when they were buried in boats, dumping whole herds of slaughtered cattle there ... With regards to glasses, then if the deceased had eight pairs of glasses in his entire life, what, would you like to put all eight? Of course not. It's too much. You don't need glasses or dentures to meet God.

Not so long ago, one of our priests was invited to a funeral service for the deceased, who passed away young. And what was the surprise of the father when he saw that a cigarette was inserted into the teeth of the deceased, and it was smoking! When the priest asked what was going on, the relatives of the deceased replied that during his lifetime he was very fond of smoking. And this is his last cigarette, because after the funeral service he will be buried. The priest refused the funeral service and explained to the relatives of the deceased that their actions were blasphemy and mockery of the corpse, to which he did not want to join.

What to do when the deceased come to us in a dream and ask for something (belt, socks, cigarettes, glasses)? What is more correct in this case: to go to the cemetery and leave this thing on the grave, or still put a candle in the church for the peace of a loved one and pray for him?

This happens quite often, if people do not commemorate the deceased, do not light candles in church, do not order a magpie, if they do not even have time to pray for him. It is not a dead person who comes into our dreams. Our deceased relative is either in heaven or in hell. And they don't come from there. A guardian angel comes into our dreams, which is sent by the Lord. And this angel takes on the image of our deceased mothers, fathers, in a word, those who had an authoritative meaning for us. If we do not listen to them, we will not listen to anyone, even if the Lord Himself comes to us.

A request for any thing should not be taken literally. The deceased does not ask for a belt, watch or glasses, but a prayer or good deeds in memory of him. After such dreams, you need to order a magpie in the church, put a funeral candle. After visiting the temple, you can put a candle at home in front of the icon and pray for someone who is no longer with us.

If possible, buy the thing that the deceased asks for and give it to those in need. You cannot bury anything on the grave. The burial place is not a trash heap. This place is sacred. It's like a temple. You will not bury anything on the territory of the Church, will you? You cannot do this at the grave of a once beloved or respected person.

The things of the deceased after his funeral should be distributed to those in need. I would also like to remind that elderly people who already feel the arrival of their own death need to have time to divide all their property among the heirs during their lifetime, you need to give them instructions on how to live on. The opinion that if a person has given everything away, then he will soon die, is a superstition. It should not be allowed that after the death of a person, when his body has not yet cooled down, a war broke out between the heirs because of who will get more and who will get less valuable property of the deceased, the soul of the deceased, looking at this, will grieve. All your material issues need to be resolved here and now, that is, during life.

- Is it possible to put a funeral candle in a church if you do not know for sure whether a deceased person was baptized or not?

You can put candles. However, it is impossible to order memorial services and magpies. Also, you cannot pray for him with church prayer. You can only pray in your own words: Lord, forgive all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, if this is possible.

- How often should the deceased be commemorated?

It is very important to remember the deceased, on the day of his death, on the 9th and 40th days, in six months and on the anniversary after death, as well as on the day of his earthly birth, on the day of remembrance of the saint whose name he bore, and on parental days ... According to church tradition, for forty days after death, the soul of the deceased prepares for God's judgment. From the first to the third day she dwells in the places of the earthly life of the deceased, from the third to the ninth she is shown the heavenly abodes, from the ninth to the fortieth - the torment of sinners in hell. On the fortieth day, God's decision is made, where the soul of the deceased will be located before the Last Judgment - when the souls again unite with the transformed bodies, and the endless life of all mankind begins in a new, transformed world, where each will take his place according to the passage of earthly life and in many respects depending from the prayers of the Church for him after his death. Therefore, the Church has established that a special commemoration of the departed should be performed on the third, ninth and fortieth days. And, of course, you need to remember the deceased every time you visit church. You need to go here as often as possible. This is important both for us, the living, and for those who have already died and for whom we pray.

- How does the Orthodox Church view cremation?

The method of burial through cremation of the body, which is quite popular now in big cities, is completely non-Orthodox. It cannot be acceptable to a believer.

Thanks for the informative conversation. All that you have told can be learned only in the Church, for visiting which, alas, there is not always time. What are your wishes for the Semey residents?

Remember, the goal of every Christian's life is to save the soul. That is, the inheritance after the bodily death and the Second Coming of Christ, the eternal blessed stay with God. And the more good deeds we do, the more sincere prayers we address to God, the more grace we will receive from him. Love your loved ones during life, here and now. Then, after death, it will be too late. And it is better today to say words of love to living parents than crying tomorrow at their grave.

The interview was conducted by Elena FOMENKO

Many Orthodox Christians are wondering how to properly spend Parents' Day. This day is specially designed to honor and and deceased loved ones. In another way, the ninth day from Easter is called Radonitsa. In the traditions of Orthodoxy, such a mournful day of remembrance plays an important role.

Memorial Day and its history

On the first Tuesday after Easter celebrations, a full memorial service is served in the churches for all dead Christians. In the morning on Radonitsa, people in full families and one by one go to the cemeteries to clean up the graves of the dead, as well as leave Easter eggs, Easter cakes, kutya, pancakes and pies there for them. Traditionally, pregnant women and small children do not go to the cemetery even on this holiday.

The priests believe that it is not at all necessary to leave a commemoration at the grave. This is explained by the fact that such a relic of the pagan faith is long in the past. But people still honor this tradition.

The first Tuesday after Easter is called Radonitsa because Orthodox holidays continue, as does the joy in the hearts of Christians. The main thing for Radonitsa is to pray for relatives who have gone to God. You can also order a special service for each, light a candle for the peace of a person's soul. The rest of the measures taken in society are not regulated by the church.

Should you drink alcohol on Parent's Day?

Orthodox people cannot drink strong alcoholic beverages. But you can remember the dead with wine. In the holy biblical books, it is allowed to use wine for amusement. But it is forbidden to drink it in large quantities.

Leaving alcohol on the grave as a commemoration is also necessary at your discretion. But among the Christian eves of the Radonitsa there is nothing that would indicate the need for this action.

The cemetery is a sacred place where the bodies of the deceased await the Day of Judgment and Resurrection. Therefore, having come there, it is necessary to behave very quietly and tactfully.

So, how to properly spend Parent's Day, how to honor the memory of the deceased? For this, the following rules exist:

  • Cleaning of graves. The graves of the dead must be kept clean and tidy, since on the Day of the Great Resurrection they will become the place where all Christians will awaken from eternal sleep. In Radonitsa, weeds are removed from the graves, monuments are wiped, fences are painted, wreaths of artificial flowers are installed, candles are lit in special stands.
  • Prayers for the dead. Ordinary prayers for repose can be read not only by priests, but also by relatives of the dead.
  • Correct attitude. On Parent's Day, it is not advisable to indulge in unnecessary grief. After death, Christians are in a better world, and it is necessary to quietly rejoice for them.
  • A modest commemoration near the grave. There is no need to set lush tables near the graves, but it is quite possible to commemorate with wine and bread. According to ancient customs, you can leave some food for a deceased person near the grave, but this is not welcomed by the church. It is believed that prayers are all that the souls of Christians in the next world need.

In addition, quarrels, verbal skirmishes with distant relatives, as well as with other people, are unacceptable in the cemetery. No scandals should disturb the peace of the dead. All claims on this day should be forgotten. And the sacred duty of caring for the grave must be fulfilled.

If the fence on the grave requires minor repairs or painting, then this can be done on Parent's Day. The same applies to the headstone.

On Radonitsa, according to the canons, you need to have time to visit the church and the cemetery, and only then can the whole family gather to continue the holiday at home. Remembering the departed, you can tell stories from their lives, you can laugh and cry a little. It is also worth praying hard for the granting of the Kingdom of God to them.

In Christianity, there is an opinion that the poor are blessed in spirit. By distributing a commemoration, you can receive a blessing from them, as well as ask them to pray for your departed relatives. The more people remember your deceased relative, the better for them.

What to do if relatives are buried far away?

When a person lives too far from the graves of his ancestors, he may ask someone from his acquaintances living in his hometown to go to the grave of his deceased relatives.

If this is not possible, then you should confine yourself to a church service and ordering a memorial service. And at the first opportunity, within a year after Easter, go to the cemetery. Even in this situation, it is possible to pray for the deceased at home and remember them with the family.

Such prayers are sure to be heard, and the ancestors will receive their part of the respect even without actually going to their graves.

Now you know how to properly spend Parent's Day in order to fulfill your saint. There is a sign that it often rains on Radonitsa. This is explained by the fact that the souls of the dead are worried about such attention to them. To determine the weather for a trip to the cemetery in advance, you can look at the forecast, or you can remember what the weather was like on Palm Sunday. The weather is said to be the same these days. Good weather on Parent's Day portends a good year, while bad weather bodes well for difficulties and trials. But these are just signs and superstitions. Believe in them or not, it's up to you. It all depends on your personal worldview.

How to pray on memorial days.

For all forty days after the death of a person, his family and friends should read the Psalter. How many kathisma a day depends on the time and effort of the readers, but reading must be done daily. After reading the entire Psalter, it is read first. One should not just forget after each “Glory. ”Reading a prayer petition for the commemoration of the deceased (from“ Following on the departure of the soul from the body ”).

Many relatives and friends of the deceased, referring to various circumstances, entrust this reading to others (readers) for a fee or order it in monasteries (the so-called "indestructible Psalter"). Of course, God hears such a prayer. But it will be stronger, sincere, purer if a loved one or a loved one to the deceased person himself asks God for mercy on the deceased. And you shouldn't spare any effort or time for this.

On the third, ninth and fortieth days, a special kathisma should be read according to the deceased (it includes the 118th psalm). It is called the memorial, and in the liturgical books it is called “Immaculate” (according to the word found in its first verse: “Blessedness of the immaculate in the way, walking in the law of the Lord”).

After the kathisma, the prescribed troparia are read (they are immediately indicated after the 118th psalm in the prayer book), and after them - the 50th psalm and the troparia are blameless, or the troparia after the repose (number 8) with a refrain to each verse from the 118th psalm: “ Blessed art thou, Lord, teach me in Thy justification. "

After these troparion is read the canon "Following the departure of the soul from the body."

Remembrance of the deceased in the Church

It is necessary to remember the deceased in the Church as often as possible, not only on the designated special days of commemoration, but also on any other day. The main prayer for the repose of the departed Orthodox Christians is performed by the Church at the Divine Liturgy, bringing a bloodless sacrifice to God for them. To do this, before the beginning of the liturgy (or the night before), notes with their names should be submitted to the church (only baptized Orthodox Christians can be entered).

An eight-pointed Orthodox cross is usually placed at the top of the note. Then the type of commemoration is indicated - "On repose", after which the names of those commemorated in the genitive case are written in large, legible handwriting (to answer the question "who?") schemigumen Savva, archpriest Alexander, nun Rachel, Andrew, Nina).

All names must be given in church writing (for example, Tatiana, Alexia) and in full (Michael, Lyubov, not Misha, Lyuba).

The number of names in the note does not matter. During the funeral litany, you can take out your commemoration and pray for your loved ones. Prayer will be more effective if the one who commemorates himself on that day participates in the Body and Blood of Christ.

After the liturgy, you can serve a panikhida. The requiem is served before the eve - a special table with a crucifixion and rows of candlesticks. Here you can leave an offering for the needs of the temple in memory of the deceased loved ones.

It is very important after death to order a magpie in the church - a continuous commemoration during the liturgy for forty days. At the end of it, the magpie can be ordered again There are also long periods of commemoration - six months, a year. Some monasteries accept notes for eternal (while the monastery is standing) commemoration or for commemoration during the reading of the Psalter (such is an ancient Orthodox custom). The more temples prayer is offered, the better for our neighbor!

Prayer memory for the departed should not cool down at home. And home prayer is a saving tool for our deceased loved ones.

The prayers that we say at home are called the "cell rule". Thus, as it were, it is indicated that home prayers should not be disorderly, random, but have the form of a rule, i.e. must be drawn up according to a well-known rule, have a certain order and possible constancy.

The Church calls on her children to pray for the living and the dead every day. The main home prayer for the dead is a commemoration, it is in every prayer book. There are prayers for the dead in both the morning and evening canons.

If you want to add special prayers for the departed to the evening and morning rules, you should consult with the priest about this and, with his blessing, complete the home prayer rule for the dead.

Prayer for the dead is our main and invaluable help to those who have departed to another world.

The Church commands us to pray every day for deceased parents, relatives, known and benefactors. For this, the following short prayer for the departed is included in the number of daily morning prayers:

"Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed, Thy servant: my parents, relatives, benefactors (their names), and all Orthodox Christians, and forgive them all sins, voluntary and involuntary, and grant them the Kingdom of Heaven."

Prayers for the deaf

God of spirits and of all flesh, correcting death and abolishing the devil, and a life given to Thy world; Himself, Lord, rest the soul of Thy servant who has fallen asleep (Thy servant who has fallen asleep or Thy servant who have fallen asleep), [the name of the rivers], in a brighter place, in a dark place, in a place of peace, disease, sorrow and sighing are far from gone. Any sin committed by him (her or them), in word, or deed, or thought, as if God is good and loving man, forgive. Like a person is not, who will live and will not sin. Thou art alone without sin, Thy righteousness, Thy truth forever, and Thy word is truth.

Prayer for the departed Christian

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the belly of your eternal reposed servant, our brother (name), and like the Good and Humanitarian, forgiving sins, and consuming unrighteousness, weaken, forgive and forgive all his free and involuntary sins, deliver him eternal torment and fire of hell, and grant him the sacrament and pleasure of Thy eternal good, prepared for those who love Thee: if you sin, but do not depart from You, and it is unquestionable in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the God of Thee in the Trinity is glorified, faith, and One in the Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, orthodox even to the last gasp of confession. Even so, be merciful to that, and faith, even in Thee instead of deeds of imputation, and with Thy saints, as Abundant, rest: there is no man, who will live and not sin. But Thou art One besides all sin, and Thy righteousness, the truth forever, and Thou art the One God of mercies and mercy, and love of man, and we give glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever.

Prayer of the Monk Leo of Optina to the Lord for a parent who died without repentance

Seek, Lord, the lost soul of my father (name), and if possible, have mercy! Thy ways are inscrutable. Do not consider this my prayer as a sin. But Thy holy will be done.

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of eternal life, the deceased servant (s) of Thy (Thy) (name), and as a Good and Humanitarian, forgiving sins and iniquities, let go and forgive all his (her) free and involuntary sins, Deliver him (her) from eternal torment and the fire of hell, and grant him (her) the sacrament and enjoyment of Thy eternal blessings, prepared for those who love You: after all, although he sinned (a) he (a), he did not depart from You, and without a doubt in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, God in the Trinity, glorified, she believed, and the Trinity of Consubstantial Orthodox, even to her last breath, confessed.

Therefore, be merciful to him (her), and faith in You instead of deeds of imputation, and with Your saints, as the Generous, rest: for there is no person who lives and does not sin. But you are the only sinless, and your righteousness is eternal, and you are the only God of mercies and generosity and love for mankind, and we glorify you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the deceased after a long illness

God, Thou hast allowed that Thy servant (Thy servant) served You in the midst of suffering and sickness, thus participating in the Passion of Christ; We ask you to deserve his (her) participation in the glory of the Savior through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the repose of those who died after a serious and prolonged illness

Lord! Thou art righteous, and Thy judgment is righteous: Thou, in Thy eternal Wisdom, set the limit of our life, which no one can escape. Thy laws are wise, Thy ways are inscrutable! You command the angel of death to remove from the body the soul of a baby and an old man, a husband and a youth, from a healthy and sick person, according to Your indescribable and unknown destinies; but we believe that there is Your holy will for this, also, according to the judgment of Your righteousness, You, the Most Good Lord, as the wise and omnipotent and omniscient Physician of our souls and bodies - you send diseases and ailments, troubles and misfortunes to a person as spiritual healing.

You smite him and heal, you put to death in him the perishable and revive the immortal, and, like a child-loving Father, you punish: we pray to Thee, Human-loving Lord, accept Thy deceased servant (Thy servant) (name), whom Thou hast sought with Thy philanthropy, punished with a serious bodily illness in order to save the soul from spiritual death; and since all this was received from You by Your servant (Your) with humility, patience and love for You, as the unceasing Physician of our souls and bodies, now show him (her) your rich mercy, as one who endured (s) all this for their sins.

Lord, charge him (her) with this temporary serious illness as a kind of punishment for the sins committed on this earth, and heal his (her) soul from sinful ailments.

Have mercy, Lord, have mercy on the one who was sought by you, and, punished (s) temporarily slave (slave) (name), I pray to you, do not punish with the deprivation of your eternal heavenly goods, but deign him (her) to enjoy them in your kingdom ...

If the deceased slave (s), Thy (I), did not reason (a) for the sake of which he deserved to endure such an illness, which was the touch of Thy healing and providential Right hand, obstinately thought (a) or, out of his foolishness, murmured (a) in his heart, since he thought such a burden (a) unbearable, or due to the weakness of his nature, weakened by a long illness, he was upset (was) such a misfortune, we pray Thee, Long-Suffering and Most Merciful Lord, forgive him (her) these sins according to Thy boundless mercy and Thy endless mercy towards us sinful and unworthy Thy servants, forgive for the sake of Thy love for the human race; if his (her) iniquities were beyond all limits, and illness and ailments did not move her to full and sincere repentance, we beg You, the Head of our life, we beg Your redemptive merits, have mercy and save, Savior, Your servant (s) (yu) (name) from eternal death. Lord God, our Savior!

You, by faith in You, granted us forgiveness and remission of sins, granting mercy and healing to a 38-year-old paralyzed man, when You said: “Your sins are forgiven you”; with the same faith and hope in Your goodness, we resort to Yours, O Most Blessed Jesus, inexpressible mercy and in our heart tenderness we pray You, Lord: remember now and today this word of mercy, give the word of remission of sins to the deceased (s), ever remembered ( -oh) us to Thy servant (Thy) (name), may heal spiritually, and may he dwell in a bright place, in a place of the deceased, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no groan, and may his illnesses and ailments be reckoned there (her), tears of suffering and sorrow into a source of joy in the Spirit. Amen.

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! In contrition and tenderness of my heart, I pray to You: rest, O Lord, the soul of Your deceased servant (name), in Your Heavenly Kingdom. Master Almighty! You have blessed the conjugal union of a husband and wife, always declaring: it is not good for a single person to be, let us make him an assistant for him. Thou art sanctified this union in the image of the spiritual union of Christ with the Church. I believe, O Lord, and I confess that you have blessed me to combine this holy union with one of Your servants. By your good and wise will, please, take away from me this servant of yours, you have already given me, like a helper and companion of my life. I bow before this by Your will, and I pray to You with all my heart, accept my prayer for Your servant (name), and forgive her if you sin in word, deed, thought, knowledge and ignorance; if you love the earthly more than the heavenly; Even more about the clothing and adornment of your body, than about the enlightenment of the garment of your soul; or even if he is negligent about his children; if you grieve anyone with word or deed; If you pound in your heart against your neighbor, or condemn someone or otherwise that you have done evil from such.

Forgive her for all this, as a kind and benevolent man: as if there is no man, whoever will live and will not sin. Do not enter into judgment with Thy servant, like Thy creation, do not condemn her for eternal torment by her sin, but spare and have mercy according to Thy great mercy. I pray and ask Thee, Lord, grant me strength throughout all the days of my life, without ceasing to pray for Thy slave who has departed, and even until the end of my belly, ask her from Thee, Judge of the whole world, for the abandonment of her sins. Yes, as you, O God, put on her head a crown of an honest stone, crowning her here on earth; so crown Thy eternal glory in Thy Heavenly Kingdom, with all the saints who rejoice there, and together with them forever sing Thy all-holy name with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! You are crying consolation, orphans and widows of intercession. You advertise: call on Me in the day of your sorrow, and I will destroy you. In the days of my sorrow, I run to You and I pray to You: do not turn your face away from me and hear my prayer, brought to You with tears. Thou, Lord, the Lord of all, was pleased to combine me with one of Thy servants, in his hedgehog we are one body and one spirit; You gave me this slave, like a roommate and protector. By your good and wise will, please, take your servant from me and leave me alone. I bow before this by Thy will, and I run to You in the days of my sorrow: quench my sorrow about separation from Thy servant, my friend. If you have taken him away from me, do not take away from me your mercy. As if you once accepted two mites as a widow, so accept this prayer of mine. Remember, O Lord, the soul of Your deceased servant (name), forgive him all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, if in word, if in deed, if knowledge and ignorance, do not destroy him with his iniquities and do not betray him to eternal torment, but by your great mercy and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, weaken and forgive all his sins and bring him to Thy saints, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life. I pray and ask Thee, Lord, grant me throughout all the days of my life not to cease to pray for Thy slave who has departed, and even before my exodus I ask Thee, Judge of the whole world, for the abandonment of all his sins and his resettlement into the Heavenly abodes, you have prepared for those who love Ty. As if you have sinned, but do not depart from You, and it is beyond doubt that the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are Orthodox even before their last breath of confession; by the same his faith, even in Thee, instead of deeds to him: as if there is a man, who will live and will not sin, You are one but sin, and Your truth is truth forever. I believe, O Lord, and I confess that you hear my prayer and do not turn your face away from me. Seeing the widow, I cry wickedly, having mercy, her son, to be buried, you raised you: so having mercy, calm down my grief. For you have opened the doors of Your mercy to Your servant Theophilus, who has departed to You, and you have forgiven him for his sins through the prayers of Your Holy Church, listening to the prayers and alms of his wife: sit and I pray to You, accept my prayer for your servant eternal life. For Thou art our hope. Thou art God, the hedgehog to be merciful and save, and we glorify Thee with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Parents' Prayer for Dead Children

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, Lord of life and death, Comforter of the mourning! With a contrite and tender heart I run to You and pray to Ty: remember. Lord, in Thy Kingdom, Thy deceased servant (thy servant), my child (name), and make him (her) an eternal memory. You, the Lord of life and death, have given me this child. By your good and wise will, please, take it away from me. Blessed be Thy name, Lord. I pray to Thee, Judge of heaven and earth, with Thy endless love for us, sinners, forgive my deceased child for all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word, even in deed, also in knowledge and ignorance. Forgive me, Merciful, and our parental sins, may they not abide on our children: we have, as if we sinned many times before You, did not observe many, did not create, as if you commanded us. If our deceased child, ours or ours for the sake of guilt, is in this life, working for the world and for his flesh, and not more for Thee, Lord and his God: if you love the delights of this world, and not even more Your Word and Your commandments, if you have surrendered with the sweetness of everyday life, and not more than regret for his sins, and in intemperance, vigilance, fasting and prayer before oblivion - I pray to Thee earnestly, forgive, blessed Father, my child all such sins of his, forgive and weaken, if you do something else evil in this life ... Christ Jesus! Thou art raised the daughter of Jairus by the faith and prayer of her father. Thou art healed the daughter of a Canaanite wife by faith and the request of her mother: hear my mother and my prayer, do not despise my prayer for my child. Forgive, Lord, forgive all his sins and, having forgiven and purifying his soul, take out eternal torment and instill with all Your saints, who have pleased You from time immemorial, where there is no illness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life: as if there is no man, like He will live and will not sin, but You are the only one besides all sin: yes, whenever you judge the world, my child will hear Your glorified voice: come, blessed of My Father, and inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the folding of the world. For you are the Father of mercies and bounties. Thou art our life and our resurrection, and we glorify Thee with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen

Parents' Prayer for Dead Children

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, the Lord of life and death, the Comforter of the afflicted! With a contrite and tender heart, I run to You and pray to You: remember, Lord, in Your Kingdom your deceased servant, my child (name) and make him an eternal memory. You, the Lord of life and death, have given me this child, and by Your good and wise will you have deigned to take him away from me. Blessed be Thy name, Lord.

I pray to Thee, Judge of heaven and earth: for Thy endless love for us, sinners, forgive my departed child for all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, committed consciously and out of ignorance. Forgive me, Merciful, and our parental sins, may they not abide on our children, for I know that they have sinned much before You, did not observe much and did not do what You commanded us.

If, however, our successful child, through his own or through our fault, during his life worked more for the world and his flesh than for Thee, Lord and his God; if he loved the deceptions of this world more than thy word and thy commandments; if you indulged in the pleasures of life, and not regret about your sins and in intemperance forgot vigilance, fasting and prayer - I pray you earnestly, forgive, good Father, my child all these sins of his, forgive and let go, if he did anything other evil in life his.

Oh Jesus Christ! You raised the daughter of Jairus by faith and the prayer of her father, You healed the daughter of a Canaanite wife by faith and the request of her mother, hear my prayer, do not reject my prayer for my child.

Forgive, Lord, forgive all his sins, and, having forgiven and purifying his soul, deliver from eternal torment and settle with all Your saints, who have pleased You from time immemorial, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no groans, but endless life! For there is no person who has not sinned during his lifetime, and only You are the One sinless! May my child at the Last Judgment hear Your predestined voice: "Come, blessed of My Father, and inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world." For Thou art the Father of mercies and mercies, Thou art our life and resurrection, and we send glory to Thee with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

Mother's prayer (at home) for the stillborn and unbaptized children of the Monk Arseny of Athos

Lord, have mercy on my children who have died in my womb! For my faith and my tears according to Thy mercy, O Lord, do not deprive them of Thy Divine light!

Prayer of Children for Deceased Parents

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos for the dead

Most Holy Lady Theotokos! We cry to You, our Intercessor, for You are our ambulance and an unceasing intercessor before God! We especially pray to You at this hour: help the deceased servant of God (deceased servant of God) (name), tormented (s) in hell; We pray to Thee, Lady of the world, by Thy power drive away from the fear-driven soul of his (her) terrible dark spirits, so that they will be confused and put to shame before You; free him (her) from torture in hell.

We pray to Thee, Most Holy Theotokos, protect him (her) with thy honest robe, pray for the sinful servant of God (sinful servant of God) (name) that God weaken his (her) torment and bring him out of the abyss of hell, so that he (she) will pass from hell to heaven. We pray to Thee, our Intercessor, intercede for the servant (s) of God (s) (name) with thy mother's boldness with the Lord; We pray to You, our Helper, help him (her) to justify himself before God, the Creator of heaven and earth, and pray to Your Only Begotten Son, our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, that he may rest the deceased in the bosom of Abraham with the righteous and all saints. Amen.

Prayer for the Suddenly Deceased

Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of life and death, You said in Your holy Gospel: "Watch, because you do not know at what hour your Lord will come, for at what time you do not think the Son of Man will come." But we, earthly and sinful, who have surrendered to the sorrows and pleasures of life, forget about the hour of our death, and therefore we are called to You, Judge of heaven and earth, suddenly, at an hour when we did not expect and did not anticipate.

So suddenly your deceased servant, our brother (name), was called to You.

Inscrutable and incomprehensible are the ways of your wondrous providence for us, Lord Savior! I humbly bow my head before these Your paths, Lord Vladyka, and I pray to You earnestly with faith: look down from the height of Your holy dwelling and your overshadowing me with Your grace, may this prayer be directed before You, like fragrant incense.

Merciful Lord, hear my prayer for Thy servant (name), according to Thy inscrutable fate, suddenly abducted from us by death; have mercy and have mercy on his trembling soul, called to your impartial judgment at an hour at which you did not expect.

Yes, do not denounce her with Your fury, and do not punish her with Your anger, but spare and have mercy on her for the sake of Your sufferings on the Cross and through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother and all Your saints, forgive her all sins, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, knowledge and ignorance. After all, although Your servant (name) was raptured, in his life he believed in You and confessed You, God and the Savior of the world of Christ, and had hope in You: credit him with this faith and his hope instead of deeds!

Merciful Lord! You do not wish the death of the sinner, but you mercifully accept from him and for him everything that is done to conversion and salvation, and you yourself arrange his way for his salvation.

I also pray to You, be pleased to remember all the deeds of mercy and all the prayers done here on earth for Your deceased servant, deign to accept my prayer for him along with the prayers of your priests of Your Holy Church and deign to release all sins to his soul, calm his troubled heart, spare him from eternal torment and rest him in a bright place.

For you have mercy and save us, Christ our Savior, and you alone are entitled to unspeakable goodness and eternal glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the dead without repentance to the Monk Paisius the Great

O holy head, reverend father, blessed Paisios! Do not forget your unfortunate ones to the end, and remember us always in your holy and auspicious prayers to God!

Remember your flock, which you have saved, and do not forget to visit your children. Pray for us, holy father, for your spiritual children, as one who has boldness towards the Heavenly King; pray for us incessantly before the Lord and do not reject us, who honor you with faith and love.

Remember us unworthy at the Throne of the Almighty and do not stop praying for us to Christ God, for you have been given grace to pray for us.

For we do not think of you as dead: if you have passed away from us in body, then after death you remain alive. Do not depart from us in spirit, keeping us from enemy arrows and all demonic deceptions and the wiles of the devil, our good shepherd.

For the cancer with your relics is always visible before our eyes, but your holy soul with the hosts of Angels, with ethereal faces, with Heavenly forces, standing at the Almighty Throne, rejoices with dignity.

Knowing truly that after death you remain alive, we fall down and pray to you: pray for us to the Almighty God, for the benefit of our souls, and ask for time for us to repent, so we can freely move from earth to heaven, and let us get rid of bitter ordeals, demons and princes of the air and from eternal torment. And may we be heirs of the Heavenly Kingdom with all the righteous, who have pleased our God Jesus Christ from time immemorial, to whom all glory, honor and worship befits, with His Beginning Father and with His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving His Spirit, now and forever and forever. Amen.

The venerable Optina elders sometimes allowed at home prayer to commemorate suicides, for whom, according to the 14th Canon of Timothy of Alexandria, there could be no offering in the Church. Thus, the Monk Leonidas, in schema Leo, to one of his disciples (Pavel Tambovtsev), whose father ended his life by suicide, gave such instructions on prayer: “Entrust both yourself and the fate of a parent to the will of the Lord, all-wise, all-powerful. Do not test the fate of the Most High. Strive with humility to strengthen yourself within the limits of moderate sorrow. Pray to the all-good Creator, thus fulfilling the duty of love and filial duties. - in the spirit of the virtuous and wise, so: “Seek, O Lord, the lost soul of my father: if it is possible there is, have mercy. Your fates are invisible. Do not make this my prayer a sin, but Thy holy will be done. " Pray then simply, without testing, betraying your heart into the right hand of the Most High. Of course, there was no will of God for such a grievous death of your parent: but now it is completely in the will of the Mighty One to cast both soul and body into a cave of fire, which both humbles and raises, dies and lives, brings down to hell and raises. At the same time, He is so merciful, omnipotent and loving that the good qualities of all earthly ones are nothing before His highest goodness. For this, you should not be overly sad. You will say: "I love my parent, which is why I grieve inconsolably." Fair enough. But God without comparison is more than you. loved and loves him. It means that you have to leave the eternal fate of your parent to the goodness and mercy of God, who, if he deigns to have mercy, then who can resist Him? "

Prayer for the unbaptized departed to the martyr Uaru

Oh, holy martyr Uar, worthy of special surprise, you aspired to imitate the Lord Christ, you confessed the Heavenly King before the tormentor, and for Him you voluntarily suffered.

And now the Church honors you as glorified by the Lord Christ with the glory of Heaven, Who has given you the grace of great boldness towards Him.

And now, standing before Him with the Angels, triumphant in the world above, contemplating the Holy Trinity and enjoying the Light of the Beginning Radiance, remember the sufferings of our relatives who died in wickedness, accept our petition, and as the faithless family of Cleopatra with your prayers freed from eternal torment, so remember and the ungodly buried, who died unbaptized, hasten to ask them for relief from eternal torment, and with one mouth and one heart let us glorify the Most Merciful Creator forever and ever. Amen.

Reading the Psalter for the dead

Reading the Psalter in memory of the departed brings them greater consolation, because this reading is accepted by the Lord Himself as a pleasant atoning sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those remembered. “Psalter. for the whole world prays to God, ”writes St. Basil the Great.

There is a practice of reading one 17th kathisma, this practice is used when there is a lack of time.

Reading the Psalter is a prayer to the Lord. The ascetics of the Church recommend that the believer read the Psalter one Kathisma every day, paying attention to the fact that piety and purity of heart are an indispensable condition for reading.
