To solve the problems of limited free space and increase its functionality in a small apartment, many owners make a folding table with their own hands. By installing it in the kitchen, you can free up space by using it as a dining table.

This is an interior item in the form of a board attached to the wall. Placed in a small room, it serves as a table. It can be an excellent assistant if used correctly.

Reclining table and bench

The folding table is distinguished by its functionality and ergonomics, and fits harmoniously into the space of any room. It can significantly save working space.

Advantages and disadvantages of the product

The design has a number of advantages:

  • Compactness
  • Functionality
  • Stylish design
  • Easy to install

One of the disadvantages of folding tables is their small size. If you make it larger, the result will be a heavy and bulky structure. The operation of such a table will be more difficult. It will be difficult to fold.

Table details

To build a folding table, you need to prepare the following parts:

  • table top
  • bottom and top of the shelf
  • sides and partitions
  • back

As accessories, it is necessary to prepare self-tapping screws, hinges, confirmants and anchors.

During the work you can use the following tools:

  • electric jigsaw (hacksaw or regular jigsaw)
  • manual milling machine
  • grinder
  • screwdriver
  • drill and set of drill bits

They also use a ruler, tape measure, pencil, level and construction square.

Having prepared the parts and the necessary tools, you can begin to work.

Preparation of the drawing

When building a folding table with a wall mount with your own hands, drawings of the parts and the product itself are done first.

The prepared diagram will help you quickly and without errors make a built-in piece of furniture. The drawing must contain the exact dimensions of the product.

Making a countertop

Before starting the process, you should select the material for the manufacture of this part. The most popular are:

  • plywood, chipboard, MDF
  • natural wood
  • glass

Description of materials

They are used depending on the location and shape of the table.

Plywood, chipboard, MDF

This sheet material is used in the manufacture of countertops. Integrity is the main advantage of the material. Using a jigsaw, you can cut out a tabletop that is ready for use. Only on the cut edges you need to stick a special tape. A table made from this material is light in weight, which allows the tabletop to easily recline.

When choosing one of these materials, plywood deserves more consideration. Especially laminated and moisture resistant. It has a long service life compared to others.

Natural wood

This is an environmentally friendly, elegant, stylish, fairly durable material. When using it to make a table, two conditions must be met:

  • the right type of wood
  • the presence of special equipment due to complex manufacturing technology.

These factors affect the cost of the product, even if you make it yourself. If you have your own hand router, or at least a jigsaw and a wooden board, you can easily build a wall-mounted kitchen table.

Glass

Thick tempered glass is used for tabletops.

This type of countertops must be ordered separately, since this material will not be cut at home. It is used extremely rarely.

The choice of material is influenced by the location where the built-in table will be installed. Made from wood or glass, it will look different when installed separately from other pieces of furniture.
MDF, chipboard and plywood are considered universal materials.

The shapes of countertops can be very diverse, but the most popular are square, rectangular, round and semicircular.

An electric jigsaw is used to cut the selected material into the required shape.
The edges are processed with a sanding machine and covered with a special tape to give it a marketable appearance.

Supports used in the product

To securely fix it, supports are made for the table. They may look like a triangular headscarf or the letter P.

If the structure is short, use a triangular support. The bracket is attached with hinges under the bottom of the tabletop. You cannot install a folding table in this way above the radiator, since the entire weight of the product will fall on it.

A triangle is suitable when attaching the structure to the wall surface. By installing two strips on the sides, you can strengthen it.

To make U-shaped supports, beams are used, connected to each other by the letter P. They are installed under the bottom of the tabletop, on the sides. The finished structure is attached to the tabletop using hinges. This will allow you to fold the finished table.

The process of assembling the finished structure

One of the simplest answers to the question is the process itself, how to make a folding table with your own hands. It will take a maximum of 30 minutes. The manufacturing instructions are quite simple.

To make a folding table, you don’t need any special knowledge. Anyone can create a design and install it, even without much experience in such work.

A wall near the window sill or the window sill itself is ideal for mounting this piece of furniture.

A folding table will fit most harmoniously into the interior and will not take up much space. In addition, this arrangement will save electricity, since the lighting will come from the window. If a heating radiator is placed under the installed structure, the countertop must have holes so that a sufficient volume of warm air can penetrate into the room.

To clarify the parameters, it is necessary to attach the workpiece to the intended mounting location.

The tabletop is connected to the support strips with hinges and is attached to the wall or window sill with their help. Can be fastened with self-tapping screws. Finally, the structure is tested for strength.

In this way you can make a folding table with your own hands. This homemade table will be distinguished by its compactness and practicality.

The well-known saying “in trouble, but not in harm’s way”, unfortunately, is not always true. Owners of small apartments know very well how often irritation and conflicts arise precisely because of cramped spaces. The housewife is nervous because she does not have enough work surfaces in the kitchen. The husband is angry that he does not have his own corner in the house. Children are quarreling over the only study table... All this is upsetting, but there is absolutely nowhere to put extra furniture!
Meanwhile, a wall-mounted folding table will solve the problem easily and inexpensively. How much space does he need? You will be surprised – not at all! When folded, it is just a board pressed against the wall. When unfolded there is a comfortable and durable surface with an area of 800x600 mm, made of high-quality industrial grade laminated chipboard Union .
Minimum space – maximum convenience:
Just imagine how a folding table will become the center of attention in your home and will provide:

I would like to thank the creator of these designs for bringing them to light - the Amphion design was very useful to me. I am a professional dressmaker and often sew at home. I have long wanted to have a separate table for cutting (the fact is that an ordinary dining table is not very suitable for this, because it is 10 cm lower and this hurts my back), but a large table would never fit in my room. Therefore, the idea arose to make it foldable... The table was made to order and an additional tabletop was ordered separately for it... The husband promised to find a way to connect one to the other. But then it turned out that apart from the corners and a removable leg, there was nothing suitable in stores. I found this site quite by accident, showed my husband the Roborex-Amphion design, he said that this is what we need! HOORAY! I ordered, paid, everything was delivered, my husband put everything together according to the diagram and now I’m happy - I have a gorgeous workplace! The design allows me to easily fold and unfold the table without my husband’s participation!
I also want to say that I was very pleased with the communication with the master - the inventor of this design: I received answers to all my questions before purchasing very quickly, in detail and competently! Thank you!

Drawers, cabinets, refrigerator, stove... The place for the table has to be chosen according to the residual principle. But, even if there is not enough space for a full-fledged dining table, this is not a reason to be upset. Look at these original ideas for compact dining spaces; they often look even better than the classic version!

To free up more space in the kitchen, try to adhere to the following rules:

  • A square or semicircular table is better than a round one, as it fits close to the wall or is placed in a corner.
  • A light table is better than a dark one, as it looks lighter. And even better - a glass tabletop.
  • One leg is better than four: more space and fewer bruised toes.
  • Chairs are also important: if they are completely retractable under the table, you will have room to spread out.

Table transformer

It is best for a small kitchen to purchase a table with a folding tabletop or a sliding transforming table. This table, when assembled, is suitable for two, but can become larger when guests arrive.

Wall table

This table is similar to the ones we see on trains. It is usually quite narrow and has a single leg or diagonal support on the wall. It’s most convenient when such a table is attached to the wall with the short side, but not every kitchen’s dimensions will allow it to be positioned this way.

Folding table

A folding table is most often either semicircular or rectangular. When unfolded, it may be similar to a regular wall-mounted one, but not with such a long tabletop. The structure is attached to the wall and, until not in use, looks more like a narrow shelf. Then the table is placed on a spacer or leg and a full-fledged dining space is ready! A folding table will allow you to move freely around the kitchen while cooking, without sacrificing comfortable seating while eating.

Bar counter

The bar counter is narrow and long, but it can comfortably accommodate up to five people. Due to its height, it combines well with kitchen furniture, which also saves space.

Tabletop near a wall or window

A narrow wall-mounted countertop will perfectly replace a table in a small, elongated kitchen. The only significant disadvantage will be the wall in front of your eyes, so the best place to place it is by the window. A wide window sill can also serve as such a dining place.

Multifunctional tabletop

If you are willing to sacrifice one of the storage drawers in your kitchen unit, you can use part of the work surface as a table. The table can also be placed perpendicular to the set, but then it is better to choose a place not in the working triangle for its placement.

Extendable table

You can provide a table right inside the kitchen furniture! This is also convenient because, if necessary, an additional surface for cooking appears. However, such a table cannot withstand heavy loads if it does not have support.

Another option for a retractable table is a rotating tabletop, which forms a bar counter. That is, you first cook comfortably on this surface, and then turn it perpendicular to the kitchen set, and the table is ready! This dining space includes bar stools or stools.

Surely many owners constantly complain about the lack of free space. However, this problem can be solved if you approach the layout of each room wisely. In this case, it will be possible not only to get a beautiful, comfortable interior, but also to free up the area as much as possible from unnecessary things. If you are faced with a similar problem, try to use multifunctional interior elements, as well as folding furniture. One such option is a folding table. As a rule, it is used in the kitchen, where it becomes an excellent alternative to the classic one. If you are interested in learning how to choose a folding table or make one yourself, our article will definitely help you with this!

A folding table will save you a lot of space

Folding table: advantages and rules of use

What kind of mechanism is this - a folding table? This is not just a plank that is attached to the wall and acts as a table in small spaces. This is a completely self-sufficient element of the interior, which, with the right approach, can become your good assistant. Typically, it is used in small spaces, such as the kitchen, pantry or balcony. Of course, such a piece of furniture cannot become the center of the room, but that’s why it is foldable, so that if necessary it can be folded, and it does not attract unnecessary attention to itself.

Of course, its main advantage is its compactness. After all, there is no room to turn around in or on a narrow balcony, especially if there are several people in the room. If the table is not needed at the moment, you can simply fold it along the wall and enjoy the freed up space.

Another undoubted advantage is the lower cost of folding models compared to classic tables. Even if you choose a wall-mounted folding table made from some expensive type of wood, it will still cost you less than a standard table made from the same material.

Another advantage of this design is the ability to fold it if necessary, thereby freeing up additional free space. And if it is almost always laid out in your kitchen or on the balcony, even in this state it will look much lighter and weightless than its classic counterparts.

However, against the backdrop of all the above advantages, we should not forget about the disadvantages of a wall-mounted table. This design is considered quite miniature. That is, it will be comfortable for one, or maximum two, family members to dine at it. To eat food in comfortable conditions, one person requires an area of at least 40x60 cm. The dimensions of the folding table can be a maximum of twice as large so that two people can fit behind it. If you make it large in size, it will not be so convenient to constantly put and fold the table back, the design will turn out to be bulky and heavy.

Another equally significant drawback is the limitations in the size and shape of the table. The folding mechanism is quite specific, so not every tabletop shape will look harmonious. So, the most common shapes are semicircle and square. Modern furniture manufacturers also offer oval and rectangular options. They are more suitable for narrower and longer rooms. However, as practice shows, using folding tables of such shapes is not so convenient.

In addition, not every size tabletop can be attached to the wall. A surface that is too large will be too heavy to regularly fold and unfold the mechanism. In addition, the height of the entire structure will depend on the size of the tabletop, otherwise a table surface that is too large will simply drag along the floor.

The folding mechanism also imposes some restrictions on the material from which the table will be made. Some may argue, because glass, wood, and plastic, as well as countertops made of many other materials, can be attached to the wall. On the one hand, high-quality fasteners will allow you to support any weight, on the other hand, is it practical to use a folding tabletop, for example, made of glass? One careless movement - and it will be covered with thousands of small cracks and cobwebs. This option is hardly worth considering, especially if. It is also unlikely that a stone countertop for a folding table will work - also not the best solution. Even if you manage to secure it very firmly and reliably, just imagine how much effort it will cost you to raise and lower it every time. And if such a tabletop is constantly in a disassembled position, what is the point of it?

And despite the number of limitations that the folding table mechanism has, it is practically impossible to do without it in small kitchens and on balconies. If you haven't found a suitable wall table model yet, try making one yourself!

Making a folding table with your own hands

Before you start doing the work yourself, you need to decide on the material from which the table will be made.

As mentioned above, there are many options for arranging this interior element. As practice shows, most people prefer plywood, chipboard or MDF sheets. After all, it is these materials that are easiest for a non-professional to work with without special equipment. In addition, these materials are relatively lightweight, which will allow you to open and close the table mechanism several times a day without much effort. It is best to use laminated and moisture-resistant plywood. It is quite light, durable and will repel water. It is enough to cut the plywood to shape using a jigsaw, thanks to which you will get a finished tabletop. All you have to do is equip it with legs - and the table is ready!

The second most popular material is natural wood. It has many advantages: naturalness, environmental friendliness, sophistication and nobility. However, you are unlikely to be able to make something similar to a tabletop from a layer of natural wood with your own hands without the help of special equipment. In addition, you need to have specific skills in working with wood. Without these two factors, you should not try your hand at such expensive material.

The same goes for glass. You won’t be able to cut a tabletop from a thick tempered piece of glass yourself without special equipment and skills. In addition, the finished tabletop will need to be additionally processed around the edges and holes made in it for attaching to the wall.

If you have already decided on the material, then it’s time to start working on it yourself. One of the most important points is the installation of wall mounts and folding systems. There are many options for arranging a folding table cover, but we bring to your attention one of the simplest. For it you will need to purchase a special mechanism - the so-called folding bracket in the amount of two pieces. These brackets will perform the function of raising and lowering the tabletop to the wall. If this is your first experience in this kind of work, we recommend starting with sheets of plywood or MDF boards. Using plywood as an example, we will tell you how to make a folding table with your own hands.

The first step is to cut the tabletop to the required shape and size. Once you have it in front of you, be sure to go over its surface with a sanding attachment or sandpaper - first coarse-grained, then fine-grained, not forgetting to sand the corners. It is easiest to cut a square or rectangular tabletop. But even with this shape, it is best to make more rounded corners to avoid traumatic situations.

If you use untreated material, you must apply a moisture-resistant coating to the plywood or MDF, as well as a special antiseptic that will protect it from fungus and mold. These properties are especially relevant for the kitchen and balcony. After the antiseptic has completely dried, you can cover the tabletop with two layers of varnish, first allowing each to dry thoroughly.

Now you can begin installing the brackets. They are attached using dowels and self-tapping screws. You should retreat 6-7 cm from the side edges of the tabletop on each side. This creates a reserve for your palms when you open the table. The bracket should be attached after careful fitting of the tabletop to the wall at a right angle. Only after this you need to mark the places of future fastenings (screws) and, after preliminary marking, make holes at the marked points. Self-tapping screws are screwed directly into a sheet of plywood, so you need to put another piece of plywood on it in advance, which will protect against through-drilling of the tabletop. We attach the brackets.

Now it's time to install the tabletop to the wall. It is necessary to decide on the height of the future table. When calculating the height, be sure to sit on the usual chairs or stools that you plan to continue using with this folding table. Mark the height line where the table will be located using masking tape or a pencil. Mark the mounting points for the brackets. Make holes for them using a hammer drill. Using dowels, we secure the table top with brackets to the wall. After this, you need to check whether the table is level using a building level. In case of unevenness, adjustments will need to be made.

The last stage is to check the operation of the folding mechanism. If you did everything correctly, the table will recline without problems, and the folding mechanism will slide smoothly and lock firmly.

As you can see, in this example of creating a folding table there is nothing difficult even for a beginner in construction work. It is important to maintain all proportions and not try to create an overly large and monumental table for the first time. There are many different ways to attach a table to a wall. Have you tried any of them? Be sure to share your experience with us and our readers in the comments under this article!

What is a folding table? This is a surface that can be either vertical or horizontal.
A table, even a small one, takes up a decent amount of space in the room, and the desire to organize space pushes one to use an empty wall surface. If we consider it as a tabletop on supports: how little space will it take up vertically, provided the legs are folded along it? Of course, this idea is not very new and the art of transforming the table was used not only by our grandfathers, but by our great- and great-great-grandfathers. And over the centuries, the design has undergone both structural and stylistic changes. Today we can see a wide selection of folding transforming tables for any purpose and room.

Transformable folding tables for the kitchen

If in the last century the main direction of folding tables were secretaries and coffee tables, now these are mainly dining surfaces. A modern family of average income can only dream of a large kitchen, 20 or more square meters, but in practice they have to be sophisticated: put as much as possible in the kitchen, while taking up as little space as possible. IN . meters, folding tables began to appear more and more often.

Wall-mounted folding tables can be assembled as a narrow shelf, or they can completely merge with the wall. Their unfolded size is also very different: from a tea table for 1-2 people to a full-size table for 6-10 people. No conditions are required for the location of folding surfaces other than for reasons of convenience. In this vein, the flight of fancy is not limited:

A folding kitchen table can be placed directly on the heating radiator. In addition to masking the battery, it will regulate the temperature in the kitchen. But you need to remember that the radiator cannot be completely closed, otherwise it will heat the countertop and poorly heat the room. To prevent this from happening, you need to provide ventilation ducts in the top shelf and on the sides.

Such a transforming table can become a mobile extension of the cutting room: along the windowsill, an additional surface at the sink, a table for cooling pies or a bar counter. It all depends on your needs.

And if you have an extended doorway into the kitchen, then even the corner can have a folding tea table.

Dining table-book

A very popular option in the Soviet Union was a book-table with two folding surfaces. In normal times, such a transformer stood closer to the wall or in a corner and served as a surface for wiping dust, but on all holidays it was an indispensable nail, or rather a table. Modern designers have finalized the idea (which was just asking for it) by adding a book-table to the kitchen (with an appropriate design) and replacing the place of the shelves with a niche for folding chairs, thereby turning it into a transformable table with chairs. You can adjust its size by raising one or two “wings”.

A very interesting solution for the kitchen is our next sample. Transformable dining table three in one. The trick of this table is that there are not one, but two tables hiding on the wall! First we fold out the small table, and if a larger area is needed, we fold out the second one, which folds over the small one. When folded, this structure on the wall is 3-4 cm thick. This mechanism is also used for a table-picture.

The wall-mounted folding table with a stationary tea table with legs has the same functionality.

As we have already seen, the table can recline both up and down. What if you make it all the way to the ceiling? If so, then we will get a huge table for large celebrations with minimal waste of free space on ordinary days. Uninitiated guests will not even guess that such a giant lives in your room or kitchen. This will probably be especially true for a studio apartment, where the room is combined with a kitchen.

Folding tables for residential premises

Not only the kitchen, but also the living rooms take part in the struggle for space. In addition, the massive distribution of computers for the home has led to the need to accommodate work places for almost all family members. And the developing trend of hobbies: handicrafts, modeling, etc. also require an equipped space and, in most cases, with the participation of a table. In these conditions, transformable furniture is indispensable.

Wall cabinet with hinged door-table top

This is far from a new idea, but, nevertheless, even more relevant than before. Of course, you can’t put a huge monitor and speakers on such a table, but it’s quite suitable for a laptop. In this case, a minimum area will be required for a home workplace.
And if you use your imagination, this small workspace can be marked out both in the hallway and in the kitchen.

Rack with folding table

This option is more massive, but more functional. The open shelves of such a table are always accessible, and the presence of space for two folding chairs increases the compactness of the structure. In addition, the folding table folds out into a kind of bar counter and there is an approach to the tabletop from three sides, which makes it possible to seat not one, but two people at it for working on a laptop or for communication.

Secretaire

This is a chest of drawers combined with a vertical cabinet with a hinged door. A very old and practical invention that fits discreetly into the bedroom interior. Of course, this is closer to the ladies’ version, but nowadays a woman also needs to have “her own place.”

Folding table based on the accordion principle

This is still the same mechanism on which it is based, only it looks more modest, without posters and mirrors, but with an ordinary facade, behind which a functional cabinet is hidden.

Folding table in the closet

Here we are talking about a full-fledged room, wardrobe or pantry cabinet. Most often, the table in it is narrow and long and is used for ironing clothes, sewing or cutting and sorting things and products.

Wardrobe-bed with folding table

This design is already a multifunctional complex with day and night division of functions.
By the way, the wardrobe-bed itself is based on the folding principle; it is even called a folding bed. And a transforming table, which takes up virtually no space, is a logical solution for such a design. Now, no matter how small the living space is, it can be comfortable to live in.

Folding tables for any room

In conclusion, I want to say that a folding surface - an additional table or shelf - will be appropriate in any room and for any purpose, be it a children's room, a bathroom or even a toilet. With it, you can arrange a comfort and relaxation zone everywhere; it can be a backup work surface and a seasonal helper (for example, for seedlings). It solves issues of landscaping even very small rooms, such as a balcony, storage room, etc.
