Honoring orthodox holidays an integral part of the life of believers who strive to observe all canons and religious rites. In this article we will name and describe all church holidays Russia in 2017 year, which almost completely coincide in dates with the holidays of the church days of any other Orthodox country.

There are many different classifications of holidays in church calendar... There is not much difference for an ordinary person, which scheme to use in everyday life, as to navigate when and what a holiday according to the church calendar 2017an inexpensive calendar bought in an icon store of any Orthodox Church will help.

But each calendar always uses one or another classification, so you need to know its meaning in order to behave correctly on the day of a religious celebration.

For convenience, we conventionally divided all church holidays into five main groups. Some of them were subdivided into subgroups:

  1. Great Orthodox holidays

This group includes all celebrations that Orthodox people consider to be the most important in comparison with the rest. These days, as a rule, they give up worldly life, do not work, gather with their families at the table, go to church services, sanctify water, icons, food.

  1. Twelve Orthodox holidays

These identities are also very important in the church calendar. They received the name twelve because they are included in the list of the 12 most valuable holidays for Orthodox people after Easter. They, in turn, are divided into:

  • Passing holidays are those that change their date every year (the day of their celebration is counted from the date of the Great Resurrection of Jesus Christ).
  • Intransitive - having a constant date.

  1. Great posts

These are the days when you need to strictly abstain from eating. They are divided into two main subgroups:

  • One-day fasts - restrictions that must be observed for no more than one day
  • Multi-day fasts - fasts to be observed for weeks or even months
  1. Weeks

  1. Days of remembrance of the departed

On these days, families gather for a meal at home, go to the cemeteries to the graves of deceased relatives to commemorate them.

Church Holidays Calendar 2017

Since the main church holidays were listed in the classification, for clarity, we transferred them to the calendar, conventionally designating:

  • Red numbers on the calendar - signify important church holidays
  • Days highlighted in pink - days of strict fasting
  • The days highlighted in black are the days of commemoration of the dead

  • The days highlighted in lilac are the days of non-strict fasting, when you can eat everything except meat and fish
