We make an easel with our own hands from available materials. Even a girl can assemble such an easel. Instructions in photos

Today I will tell you how to make an easel with your own hands, since easels in the store cost around 4000 rubles, the same easel will cost you only 400 rubles.
Making this easel is easy.

We will need slats measuring 20x45, 2 meters each - 5 pieces. We cut them into the following sizes:
168 cm - 2 pcs.,
154 cm - 1 pc.,
146 cm - 1 pc.,
53 cm - 1 pc.,
39 cm - 1 pc.,
60 cm - 3 pcs.

Now we put a 146 cm rail - this is the basis of our easel.

Relative to it, we lay out horizontal slats measuring 39 and 53 cm.

We retreat 55 cm and lay out a horizontal rail measuring 39 cm. For the lower rail, we retreat from below 3 centimeters. Side rails can be removed for now, we need them.

Now in the center of the transverse rails we make a hole with a drill.

Next, we need to lay them out exactly in the center of the 146 cm river. So here's what we get:

Now we need to lay out the 168 cm side rails. The rails should be symmetrical

Now, using a drill, we make holes for the screws and fasten our side rails with the help of self-tapping screws.

Now we remake the leg of our easel. To do this, we take the usual door hinge. Fasten first to the easel then to the rail. Let's make it as if in expanded form.

How to make an easel with your own hands?

Here's what should happen:

Now it remains to make only a shelf for the easel.
For this you will need:

  • 3 slats of 60 cm
  • Nails
  • Drill
  • 2 bolts with wing nuts

We drill two holes in two 60 cm rails just above the middle.

Next we make a shelf for the easel. To do this, we connect two slats of 60 centimeters each and fasten them with nails.

Now we take our third rail and with the help of bolts and nuts "lamb" we install our shelf on the easel.

The easel is ready.

I hope this guide was helpful to you. If you suddenly have any questions, ask in the comments, I will be happy to answer them.

How to make an easel with your own hands, options. easel types.

Easel, translated from German "Malbrett", means - a shelf for painting. This is a special device for artists (machine), on which the canvas is fixed with a convenient slope for work (so that the plane of the picture is perpendicular to the line of sight).

Drawing on easels began back in the 15th century, when they served not only as a device for drawing paintings, but also served as a kind of attribute, decoration of the artist’s studio, they often installed ready-made paintings on them.

The most commonly used, and still use, tripod easels, they are less bulky and stand stably on any, not even a flat surface. Although there are easels with four legs, these are preferably children's easels, where stability is valued above all.

There are different options for easels: standard, for standing drawing, table easels, and, as I already mentioned, children's easels. The design of easels can also be different, and to begin with, let's look at the photo, what easels are, including factory-made ones.

But the options for desktop easels, they are usually used for painting small paintings. It is much more convenient to draw such pictures while sitting at the table. And this is not the whole list, there are other types of table easels.

In this photo, the first easel (on the left), it is without canvas clamps and is intended purely for the exhibition of paintings.

As you can see in the photo, the design of easels is quite simple and making it yourself is not difficult even for craftsmen with little experience working with wood. As a material, you can use ready-made slats made of pine, beech or walnut, with a cross section of approximately 20x55 mm. The most optimal option is beech, but if not, other dry wood will do.

What is an easel, types, assembly and do-it-yourself repair?

The height of the easel (2 front stands) during manufacture is usually selected individually, on average it is 170 cm, i.e. equals average height, and the width at the base is 60-70 cm. The rear support with the above parameters is 155 cm, and the transverse jumpers are 40 cm and 55 cm. I give these dimensions for orientation. And it is best to lay out the slats on a flat floor and adjust the dimensions as you wish.

It is best to make a canvas shelf for this design (see photo below), with two wing screws, it will hold firmly, because it will be clamped on all three rails, and not just on one, the central one, and it can be easily moved along height. And in the place where the stretcher with the canvas will stand, you can make shallow (2-3 mm) cuts so that the stretcher does not slip off.

Sometimes the shelf is fixed on the side slats, but then holes must be drilled in them in increments of 7 cm.

The upper canvas clamp is best done on the grooves (see photo above) made in the central rail, then it can be moved from the very top of the bar and up to the shelf stop, without additional restructuring, for any canvas size.

The upper clamp is made not only from wood, but also from metal. In this case, it will be stronger and more convenient to use, and now it’s not a problem to find a welding machine, an electric drill, a grinder ...

It is better to fasten ready-made blanks with self-tapping screws, 2 pieces at each point, then the easel will not fold diagonally.

Having finished all the work on assembling the easel, it must also be sanded, sharp corners, roughness, and opened with matte varnish or another, or impregnated with 1-2 layers of drying oil, or special impregnation for wood, especially the legs. This action protects the wood from moisture and pests, and your easel will serve you for many, many years ...

Types of easels

The market for easels today is wide and varied, manufacturers offer a huge variety of models for various creative tasks and various operating conditions. The article will help you understand the classification and types of easels and will be useful when choosing the first easel.

Easel "Lyra"

A-shaped easel (A-Frame easel), better known as the "Easel-Lyre", is based on a triangle. This design allows for stability while being small and light, and the single back support is particularly useful for small spaces and also allows the easel to be placed in a corner. Many A-frame easels have a top canvas holder and can be adjusted in height and angle.

The main advantages of the easel-lyre are its light weight, reliability and simplicity of design, compact size, ease of installation and storage. In addition, A-frame easels are often used as display easels and are suitable for displaying anything from painting to promotional items.

H-shaped (studio) easel

It just so happened that the word "studio easel" usually means just such a design (although formally all easels used indoors are referred to as studio easels). Thanks to its rectangular silhouette and base, the design of this easel is the most rigid and durable. It allows you to work with large formats, adjustable in height and tilt. Some models make it possible to tilt the canvas not only back, but also towards itself. Studio easels have a shelf and a top canvas holder.

H-shaped easels are well-deservedly popular in art schools and workshops. Remaining technically simple, and therefore reliable and inexpensive, the design of the studio easel allows both the student and the professional painter to work comfortably.

Due to the large weight and dimensions, studio easels are inferior to lyres and "masts" in mobility, and are also demanding on space.

Convertible (hybrid) easel

A convertible easel, sometimes called a hybrid easel, is a type of H-shaped studio easel. It features greater flexibility of adjustments, which allows the master to work in different techniques and with a variety of materials. For example, for varnishing, the convertible easel can be moved to a horizontal position without removing the canvas. As a rule, hybrid easels have a wide base and a top holder for working with huge formats.

The Large Easel is a professional and versatile tool for stationary use in the studio.

easel

The easel (Giant easel) is another variation of the classic studio H-shaped easel. It differs, first of all, in size and is designed to work with truly huge canvases. To meet the special needs of gigantist artists, easel easels can be equipped with several masts to hold wide canvases and even a winch to help adjust the height of the frame under heavy canvases.

Easel easels are also in demand in restoration workshops. This is a highly specialized tool, often custom-made for specific purposes.

Mast easel

These easels have the simplest silhouette of all models. They are distinguished by their elegant design and visual lightness, but from a professional point of view they lose to other types, they lack the strength and flexibility of traditional designs. However, masted easels allow you to adjust the height and angle of the canvas, and their portability and ability to fold quickly and compactly in certain conditions can be a decisive advantage.

Due to their aesthetic qualities, mast easels are in demand as expositions.

Craft product Modeling construction DIY easel Tree

They are suitable for small apartments or schools, as well as for occasional use.

Sketchbooks and tablets

A special type of easel, focused on plein air painting, their strong point is compactness and mobility. They are a box in which the artist keeps all the necessary tools and materials, with the ability to fix the canvas on the inside of the folded lid or using the built-in tilt-adjustable frame.

Sketchbooks differ from sketch boxes by the presence of folding legs. By changing their height, the sketchbook can be used outdoors, in the studio and even as a table easel.

The main disadvantage of sketchbooks was and remains the limitation of the size of the canvas, as a rule, no more than A3 format - the inevitable retribution for high mobility. In addition, the easel has a more complex design with many movable nodes, thereby yielding to other easels in terms of reliability.

Student easels

Classic "crackers" (this is the well-established nickname these easels received for the characteristic cotton at the time of folding) can be found in almost any children's art school and in an ordinary school in the art room. Wrongly tailored and tightly sewn - this is also about them! Simplicity of design, low price, compact dimensions and the ability to work simultaneously on opposite sides make such easels preferred for most state-owned children's institutions.

Structurally, the student's easel consists of 2 plywood displays on legs, movably connected to each other in the upper part. The canvas (in this case, paper, of course) is attached with ordinary pushpins or with clips at the top. Sometimes the surface of the easel is made in the form of a slate board for drawing with chalk.

Table easels

Another popular type of easels, widely demanded by amateurs. As the name suggests, these compact easels sit on a table. Structurally, they repeat the lyre or H-shaped easel and differ in size, have the necessary adjustments. As a rule, tabletop easels fold compactly for easy storage and transportation.

Due to their small size, tabletop easels seriously limit the size of the canvas. In addition, not everyone likes to work while sitting at a desk.

Bench easels and integrated easels

In the order of exotic, we note complex solutions, in the center of which is an easel built into some piece of furniture. Their forte is versatility and flexible transformation possibilities. The design can be either extremely simple - in the form of an ordinary shop with a canvas holder nailed to the end, or very complex - with all kinds of sections, holders, many drawers, shelves and other excesses that amaze the artist's imagination.

Presentation and decorative easels

Presentation or exhibition easels, as the name implies, are intended not to create, but to demonstrate masterpieces of fine art, although the latter does not exclude the former.

Such easels often allow you to install not one, but several canvases at once, many of them are equipped with wheels and a swivel mechanism. In addition, the use for presentation purposes dictates increased requirements for the aesthetic properties, materials and design of the easels themselves.

Step-by-step instructions for self-construction of an easel

Before you make an easel at home, you should take care of all the little things. Also make sure that you have all the necessary material on hand. Below is a detailed instruction, following which you can easily create a practical easel for drawing.

easel shelf

Wood glue dries completely within 24 hours. So, as soon as the creation of an easel for drawing is over, it is worth giving it at least a day to settle. After that, you can safely proceed to the further assembly of a personal home-made easel.

Read also A: as yourself.

It must be installed horizontally. After that, you should install and fix the shelf. For convenience during work, you need to correctly adjust everything in height.

It's time to fix the hinged hook. With it, the rear support rail will be held in position.

An easel is a structure made of wood or metal that allows the artist to hold a canvas or stretcher in front of them while working on their artwork.

Artists have been using easels for a long time, many of their designs have been created.

Easels for the artist's workshop are better to choose massive, made of wood or metal, with the ability to adjust the height of the vertical clamp for the stretcher. Such an easel must bear the load of a large-sized canvas and hold it steadily during operation.

These tripod easels were known a couple of hundred years ago and earlier.

This easel design is quite complex, it is a studio version, made of wood.

And this is a folding mobile metal tripod easel. It is often bought for open-airs, it is also suitable for small-format work (no more than 70 centimeters in height).

On the one hand, a mobile easel should not be heavy so that it is easy to move around with it, and on the other hand, it is better if its weight is higher and the legs are sharper so that it can be securely fixed in the soil, in order to avoid turning over during gust time.

At the same time, such an easel is good in studios where artists are trained. Any number of such easels is removed quite quickly on a shelf in a closet.

A desktop easel is a must for miniaturists. It is easier to place a small format picture right in front of your eyes on it, it is more stable for this format of work. The design of the table easel is very simple, you can see it from the photo:

Another version of the tripod easel.

And here is the simplest design of a tripod easel with a removable plywood stretcher plate.

This rather stable design of the easel is intended only for standing work, so the height of the stationary board-stretcher must be adjusted in accordance with the height of the artist.

This easel is foldable - mobility is ensured with the help of loops fastening the back and front to the stretcher. With the help of side rails with openings made at different widths, you can adjust the angle of the subframe.

My only caveat is that I would make the side rail longer and with more openings to allow for the gentler slope needed in some types of artwork.

Well, this easel design is very popular in Russia and can be found in art schools and institutes.

When you need to work in watercolor on a plane with an inclination of about 30 degrees, the stretcher of this easel was raised and leaned on a substituted chair. The artist worked standing up. A good option for creating works with a width of not more than fifty centimeters.

Using this drawing, it is easy to make such an easel with your own hands.

Do-it-yourself easel is savings in the first place and convenience in the second. A homemade thing can be customized just for you, making it multifunctional and meeting the requirements of each family member who uses it for work. Also, the design and design can be adjusted to the style of the room in which it will be located. Then it will be not only a working tool, but also a design element.

Materials and tools

Easels have several types, differing in their design and functions. The set of necessary materials and tools also depends on this. For the simplest easel, the following components are enough.

Tools:

  • a drawing or a simple hand sketch, according to which you will make a design;
  • hammer / screwdriver;
  • nails / screws;
  • hacksaw.

Materials:

  • dry wood - plywood, solid wood, pine;
  • slats.

All sizes depend on your desire. Consider the height of the user and the size of the canvas.

Desktop

Making a table easel for your home with your own hands is not difficult and does not take much time. Its design is small.

For manufacturing, you will need 4 slats - 2 of the same length, one shorter by 1 centimeter and a slat for the crossbar + slats for the frame or a solid sheet of plywood that matches the dimensions.

We cut two identical slats at an angle of 15-20 degrees and connect them to a short stick using a bolt with a nut or lamb. This is necessary to get the shape of the stand. On two frames cut at an angle, we put a crossbar on glue or nails, and put the shorter one aside. It turns out a desktop mini-tripod.

The easel is ready. Optionally, you can make a stretcher or plywood base for it.

Floor

It has many types and variations of manufacture. Each of them is available for manufacturing on their own. Among the advantages are collapsible, portable, double-sided and others.

Tripod

Another name is lira. Suitable for creating paintings and drawing on a dense basis. A convenient folding option will help save space. You can make a special sheet of wood for lining under the drawings.

Much more rails and connecting elements are useful here - 4 two-meter rails (2x4.5 cm), several rails for planks (2x3 cm). To make the folding element work, purchase bolts and anchors.

You can combine the design in the same way as for a desktop easel. But for greater stability, a design with reinforcement bars in three places is suitable - top, middle and bottom. Add a shelf for the base and stationery to the bottom bar. Attach the rear leg to the door hinge to the middle crossbar. If you have to work with large formats, then add the middle bar from the middle above the main canvas to the required distance.

Clapperboard

To make a simple folding clapperboard easel, you need to add door hinges to the main list of necessary materials. As a result, we will get a convenient portable easel. In order to carry it comfortably, it is important to consider the dimensions.

You will need wood blanks with dimensions of 1200x50x20 mm - 4 pieces, 560x50x20 mm - 4 pieces and 600x100x12 mm - 2 pieces. Next, we assemble our easel on a flat surface. When installing the hinges, be sure to check the angle of our cracker, otherwise the legs will be crooked and the easel will sway. We fasten the screws so that the hats crash deep into the tree. To facilitate the process and avoid chipping the wood, pre-drill the holes for the screws with a thin drill.

Surfaces can be treated with sandpaper or covered with a self-adhesive film.

bilateral

Great option for a child. It can be made according to the cracker principle, but there is a risk that the child will be uncomfortable and the legs will converge. A homemade easel provides for fixing legs and surfaces. At home, this is easy to do with the help of wooden jumpers on the legs around the entire perimeter of the easel.

Children's easel can be varied with decorations. It is also good to leave one side of the wooden - for drawing and games, and make the other side of the metal so that the child can play with magnets - letters, colored dots, and so on.

sketchbook

It is also not difficult to assemble a wooden portable sketchbook for drawing. The approximate size for convenience and comfort is 30x40 cm. The base and cover are best made of wood, but the side walls are made of plywood. You will also need wooden blocks or slats to connect the elements, although this can be done without them. To fix the cover, you will need a metal support with bolts. If you plan to store paper or cardboard in the lid, then you need to make a lid on the base with paints and brushes.

Flapper easels

Talented art lovers who regularly devote their personal time to drawing know that in order to increase comfort and convenience, it is better to carry out the creative process not on weight, but on a special device, an easel. It is customary to buy professional models of it in certain stores, but simple options, small in size, the so-called crackers, can be easily made on your own. An easel with your own hands is a good option, suitable for both those who are just starting to create, and for those who have already been able to succeed in this field.

The first stage, or Where to start

To make an easel with your own hands, you will need an initial drawing or diagram, which will need to be guided during the assembly process. If you are not a professional carpenter, then do not seek to resort to complex schemes.

Simple models are no less functional, but often benefit from practicality. They are easy to use, assemble and disassemble, and, if necessary, transport from place to place. Before you make an easel with your own hands, preliminary preparation of each wooden part is necessary. Sandpaper is usually used for this purpose, it gives the wood a finished look and makes the surface safer. After that, you will need to compile a list of materials and tools that will be used to make the easel. Depending on the model, this list may vary slightly. In general, a do-it-yourself easel will require you to purchase the following components: at least two wooden beams; fasteners, screws and bolts; plywood sheet; tool for doing the job. It can be a jigsaw or a drill.

We determine the dimensions

An easel, created with your own hands, in the minimum version will consist of four bars and a sheet of plywood. You can buy wooden elements in any simple market. If you can't decide on the right size, use the classic version.

The optimal height of the beam is about two meters, the thickness of the plywood sheet is about three millimeters, and its size is one hundred by sixty centimeters.

Main Process

Decide on the height of the easel, the comfort of your work depends on the correct selection of this characteristic. Remember that you can draw both sitting and standing. Much depends on how this process will be carried out. Once the height is determined, slats can be separated from the wooden blocks, which will be used as legs for the stand. It is very important that all elements are the same size. The rest of the bars are usually used to fasten the legs of the music stand together. The dimensions of such fasteners in width should be identical with the plywood sheet. The legs, as usual, are connected in the middle and in their upper part. Bolts, screws, wooden caps and even glue can act as connecting elements. To give the structure additional strength, it is recommended to use several methods at once.

A few words at the end

If necessary, another horizontal ruler is attached to the easel, on which a sheet of plywood can be fixed. If desired, it will be possible to store the minimum necessary set of tools on it. The finished stand can be treated with acrylic paint or a special varnish.

As you can see, making an easel with your own hands is not difficult at all, but it is very exciting.
