Not the easiest part to take. Of course, many people immediately think that there is nothing difficult in hearing a couple of phrases, finding the same in the answers, and - voila - you are the happy owner of all possible test scores.

You think so?

Then I hasten to disappoint you! If you don’t know the strategy for doing this part, you’re out of luck. The key to success here is good listening comprehension and prior preparation. Therefore, today we will understand from the first to the last word of the test. I will tell you about possible strategies to help you do better on the test.

  • Don't waste time reading the condition. If you have practiced enough, then instead of the announcer you can recite them by heart. Use this time wisely: read the answer choices that are given to you.
  • Remember that you will not hear the exact words in the recording. This is a test of your understanding of the language, so I assure you - there will be enough synonyms and sentences created to confuse you.
  • Expand your vocabulary. This will probably not be superfluous, given how many synonyms and words "on the topic" will be.

Exercise 1 - pick up the answer options.

In the first test, you are given options such as in a shop, in a park, in a hotel etc. Your task is to correlate the dialogue that you will hear and the option that lies before your eyes.

Be careful! Remember what I said - do not "lead" to individual words, but listen attentively to the general meaning of the dialogue. For example, in the first conversation we hear a lot of words associated with dogs: dog, puppy etc. And the obvious "instant" answer would be in a vet shop... But if you listen to the whole dialogue, you can understand that it was not about treatment, but about buying a book.

This is how you should listen carefully to every conversation, because it is so easy to make a mistake. Take enough time to practice. In 2017, in the exam, as in all listening, nothing has changed.

Assignment 2 - find the appropriate expression.

I can say that it will be quite easy for a 9th grade graduate to cope with the first task. But with the exercises of the second task - a little more difficult. My advice is - as soon as you are sure of the answers to the first test, go straight to the second. Skip 20 seconds of checking your answers and another 30 seconds of announcing a new test.

Here the answer options will be longer - after all, these are expressions. Underline the keywords that you will focus on during the exercise. For example:

The speaker talks about his / her after-class activities.

The speaker talks about his / her school classroom.

Highlight them on your paper and focus directly on them. It is very important here — even more important than the previous one — to hear synonyms and possible words that might be used with those keywords.

For example:

After-class activities: swimming class, we go to the gym, after school.

School classroom: white board, desks, teacher’s table.

All dialogues here are connected by one theme. In addition, to just listen to the recordings, check them against the answers and think about how to make your listening better, learn vocabulary. This is important, my dears.

Assignment 3 - dialogue.

This is perhaps the most difficult stage. You will be faced with one dialogue, but the answer options and questions will be divided into 6 separate points. It will be quite difficult for an unprepared student to grab everything at once.

The strategy does not change here: immediately, without listening to the ad, start reading the questions and underlining keywords. Try to memorize as much as possible, or at least navigate the questions with your eyes.

If you need textbooks to prepare for all parts of the exam, buy them here:

What makes me happy is that all questions are in the same order as in the recording. But the questions are not defined separately, so in order to understand that it is time to move on to the next question, you need to understand that the previous answer has already been received.

And finally ...

Do not be afraid of the first mistakes when doing these exercises. At the beginning of your exam preparation, you are still a beginner, and if you have enough time, you will be fine. Exercise a lot, practice constantly, and everything will go well. You can download the simulator to train even more.

Remember, my dears, that your success depends on the practice of your knowledge. Do them together with my help and with the help of my blog. I assure you, you will find many interesting and useful things.

Until then, I say goodbye to you.

Happy preparation, my dears.

This book continues a new series of study guides for preparing for the Unified State Exam in English. The book offers five complete versions of the exam in the USE format.
The topics, problems, language and speech content of the test items were selected in full accordance with the USE codifier.
It is advisable to perform the proposed test options in real time on the USE, including filling out the answer forms, since often the success of the exam depends not only on the correctness of the assignments, but also on how accurately the answers are transferred to the answer form.
The materials of the manual can be used in the classroom under the guidance of a teacher, as well as in the course of independent preparation for the exam. The proposed tasks allow you to check and assess the level of readiness for the exam, to determine the strengths and weaknesses of your training.
If in the course of completing any tasks you encounter difficulties, then you can refer to other books in this series. In them you can find tips on the formation of STRATEGIES for completing each of the types of exam tasks of the exam (see sections "Training tasks for different parts of the exam", where there is information about the structure of each part of the examination work, the purpose of each task in this section, and most importantly - advice for their optimal implementation). These tips can be viewed as an algorithm that will help you avoid wasting time on the exam, increase your awareness of actions and focus on the key points of each assignment. It is advisable to perform these tasks based on the step-by-step recommendations of the proposed algorithm: remember what needs to be done before starting to work directly with the task, how to effectively complete the task and how to independently check its implementation. On this page you can check your the answers to listening tasks from the Demo version of the USE 2017, posted on the FIPI website. You can also familiarize yourself with the texts of audio recordings for Section 1 of the Unified State Examination in English.

Why do you need to work with texts

I believe that working with listening texts is a very important element in preparing for a successful exam, as you significantly increase your vocabulary by learning new words, colloquial cliches and phrasal verbs from these texts. Be sure to speak behind the announcer those places that caused you the most difficulties during the first auditions. This regular work will definitely increase your chances of success on the exam!

Step-by-step instruction

Listen to the audio file, as expected on the exam 2 times and mark the expected answers

Compare your answers with the suggested options in CMMs (and don't be discouraged if you didn't succeed!)

Listen to the audio file with reference to the text, underlining those phrases in the text that contain information to help you choose the correct answer

Pay attention to synonymous pairs of words and phrases found in the audio recording and in the assignment

Learn the maximum possible (required) number of words from each task (pronunciation + spelling)

Listening texts

Exercise 1

A – F 1–7 just one time. The assignment has one extra statement. You will hear the recording twice. Enter your answersto the table. You have 20 seconds ,

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A

I am not much of a cinema goer but I do enjoy a good film. I usually buy a film online and watch it at home. I've got a wide screen TV and a projector... Sometimes, if I am in the mood, I use it. You feel as if you were in the cinema but I find it a bit cozier on my sofa. It’s also a lot cheaper to watch films at home. If I invite some friends, they bring popcorn and drinks and then you really can "t tell the difference.

Speaker B

The cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an actress. I would watch all the new musicals and children’s films and dream of playing the leading parts. When I was in my last year at school, I took acting classes to prepare for the New York Theater and Cinema Academy. After graduating, I auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the happiest moment of my life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!

Speaker C

Books are much more fun than films. I know most film directors want to make a film out of some classical book but so often the film versions don’t turn out well. At least to my taste. When you watch a film you are forced to believe what you see and when you read a book, you can imagine the characters and have your own personal experience with the plot. Watching a film just doesn’t trigger your imagination the way reading does.

Speaker D

I can’t remember the last time I was at the movies. I think it was the day I broke my arm. Crazy as it may be, I broke my arm going to see a new film. My girlfriend had asked me to go to the cinema with her, so I bought the tickets for Friday night. We were meeting inside the Star Cinema. It’d been raining hard and the pavement was very wet. I was five minutes late for my date, so I hurried up the stairs and slipped. The last thing I remembered was the terrible pain in my arm.

Speaker E

I never miss a new film... I have a notification sent from the local cinema to inform me about any change in their shows. They change the schedule once every two weeks, so I go to the cinema every other week. Our local cinema is rather small, so they show two or three films at a time. Sometimes I watch a film every day for three days in a row to see all that’s new in the market... It does get expensive sometimes, but it's worth it, the way I see it.

Speaker F

The theater has more of an appeal to me than the cinema. I would go to see a play more often if they had more theaters around where I live. Local theater companies have only two shows a year and that doesn’t satisfy my appetite, so I travel to London to see different shows may be once a month or so. Seeing real three-dimensional people on stage is a lot more interesting than watching them on the screen. I love watching actors ’facial expressions and the interaction between them.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)
