How to teach to learn
It is very important to hear the correct pronunciation of English words, because as you hear a word, you will remember it. In order for the words to be well remembered, it is imperative to use them in practice. For a start, it was a good idea to make phrases from words that match each other in meaning, for example, every day, go home. Sometimes basic English words are easier to remember if you come up with some funny or ridiculous phrase with them, for example - We never use money or I often see beautiful green people... The more various combinations of the available words you manage to come up with, the better the words will be remembered, since in this case not only visual and auditory memory is involved, but also associative thinking. Another way for easier memorization of words is grouping according to a certain characteristic. In the noun section, we've already done that for you. Try this method for other parts of speech. For example, adjectives can be taught in pairs with the opposite meaning - good - bad etc. In the existing adverbs, the group also clearly stands out - Today - Tomorrow - Yesterday ... After carefully studying the list of English words, you can create groups for yourself that will be convenient for you.
So, now you have the necessary vocabulary for beginners at your disposal, the English language has become one step closer and more understandable.
Your task is to learn them, memorize the correct pronunciation and practice as often as possible, combining them with each other in different variations. After you are sure that all the words have firmly settled in your memory, you can move on to the next level - to increase your vocabulary with easy texts and stories.

This theme includes the translation of phrases with which you can comfortably spend time in a restaurant without feeling any language barrier.
Numbers and numbers are a very important and frequently used topic. Without knowing how to pronounce numbers and numbers in English, you will not be able to pay for purchases, find out the schedule of certain events, and so on. This theme fixes a similar problem.
Of course, the basis of the language system is grammar, but without a developed lexical base, knowledge of grammatical norms is unlikely to be useful to a beginner anywhere. Therefore, we will devote today's lesson to replenishment of vocabulary and mastering techniques for quickly memorizing new vocabulary. There will be quite a lot of expressions in the material, so we recommend in advance to divide these English words for study for every day, working through 2-3 dozen new phrases and be sure to repeat the examples already studied. Before moving on to practice, let's find out how it is recommended to learn foreign words correctly.
Learning vocabulary is half the battle, it is also important to try to use it constantly, otherwise it will simply be forgotten. Therefore, the main principle of learning English words is not to strive to memorize absolutely all the words you encounter. In modern English, there are about 1.5 million words and stable combinations. Learning everything is simply unrealistic, so try to choose only the most used and necessary vocabulary for you personally.
Suppose you have already decided on your area of interest, picked up the necessary lexical material and began to learn it. But the matter does not move from a dead center: words are slowly memorized and quickly forgotten, and each lesson turns into an unimaginable boredom and painful struggle with oneself. Here are some tips to help you create the right learning environment and learn a foreign language easily and effectively.
- Combine words by meaning by creating thematic dictionaries: animals, pronouns, action verbs, communication in a restaurant, etc.... Generalized groups are easier to store in memory, forming a kind of associative block.
- Try different ways to learn words until you find the one that works best for you. These can be popular cards, and interactive online simulators, and stickers pasted on various objects in the house, and applications for tablets and phones. If you better perceive information visually and by ear, then actively use educational video and audio recordings. You can study in any way, the main thing is that the learning process is a pleasant pastime, and not a boring duty.
- Memorize immediately how the word is pronounced. To do this, you must either turn to transcription, or use interactive resources. The program for learning the pronunciation of English words will not only help you remember the sound of an expression, but also check how correctly you pronounce it.
- Don't leave out the words you've already learned. This is a very important point. It seems to us that if we learn words for a long time, then we memorize them once and for all. But memory tends to delete unclaimed information. Therefore, if you do not have constant speaking practice, replace it with regular repetitions. You can create your own day pad with alternating repetitions, or use one of the online English learning apps.
Other English topics: Phrases in English for communicating with foreigners on any topic
After working through these tips, let's do a little practice. We bring to the attention of learners of the most popular vocabulary of the English language. These English words are suitable for every day study, as they are divided into several tables and presented in the form of small semantic groups. So, let's start replenishing our vocabulary.

Want to learn how to learn English words quickly and easily? We will tell you how many words you need to know, where to get them from, what tools to use and how to learn all this in general. Use at least a few tips and you can expand your vocabulary.
All students are interested in the question: "How to learn English words?" The more vocabulary we know, the better we understand what the heroes of our favorite English films are talking about, what is written on the Tate Modern museum plates and how much profitable terms deals are offered by our partners from the USA. Today we will give you a few tips to help you learn new vocabulary effectively.
How many English words do you need to know
We recommend that you take the Online English Vocabulary Size Test (immediately click on the Start button) or Test Your Vocab to check your vocabulary. It will show your approximate vocabulary, which you can compare with the average scores of native speakers and English learners. On average, 3,000 - 4,000 words will be enough to communicate on most topics.
However, we want to warn you: do not rely entirely on the test results. It can only give a rough estimate of your vocabulary.
2. Special textbooks
Vocabulary textbooks will help you learn new words and phrases in which they are used. The great thing about the manuals is that they provide lists of words along with examples of their use, so the words learn in context. We have provided a detailed guide to help you choose the best guide.
3. Lists or dictionaries of high-frequency words
How do you know if it's worth memorizing the next new English word that you have met? It may have become obsolete or rarely used. You can refer to the lists of words that are most commonly used by native speakers. We recommend you lists from the Oxford Dictionary - The Oxford 3000 British Dictionary and The Oxford 3000 American Dictionary. These are the 3000 most significant words any English learner should know. They have been carefully selected by linguists and experienced teachers. You can recognize these words in the Oxford dictionary itself by the key icon.
Tools for memorizing new words
1. Cards with words
This trick may sound old-fashioned, but it is still effective. All students at least once in their lives started cards and tried to learn new vocabulary from them. It is convenient and affordable: no need to spend money, because you write it yourself, and you can take the cards with you wherever you go.
Before making cards, you need to help:
- pick up a translation;
- familiarize yourself with the typical word combinations in which the word is used;
- explore examples.
Then it is worth deciding whether you will make paper vocabulary cards or electronic ones.
- On one side of the leaflet we write the word in English, on the other - in Russian. We check our knowledge: we translate a word from Russian into English and vice versa.
- On the one hand, we write the word in English and glue the picture, on the other, the translation into Russian. This method works well for people with associative thinking. In your mind, you link a new English-language concept and the object that it stands for.
- On the one hand, we write a word in English with a Russian context, on the other hand, a word in Russian without context. When repeating vocabulary, try to translate the concept from Russian into English. And with the translation in the opposite direction, the second side of the card with the Russian context will help you.
- More experienced students are advised to use English-English dictionaries, for example Macmillan Dictionary. On one side we write the word in English, on the other - its definition in English. You can also write synonyms and antonyms of the concept under study.
- How to learn vocabulary correctly? Memorizing English words is best in context. Therefore, you can write on the card not just a word, but the sentence in which it is used. Sample sentences can be found in electronic dictionaries such as ABBYY Lingvo.
Electronic cards
If you find it difficult to tear yourself away from the computer, use your affection for the good: create virtual stickers with words on your desktop and in a few days you will remember them well.
To create electronic vocabulary cards, we recommend the Quizlet service, which allows you to memorize words in different ways: choose the correct translation from four suggested ones, fill in the gaps in sentences and play word games. Here you can track your progress: which words are harder for you than others, how quickly you learn new vocabulary. There is an application for and iOS. An alternative resource is Memrise. Its free version has limited functionality, but it will be enough for making cards.
You need to constantly work with cards: review and repeat the learned vocabulary. Change the cards periodically to new ones, and after 1-2 weeks, return the old ones to repeat the words.
2. Notepad dictionary
This method is good for those who constantly lose something: your cards are unlikely to last long :-)
You can structure your notebook however you like. Let's give our version. Each page must correspond to a specific day. At the top, write the dates of the words repeating. In order for the studied vocabulary to be well fixed in memory, do not forget to train it. To do this, use the techniques described by us in the article "".
3. Mind map
You can easily learn English words on the same subject if you draw a mind map (a mind map). Such a diagram clearly shows which topic the words relate to. And while you draw it, the vocabulary will be stored in your memory. The mind map might look like this:
4. Learning sites and applications
On the way to work on the subway or in line at the clinic, use any free minute to learn new words. You will find useful programs for your gadget in the article "".
It is enough to practice 10-20 minutes daily to feel the progress.
1. Combine words by topic
How easy is it to memorize English words? Groups of words related to the same topic are usually well remembered. Therefore, try to break words into groups of 5-10 words and learn them.
There is the so-called Restorff effect, according to which the human brain from a group of objects best remembers the most prominent. Use this effect to your advantage: in a group of words of one subject "introduce a stranger" - write a word from a completely different subject. For example, when studying words on the topic “Fruit”, add one word from the topic “Transport” to them, this way your activities will become even more effective.
2. Use associations and personalization
This method is loved by many students: in order to learn a word, you need to come up with an association in Russian. For example, you need to remember the word obstinacy. Break it down into three syllables: ob-stin-acy, you get "stubborn as a wall-ass." The word shoot can be remembered as "the jester shoots." You can make up convenient associations yourself, the main thing is that they are understandable to you and easy to remember. This will make it easier for you to build up your English vocabulary.
Learning will be effective if you not only form a verbal association, but also visualize it: while pronouncing the word shoot, imagine this shooting jester, let the image turn out to be as funny and memorable as possible. Even better - a dynamic picture with your personal presence: you imagine how a jester next to you shoots at someone (with a water pistol, so that the spectacle turns out to be comical, not tragic). The more vivid the picture is, the easier it will be to remember the word.
3. Use learned vocabulary in speech
How to learn English words correctly and not forget them? Are you familiar with the use it or lose it principle? In order for knowledge to remain in memory, you need to actively "use" it. It is good practice to compose short stories using new words. Best of all, the vocabulary is remembered in a short funny text, which is written about yourself, beloved or dear things.
If you take a course or study with an English teacher, try to insert new words into the conversation as often as possible: the more times you say a word, the better you remember it. Don't forget about spelling: try to use new words in writing.
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
Tell me and I will forget. Teach me and I will remember. Make me do it and I will learn.
Learn new words and apply them immediately with help.
4. Test your knowledge regularly
It is useful from time to time to take various tests to determine the level of vocabulary. For example, great picture tests (a joy for visuals and kids) are on the Vocabulary for learners of English page. After passing such a test, you will immediately see what is stored in your memory and which topics or words need to be repeated.
5. Follow your daily plan
7. Develop your memory
It is impossible to remember anything if you do not have a good memory. Learning a language in and of itself trains our brains well and improves memory. But for easier memorization, you can use the tips from our article "".
8. Consider your type of information perception
Not all methods are created equal for you. Don't try to apply everything at once. Try text, video, or audio formats and choose the ones that make you pick up new words faster. This will lead you to your own custom mix of techniques.
The main thing is to remember to move from theory to practice. Not only read helpful tips on how to memorize English words quickly and easily, but also actively use them in Everyday life, then you do not have to puzzle over how to improve your level of knowledge.
Do you think cards and notebooks with the words "yesterday"? Then try to learn vocabulary from the latest British teaching materials in our school's online English courses. Our students learn words and phrases in context, use them in a live dialogue with the teacher, memorize new vocabulary easily and quickly. !
Now they teach English from an early age. First of all, you need to be able to read words. In addition, dads and moms do not know which words are more important, which are less. I studied 11 languages, so I know the approximate importance of any word. In this post, the most useful ones: what are the names of the animals, berries, items of clothing - I don’t have all of this, but it’s full of books for children. Because it is very easy to show a household item and name it. And the fact that this will have almost no practical application - the creators of textbooks do not care. But it worries parents. If there are any important questions by language, ready to answer in the comments.
