When it comes to the parapet, many wonder what it is and why it is needed?

The main function of the parapet is to protect the roof, foundation, walls, window openings, fences from various environmental influences. It helps to hide all the flaws of the roof, is able to set the whole building a certain style.

Despite the fact that the parapet helps not only protect the structure, but also gives it a special style, there are certain requirements, the fulfillment of which is mandatory during the construction of the building.

The essence of the concept

So what is a parapet? The parapet is a low wall located on the edge of the roof, terrace, balcony and so on. Basically, such a fence is solid, made of metal.

The shape of the parapet can be completely different, for example, straight, angular, arched, rounded.  There are also various surface treatments, such as matt, polished, sand, lined ceramic tiles  and brushing.

When choosing the form and material of the fence, it is important to proceed from the appearance of the building in order to preserve the style of construction.

Application

The parapet is used both on flat and pitched roofs. This type of fencing is installed in places where there is the possibility of people staying. It is used both as a safety, protection from natural phenomena, and has a certain decorative function.

The height of the parapet should not exceed 45 centimeters, and in some cases 120 centimeters according to building codes. Quite often, a special apron is installed on top of the fence, which should protect the structure from possible damage.

Please note that parapets are used both for the purpose of protecting the building from wind, rain and other natural phenomena, and for the purpose of masking uneven roofs or hiding air conditioning units and other systems.

Installation Features

Installation of the parapet is a very important part of the construction, which has a huge number of different nuances.

The main feature of the installation of the parapet is the installation of the node, that is, the part of the structure that is adjacent to the wall of the building.

It's important to know:  do not trust lovers or people without specific experience, installation of the parapet, it is better to turn to professionals for help.

Recently, quite often, a similar design plan has been used for external slopes of windows. They are also called ebbs. They also serve to protect windows from adverse factors.

Varieties

The proper arrangement of the parapets is the final part of the design of any building and house, without this detail the construction will be considered unfinished.

There are several types of fences:

  • flat parapet with a rectangular dropper. This option is the most reliable in terms of fasteners;
  • a flat and even parapet with droppers spaced apart;
  • fencing "horse". This design has a distinctive feature in the form of lower fasteners and a visor on top;
  • parapet with two slopes;
  • two ramps and a rectangular dropper. This type of design is very reliable;
  • a complex version of the design, having two droppers along which water should flow in two directions.

How to make it better

To create a parapet on a crash use:

  • reinforced concrete;
  • brick;
  • metal;
  • concrete blocks.

Please note that fences made of metal, especially galvanized steel, are especially popular, as they are more reliable and resistant to corrosion.

For fences of loggias and balconies, mainly used:

  • concrete;
  • metal;
  • foam block;
  • tree.

Most often, the height of such parapets is about 80 - 120 centimeters.

Modern designers offer glass fencing of loggias or balconies, thereby making them more attractive and original. Aluminum structures also look quite stylish, while they are more resistant to damage.

Federal Law No. 122-FZ

When installing the parapet, federal law should be taken into account, in accordance with which, the height of the fence in industrial buildings should be more than 60 centimeters and it is additionally necessary to make a trellised fence.

As for residential buildings, their roofs should also be protected with parapets.

The height of the fencing of roofs, balconies and terraces in public buildings (clinics, shopping centers, etc.) should exceed 90 centimeters. In addition, the fence should always be solid and have handrails.

Please note that regardless of the height of the structure, the parapet should always be on roofs with a flat surface.
  Thus, the parapet is an integral part of any building. Its main task is to protect the structure from the negative effects of the environment.

Keep in mind:  Only professionals should deal with the installation of the fence, since this kind of construction work has many different nuances, ignorance of which may negatively affect the future.

Parapets can be of various shapes, varieties, materials. Their choice depends primarily on the functional load of the fence and the concept of the building. It is worth noting that the federal law spells out the basic requirements for the height of the fence, which must be adhered to during construction.

The word "parapet" of French-Italian origin, its literal translation will sound like "protect the chest." In the field of construction, the term "parapet" means a small fence (wall) along the perimeter of the roof of the building (both residential and public). In other words, this is a kind of continuation of the walls that protrude above the level of the roof. Such a barrier is intended for both flat and pitched roofs.

Types of parapet and its functions

Specialists distinguish several types of parapet depending on the building structure:

  • flat (with a flat surface, additionally equipped with droppers for water drainage);
  • ridge (covered with an additional visor);
  • complex (ridge with built-in droppers, bent under the visor);
  • simple or gable;
  • figured (in the form of a handrail).

The choice of the shape of the parapet fence depends on its functional purpose. Consider the main functions of the parapet for the roofs of any buildings:

  1. Protective:
    • from disruptions of the roofing by strong gusts of wind;
    • from fire in case of fire in a neighboring building;
    • free flow of rain to maintain the integrity of the roof.
  2. Decorative - to individualize the design decision (decorated with decorating elements in the form of stucco moldings, curly overlays, etc.).

Depending on the material of manufacture, such fences are brick or metal.

Material for the manufacture of roof railings

For roofs of public buildings, the parapet must be made of metal materials:

  • steel - stainless, galvanized or with special powder coating (to increase the service life and give the necessary color shade);
  • copper;
  • various alloys (stipulated by the relevant building codes) - aluminum, finished metal profiles.

The thickness of the metal structure should be from 3 mm. In addition, it is coated with a layer of special paint to prevent corrosion. Also, these structures require equipment with struts and racks, as they are attached to the roof with their help.

Such a parapet, used on the roof, combines both basic functions - both protective and aesthetic.

Brick is used most often in the construction of residential buildings. The parapet of this material is built directly in the process of building the house itself. A feature of a brick fence is:

  • low height;
  • metal apron;
  • a groove for the establishment of the roofing, which is fixed with a special bar.

Concrete blocks and monolithic reinforced concrete can also be used to create the parapet.

Features of the installation of the parapet on the roof

Russian construction is subject to special building codes and rules that are adopted by local executive authorities in the form of normative acts of a technical direction - SNiPs. According to these standard norms, the height of the parapets can be different - 60 centimeters, 90 centimeters, 1 meter 20 centimeters. These criteria depend on the slope of the roof and the height of the cornice:

  • if the slope is up to 12%, the height of the parapet fence on the roof is allowed over 10 meters;
  • if the slope exceeds 12%, then the parapet can be more than 7 meters.

Such standards are provided for fire safety for roofs with a flat type of roof, balconies and loggias, as well as open flights of stairs, etc.

Each in its own way represents the parapet. Some in the form of a solid wall from a half meter high along the edge of the roof. Others see powerful stone fences along the banks of rivers and other bodies of water within the city. Cast-iron cast-iron railings on bridges, graceful but durable fencing of balconies, curly walls along the edge of the roof of ancient buildings - this is also a parapet.

Solid parapet on the roof

  Railing parapet on the roof

Recently, another meaning has appeared: this is how they began to call decorative elements made of various materials, which cover the fence from the effects of bad weather.

Even from a simple enumeration of species, two main functions of this architectural design become clear.

  • Roof protection and human safety. A parapet along the edge of the roof reduces the risk of workers falling from a height during repair work, and prevents foreign objects from falling from the roof (branches, construction debris). Parapets without fail are installed on flat roofs to "close up" in them the lower edge of a rolled roof. This eliminates damage to it by the wind and leakage of the waterproofing layer.
  • Decorative function. Parapets with decoration not only decorate the building, but also allow you to hide all the technical structures on the roof - ventilation, antennas, air conditioners.

What are the parapets?

The design and appearance of the parapets depends on their location and purpose. They can be flat and gable, curly and in the form of a railing, closed with decorative overlays and without them. The material for manufacturing is also different: metal, stone, brick, concrete.

The shape of the parapet wall (especially on high-rise buildings) is most often simple, and diversity is achieved by installing different plates of steel, plastic, copper.

Roof parapet height

The minimum height of the parapet on the roof according to SNiP is set depending on the slope of the roof, number of storeys and "attendance". On operated roofs and on buildings over 10 m, parapets with a height of not less than 1.2 m are installed. On flat roofs and where “no human foot steps”, the construction of a metal fence or parapet from a height of 0.5 m is allowed.

All fencing structures at heights, large and small, protective and decorative, should be well secured. Not only the walls themselves, but also all the associated elements.

DIY parapet decorative function

During the construction of multi-story buildings, we cannot interfere with the construction of parapets. Another thing is in private construction. There are many design possibilities to your liking. These are not only parapets on the roof, but also decorative retaining walls in sloping areas, design of ebbs on the foundation, decoration of brick fences and pillars (also a kind of parapet).

There are several possibilities for this.

First, select the design material and call a team of tinsmith masters. You just have to watch the progress of work.

The second way is a little more complicated and requires you to work with metal. It is necessary to select the size and purchase finished products - they are enough on the construction market. Then set them to their destination. The difficulty is not only in the possession of tools, but in understanding the design - what it serves for.

A typical parapet trim kit consists of mounting brackets and a parapet drain of plastic coated metal. Installation is carried out after finishing work on the wall of the fence. The brackets are mounted with anchors to the parapet. They put a drain and fasten with rivets. The next drain is overlapped, the joints are coated with sealant. A possible option is the formation of a fold at the junction.

Another way to fix the top drain involves installing mounting strips on both sides of the parapet wall. In this way, you can install the parapet on the uneven surface of any wall of the fence.

In a similar way, ebbs are installed on the foundation of the house and on the brick fence.

Particular attention is paid to the correct installation of droppers and the formation of junctions to vertical surfaces. Otherwise, drips of water along the wall will nullify all your efforts.
