On August 17, 1969, one of the most powerful hurricanes in history, called "Camilla", swept through the Mississippi River in the United States. As a result of the rampant elements, 248 people died. We will tell you about the most destructive and terrible hurricanes in the history of mankind.

Camilla

The main blow of this hurricane hit the United States. Camilla began as a tropical cyclone on August 5, 1969 off the west coast of Africa. On August 14 and 15, the vortex zone of action expanded, and the wind speed increased to 180 km / h. Having passed Cuba, the hurricane weakened a little: its speed decreased to 160 km / h. Meteorologists hoped that as the hurricane moved towards the southern United States, it might weaken further. But they were wrong. As soon as the Camilla crossed the Gulf of Mexico, the hurricane regained strength. He was awarded the 5th category. Before the hurricane hit Mississippi, on August 17, the meteorological service attempted to measure its speed, but to no avail. By the night of the same day, the Camilla reached the city of St. Louis Bay, Mississippi. The hurricane's "eye of the storm" was 19 km long. After reaching Virginia, the hurricane rained down on the state. An unexpected rainfall of 790 mm / hr caused the worst flooding in the state's history. The real power of the hurricane is still a mystery. During its passage through the territory of the states of Alabama and Mississippi, not a single meteorological device survived. The wind speed could exceed 340 km / h. 256 residents of the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Virginia went missing, of which 113 drowned during floods in Virginia. More than 8,931 people were injured. For the state of Virginia, the flooding was the worst disaster caused by Camilla. Heavy downpours caused mud slides, roads were blocked by fallen trees, washed out by streams of water, which turned them into canals. More than 120 bridges, thousands of houses were destroyed by water. Property damage from Hurricane Camilla was estimated at $ 6 billion.

San Calixto.

This hurricane is also called the Great hurricane. It is a tropical cyclone of enormous power that raged in the fall of 1780 near the Caribbean archipelago. It became the deadliest hurricane ever known. According to the documents of that time, it is known about at least 22 thousand dead, and maybe more. The Great Hurricane hit the islands of the Caribbean, from Newfoundland to Barbados, passed Haiti and destroyed up to 95% of all buildings. The tidal wave caused by the hurricane, like a powerful tsunami, passed through some islands, sometimes reaching 7-8 meters in height. She demolished absolutely everything in her path. Many ships were sunk both in port bays and at some distance from the coast. Part of the French and British fleets, which took part in the US Civil War, went under water. About a hundred ships ran aground in the water area. Eyewitnesses said that strong winds tore bark from tree trunks before knocking them down. According to the findings of scientists, the wind speed was then at least 350 kilometers per hour.

Mitch.

The hurricane, dubbed Mitch, swept across the Atlantic Basin in October 1998. Meteorologists have assigned it the fifth category, the highest. Wind gusts then reached 320 kilometers per hour. The hurricane affected the territories of Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. He completely devastated them and took the lives of 20 thousand people. Most of the people died from mudflows, strong winds and tidal waves, which rose up to 6 meters in height. More than a million people were left homeless, and hundreds needed drinking water and medicines. It even led to an increase in infectious diseases.

Katrina.

Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive in U.S. history and also one of the 5 deadliest ever recorded. More than 80% of New Orleans was flooded with water. The hurricane struck in 2005 on the east coast of the United States. Despite the weather reports, people simply did not have time to prepare for the disaster. The damage amounted to $ 80 billion, the hurricane claimed 1,836 lives, 705 are still missing. Another half a million were left homeless. Moreover, approximately 80% of the area of New Orleans was flooded. In addition, marauders took advantage of the natural disaster, and the police were powerless. It is noteworthy that at this time the rating of President George W. Bush fell to 38%.

Andrew.

Hurricane Andrew in 1992 brought destruction and death to the northwestern Bahamas, southern Florida and southwestern Louisiana. 26 people died directly from the impact of the hurricane, and 39 people from its consequences. Officially, Andrew caused $ 26.5 billion in damage, although some sources claim that the damage was actually at least $ 34 billion.

Bloch cyclone.

In 1970, Cyclone Bhola hit East Pakistan (today Bangladesh) and West Bengal in India. The peak of the cyclone was on November 12, 1970. 300 - 500 thousand people died during the impact of the cyclone, although the exact number of deaths from the rampant elements is unknown. This cyclone was relatively small in terms of wind strength and speed; it was assigned category 3 hurricane. The destructive force of this storm was in the huge amount of precipitation. Most of the islands in the Ganges delta were flooded. Villages and crops were literally washed away from the face of the earth.

Kenna.

On October 25, 2002, the hurricane, which was subsequently awarded Category 5, reached the city of Nayarit. The wind force exceeded 250 kilometers per hour, lifting the shafts of ocean water to a height of 4 meters. The village of San Blas was badly damaged, where 75% of all buildings were damaged, trees were uprooted in the streets. Access roads, power lines and pipelines were destroyed. The ships that decided to wait out the hurricane in the port of San Blas were not saved either. Almost all of them were washed ashore. surprisingly, there were no casualties. And all because the meteorologists had calculated Kenna's trajectory in advance. Most of San Blas' 12,000 population was evacuated in advance.

Galveston.

A hurricane hit the Texas city of Galveston on September 8, 1900. The wind speed was 200-215 kilometers per hour, the hurricane was assigned category 4. He destroyed over 3,600 houses. It was this hurricane that became the deadliest natural disaster in the United States, it claimed 6 thousand lives. The total damage exceeded $ 20 million at the 1900 exchange rate.

Iniki.

It is the most powerful hurricane in Hawaii in human history. At peak intensity, the wind speed reached 235 km / h, the hurricane was assigned category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. September 11, 1992 was the peak of the hurricane. Six people died, but the destruction was catastrophic for the small island. The damage totaled over $ 1.8 billion.

Typhoon Nina.

In China, typhoons are not uncommon, but Typhoon Nina in 1975 was the most destructive. Then the force of the wind broke through the Bankyao Dam, causing water to rush into settlements... Other dams have collapsed in China. The number of victims is estimated from 100 to 230 thousand.

When you are reliably protected by the walls of your home, it is difficult to believe that the wind can kill a person. But this is exactly what happens when it comes to tornadoes. The most destructive tornadoes in history, which we will now tell you about, claimed hundreds of human lives in a matter of minutes.

10. Great tornado in Natchez, USA

The death toll: 317 people.

It is believed to be the only tornado in the United States that killed more people than suffered. The tornado occurred in May 1840, it walked right along the Mississippi River, tearing trees from both banks. It is not surprising that most of the victims of the disaster were on flat-bottomed boats. The number of wounded reached 109 people.

However, the real number of those killed by the Great Tornado may be much higher, because the death of slaves was not included in the general sad account.

9. Tornado Narail Magura, Bangladesh

The death toll: about 500 people.

The first but not the last tornado "hails" from Bangladesh in the ranking of the worst tornadoes of all time. In 1964, the rage of the elements devastated two cities and seven settlements, and 400 people from the village of Bhabanipur were never found and are considered dead.

8. Tornado in Comoros, Africa

The death toll: over 500 people.

One of the poorest countries in the world and a former French colony in the middle of the 20th century (in 1951) survived the blow of a giant tornado. It originated above the surface of the water, and then, gaining strength and intensity, made it to land, scattered light buildings like chips and killed about 500 people, both Aboriginal and visiting French.

Other details of this incident are unknown as the island nation was still under foreign control at the time.

7. Sicilian tornado, Italy

Death toll: approximately 600.

Over the years, no one will say how many human lives this terrible tornado took. Like the tornado from the Comoros, the Sicilian one originated above the surface of the water, and only then "came" to land.

Perhaps it was not one, but two tornadoes at once, which merged into a "megatornado". This is one of the hypotheses of why such a large number of people died from a tornado in Sicily. local residents.

6. Tornado La Valetta, Malta

The death toll: about 600 people.

The island of Malta is usually associated with a pleasant vacation, sun, sea, but not with horror and destruction. But it turns out that hellish days also happen in the earthly paradise. One of them came out on September 23, 1551 or 1556 (different sources indicate different years).

Having arisen over the Mediterranean Sea, the tornado moved towards the Grand Harbor Bay. During the tornado rampage, at least four ships of the Order of Malta were overturned, and many others were badly damaged. But even more than the courts went to the residents of Malta, many of whom died, and the exact number of injured is unknown.

Despite the name of the tornado, the capital of Malta - Valletta - did not exist at that time, since the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta personally laid the foundation stone on March 28, 1566, ten to fifteen years after the disaster.

5. Tornado in Dhaka, Bangladesh (at the time of the incident - Pakistan)

The death toll: 660 people.

In 1969, when the city of Dhaka was still under the jurisdiction of Pakistan, and not Bangladesh, a terrible tornado swept through its northeastern, densely populated suburb.

He killed approximately 660 people, and the number of injured reached 4,000. But as terrible as the tragedy was, it was only one of two deadly tornadoes that struck Bangladesh on April 14, 1969.

A second tornado appeared in the Comilla area of Chittagong, Bangladesh, on the same day. Both tornadoes were part of the same storm system, but separated from each other.

If we consider the total number of deaths (883 people) from two tornadoes, then this day is one of the deadliest in world history.

4. Tornado Manikganj-Singair-Nawabganj, Bangladesh

The death toll: 681 people.

One of the most destructive tornadoes was named after the three main areas that it destroyed on April 17, 1973. In all, the tornado destroyed most of the nine cities.

In some unofficial lists, the death toll reaches 1,000. According to reports from the time, the two tornadoes merged into one super-cyclone that swept across most of Bangladesh.

3. Tornado of three states, USA

The death toll: 695 people.

Considering big number the victims of this tornado is considered the most deadly in US history. And its 352-kilometer journey through Missouri, Indiana and Illinois is the longest tornado path in world history.

The death toll for March 18, 1925 was 695 people, more than two thousand were injured, and 15 thousand houses were destroyed. Several small towns (like De Soto and Parrish) were completely devastated. Most deaths were recorded in southern Illinois.

There was no effective system disaster warnings, and people were taken by surprise. In addition, a very fast moving tornado at times had an unusual appearance. Witnesses have often described the three-state tornadoes as amorphous rolling fog or boiling clouds on the ground, and many people did not sense danger until it was too late to escape. It was also reported that the tornado's funnel was sometimes obscured by a cloud of dust and debris, making it obscure and less recognizable.

2. Tornado Madarganj-Mrizapur, Bangladesh

The death toll: about 700 people.

In the small state of Bangladesh, dangerous tornadoes are not uncommon. But the one that hit the country on May 13, 1996, became one of the most catastrophic in the entire history of the country. The exact number of injured is unknown, and in terms of the number of deaths, this tornado was the second most deadly in history.

1. Tornado Daulatpur-Saturia, Bangladesh

The death toll: about 1300 people.

On April 26, 1989, the worst tornado in human history appeared in the Manikganj area in central Bangladesh. Within 6 km², countless trees were uprooted in its path, and all dwellings within this area were completely destroyed.

The force of the resulting wind ranged from 180 to 350 km / h. According to experts, the width of the tornado reached incredible dimensions - 1.5 km, and it passed through the poor regions of the country, leaving a path of death and chaos 80 km long. In addition to the huge number of deaths, 12 thousand people were injured, and 80 thousand were left homeless.

“I saw black clouds gathering in the sky,” said Saida Begum, a 30-year-old resident of Saturia. "After a few minutes, I found myself flying with my home."

Tornado season in Bangladesh is not very long, but it is extremely deadly. This is due to the lack of a sophisticated warning system, as well as the lack of shelter from tornadoes and the small number of buildings that can withstand devastating winds. The fact that the Daulatpur-Saturia tornado struck in April was not a surprise. It was at this time that the peak of the appearance of tornadoes occurred in the country, especially in the district of Manikganj, a severe drought raged for six months, which could accelerate the formation of tornadoes.

Few people will be happy with hot, dry, calm weather. But even less joy is the strong gusts of wind, knocking people down, destroying everything around. It is such a squally wind that is called a hurricane. Its speed can reach 300 meters per second. In this article, we will talk about which of the most powerful hurricanes in the world have caused significant damage to people and claimed lives.

What is a hurricane

A hurricane is a strong wind, the speed of which is much higher than 32.6 meters per second. In the southern hemisphere of the planet, the wind blows clockwise, and in the northern one - in the opposite direction, that is, against.

Typhoon, cyclone, storm and breeze are propagated definitions of hurricane. Hydrometeorological experts have multiplied the concept of the word "hurricane" in order to simplify the work. Often, hurricanes and cyclones get names similar to female names, but in the modern world, this rule changes slightly so that there is no noticeable discrimination.

The largest hurricanes in the world have caused impressive damage to humanity, entailed a huge number of victims and damage. This is the most powerful you can imagine. Hurricanes have tremendous energy.

Gusts of wind demolish buildings, destroy crops, disrupt the operation of power lines and water pipes, damage transport highways, uproot trees, and cause accidents. The worst hurricanes in the world cause such damage. The list and statistics of the most powerful natural disasters of our time are replenished with new cyclones every year.

Hurricane classification

There is no standard hurricane classification. There are only two groups of them: a vortex storm and a streaming hurricane.

With a vortex storm, funnel-shaped gusts appear, which are caused by the activity of cyclones and spread over a large area. In winter, snow storms, which are called blizzards or blizzards, prevail.

A torrent hurricane does not travel as far as a vortex storm. He is conditioned and significantly inferior to his "fellow". There are jet and runoff hurricanes. A jet storm is characterized by a horizontal flow, while a runoff storm is characterized by a vertical one.

Hurricane Matthew

The Atlantic hurricane, dubbed "Matthew", originated on African shores on September 22, 2016. The cyclone was gaining strength, moving towards Florida. On October 6, the hurricane eased slightly, affecting a small portion of the Bahamas and Miami. The next day, the storm wind reappeared with a vengeance, its gusts reaching 220 kilometers per hour. This mark indicated the 5th hurricane power category on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It should be noted that the 5th category is the highest mark.

It is impossible to overestimate the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. The disaster turned out to be at least 877 people, 350 thousand were left homeless and without means of survival. 3.5 thousand buildings were destroyed. Matthew, which hit Florida in 2016, is the worst hurricane in the world this decade. Photos of the consequences prove this.

Citizens affected by the disaster were provided with temporary housing or a place in a shelter. Health workers say cholera outbreaks are possible in the near future, as the water is contaminated.

Myanmar: Hurricane Nargis

The worst hurricanes in the world in the past 10 years have caused irreparable losses from which people cannot recover to this day. Cyclone Nargis, which hit Myanmar in 2008, became such a disaster.

People were not notified in time about the impending disaster, so they could not prepare. In addition, the country's government at first refused any assistance from other states.

But after a certain amount of time, humanitarian goods were still allowed to enter, and people received the necessary assistance.

Myanmar is the poorest country, with an annual income of only $ 200 per citizen. Hurricane Nargis dealt a crushing blow not only to the citizens of the country, but also to the state economy as a whole.

Cuba and Hurricane Sandi

The hurricane dubbed Sandy struck southeastern Cuba on October 25, 2012. The wind speed exceeded 183 meters per hour. A large number of people were affected. In Jamaica, a man died from a boulder that fell from the sky. In Haiti, a stream carried away a woman who was never found. As a result of the disaster, about 200 people died and more than 130,000 buildings were destroyed.

Sandi is the 18th tropical storm in a decade. Before hitting Cuba, the hurricane intensified almost to the second category.

Looking at the photo of the cyclone, we can say with accuracy that "Sandy" and the rest of the strongest hurricanes in the world over the past 10 years have become the only terrifying element in their lives for people.

Hurricane Ike

A tropical storm called Ike hit the United States of America in 2008. The hurricane was not very strong, but quite impressive in its scale. The cyclone originated in the southeast of the American coast. Meteorologists were preparing for the 5th highest hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Approaching 135 kilometers per hour. But gradually the wind died down, and the elements weakened.

Texas hit hardest, especially the small town of Galveston. An interesting fact is that this town has already felt the power of the strongest hurricane of the 20th century.

The Texas authorities carried out a mass evacuation of people, but most of the citizens did not want to leave their homes. The authorities were prepared for the disaster to cause tremendous damage and cause floods, as is often the case.

Severe consequences, from which people do not recover immediately, entail the worst hurricanes in the world. The names of many of them will forever remain in the memory of the affected people.

It is important to know

Each country suffers from the effects of cyclones to varying degrees. Therefore, it is so important to know certain rules of behavior during a storm. In no case should you:

 • climb a hill, bridge, power lines;
 • stay near poles, trees, flammable substances and pesticides;
 • hide from the wind behind billboards, signs, banners;
 • being in a damaged building, as you know, the strongest hurricanes in the world easily destroy buildings;
 • use electrical appliances.

After the wind dies down, it is dangerous:

 • go to the broken wires;
 • touch swaying signs, banners, billboards;
 • be in the house in case of power disturbances;
 • use electrical appliances;
 • if there is a thunderstorm, do not touch electrical appliances to avoid electric discharge.

Did you know that the force of destructiveness of a hurricane can lead to the fact that the name assigned to the cyclone will be deleted from the list of names that can have the most powerful hurricanes in the world? For example, hurricane Katrin of 2005 fell under this rule, and meteorologists will never use this name ever again.

In our strip, tornadoes are very rare, but there are countries that are less fortunate. They even write children's fairy tales about tornadoes (remember at least "The Wizard of Oz"). Where do the largest cataclysms happen, and most importantly, what consequences do they leave behind?

Perhaps this tornado was not as strong as possible (we will talk about the scale by which the strength of a tornado is assessed below), but it turned out to be the most violent in the history of mankind. He walked through the cities Saturia and Daulatpur in Bangladesh.

"Cardboard" houses of poor neighborhoods and cars, he lifted into the air instantly, because of which perished - even scary to say! - about 1300 people. And this - in a few minutes! The injured turned out to be even more - 12 thousand. Those who did not suffer (about 80 thousand people) cannot be envied either - they were left homeless and without means of subsistence ...

The largest tornadoes that shocked the world

 1. Mrizapur and Madarganj (Republic of Bangladesh), 1996... The tornado destroyed about 80 thousand houses and killed 700 people. And at the same time, none of the scientists was able to warn of the threat, so unexpectedly a natural disaster struck these two cities.
 2. Dhaka city(it now belongs to Bangladesh, but in 1969 was part of East Pakistan). Its eastern and northern parts suffered from a tornado that killed 660 and maimed 4 thousand people. This vortex had a twin brother. The tornadoes were born in the same storm system, but they split up. The second tornado hit the Comilla area, killing 223 people.
 3. Yangtze River (China), Summer 2015... Scientists managed to sound the alarm, and most of the ships left the territory of the incipient hurricane. Unfortunately, except for one large cruise ship. All of its 442 passengers were killed.

Tornadoes in America

The inhabitants of this country so often encounter tornadoes that they even came up with a classification for them.

 • F0 - weak, can knock down an antenna, chimney, a couple of branches, or knock down a thin dry tree.
 • F1 - medium, easily knocks out windows and pulls off roofs, can throw a moving car into a ditch.
 • F2 - large, can destroy a wooden house, carry away a car, turn over a carriage.
 • F3 - serious, destroys houses, bends metal hangars, uproots trees (almost all), lifts a car into the air, can turn a train over.
 • F4 is devastating, can grind an entire street, lift many objects into the air, can carry away a car or a whole train.
 • F5 - destroying, tearing houses to the foundation, circling cars. It is interesting that such a tornado goes only along a narrow "path" from 10 to 500 meters.

Oklahoma is considered the largest risk zone - here such atmospheric phenomena occur more often than anywhere else on Earth. Every year in North America, there are about a thousand eddies ... And this is like a magnet attracts extremals.

5 most destructive tornadoes in the United States

 1. Tornado of three states: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, 03/18/1925... A tornado of the "destroying" class, around which 8 more "children" were spinning. Despite the name, this natural disaster affected 4 more American states, for a total of seven. In three and a half hours, the funnel procession left 50 thousand homeless. The wind speed was 100 kilometers per hour. There were many victims: almost 700 people died, about 2 thousand were taken to hospitals.
 2. Tupelo (Mississippi) and Gainesville (Georgia), 04/05/1936... Starting in Mississippi, the tornado was Category 5. Having reached Georgia, he calmed down a bit, "kinder" to the 4th category, but still was terrible. In the first city, he killed 203 people and wounded more than one and a half thousand (although most likely there were much more victims - this data was taken from the newspapers of that time, and they wrote only about the white population; how many blacks suffered is unknown). It is noteworthy that among the survivors was little Elvis Presley - he was only one year old that year. In the second city, 216 people died (some of the victims were not found, so they were declared missing).
 3. "The Beast", Oklahoma City, 05/03/1999... The whirlwind raged for about 1.5 hours. But vigilant meteorologists managed to record the birth of a hurricane at 4 a.m. and warn the population, so the inhabitants of the village of Bridge Creek (from which almost nothing was left a little later), and then the population of the city of Oklahoma began a hasty retreat. The wind force was surprisingly great - 510 kilometers per hour. The tornado traveled 61 kilometers and demolished about eight thousand houses. The death toll is 38 people.
 4. Moore, Oklahoma, 05/20/2013... The tornado "processed" an area 27 km long and 3 km wide. A strong wind raged (267 kilometers per hour), and for quite a long time - 40 minutes. But thanks to the efforts of local scientists, the town of 56 thousand people managed to evacuate, so that relatively few people died - 24 people. Well, 230 more were injured.
 5. Wichita Falls, TX 04/02/1958... The wind speed of this natural disaster was even entered in the Guinness Book of Records - still, 450 kilometers per hour! He lifted houses into the air, "driving" through the town, like a huge skating rink. The things that he "stole" could later be found at a great distance from Wichita Falls. Fortunately, not so many people were injured - 7 people died, 100 were maimed. But the insurance companies had a hard time: the tornado "crumbled" the property into 15 "lemons".

Is it possible to meet a tornado in Europe?

Yes, although rarely. From 1944 to 1998 on the territory of the countries the former USSR scientists have recorded 264 tornadoes, most of which were weak. Over the past 130 years, F3-class eddies have occurred on our lands only 13 times and F4-class eddies twice.

Here are some memorable tornadoes from the recent past:

 • In 2002, a tornado hit the Crimean village of Vypasnoye. He demolished about half of the houses, seven people were seriously injured. The air whirlwind sucked in domestic birds - chickens, ducks, turkeys, throwing them outside the village. It is noteworthy that they were all completely plucked by the wind.
 • In the same 2002, a giant crater (200 meters across, 3 kilometers high) was formed in the Krasnodar Territory. About 58 people died.
 • In 1940, in the Gorky region, a tornado dug up the ground in which an old treasure was hidden. As it began to subside, gold coins began to fall on the heads of local residents.

What other tornadoes are there?

The above are the most typical air tornadoes. And there is also:

 • Aquatic... Sometimes the air "whirligig" rises not over land, but over water, and begins to circle it. If it turns out to be a river or lake, the water can be sucked to the bottom. If the sea, fish, jellyfish rise into the air. They can be thrown far on land, and it looks quite original - in the city suddenly starts to rain from frogs or herring.
 • Mud... Here, too, everything is simple - swamp mud or silt rises into the air ... We do not envy the people on whom it then falls!
 • Fiery... They are caused by strong fires, less often - by volcanic eruptions. One of these happened relatively recently, in 2000, in the city of Winkler (Canada). A fire broke out at the linen factory, and it began nowhere more trite - with the ignition of a warehouse wooden partition. In less than an hour, the fire engulfed the tons of flax stored there, and the air heated to 500 degrees. From the difference in pressure, a vortex was formed, which "jumped out" from the factory and began to move along the valley. He threw a moving truck 135 meters away - the driver, unfortunately, died.

But of course, in the photo it all looks impressive, but what tornadoes and tornadoes look like in real life? Extremals from America who call themselves tornado hunters will help us find out about this. They are ready to climb the very hell into hell, but shoot the most impressive shots, and, of course, post them on YouTube. And yet, yes, the birth of a tornado, as well as a whirlwind in all its glory, is something indescribable!

What is a tornado?

A tornado, or tornado, is an atmospheric vortex that occurs in a rain or thundercloud. It looks like a cloud funnel that often descends to the very ground.

Tornadoes spread with great speed and are capable of causing considerable destruction. For most of them, the wind speed does not exceed 170 km per hour, but some eddies can move at speeds up to 500 km per hour.

Tornadoes occur on all continents of the planet, but most often, especially in the United States.

Tornado in Daulatpur and Saturia

The tornado that struck Bangladesh on April 26, 1989 is considered the most deadly in history. This is one of the countries where, along with the United States and Canada, tornadoes occur quite often.

The tornado with a radius of more than 1.5 km traveled 80 km and affected the Manikganj district, which is located in the center of the country in the Dhaka region. The cities of Daulatpur and Saturia suffered the most. The tornado claimed the lives of 1.3 thousand people, 12 thousand were injured.

The tornado was so devastating that it easily lifted into the air and destroyed the homes of local residents in poor areas of Bangladesh. Some cities were completely destroyed. As many as 80 thousand people were left homeless.

Tornadoes in Pakistan

A terrible tornado in 1969 swept through the territory of eastern Pakistan, which is now the territory of Bangladesh. The city of Dhaka was seriously affected by it. More than 660 people were killed, about 4 thousand were injured.

On the same day, another tornado occurred in Comilla County, Chittagong Province, Bangladesh. More than 220 people died. The tornado swept through the densely populated area, so there were so many casualties.

Tornado "Three-State"

In the country of the tornado of the United States, the most terrible consequences were produced by the Three State on March 18, 1925. It went from southeast Missouri through south Illinois to southwest Indiana.

About 700 people died, 2 thousand were injured. Fifteen thousand houses were destroyed, many were left without shelter and food. Cases of looting and theft of property of the victims were recorded. Some of the settlements destroyed by this tornado have never been rebuilt.

Tornado in Mirzapur

Another incredible tornado hit Bangladesh on May 15, 1996. It went from the city of Madarganj in the north of the country to the city of Mirzapur in the central part.

About 700 people became victims of this tornado, many people were lifted into the air to a height of more than a kilometer. 30 thousand houses were destroyed.

Tornado in the Dhaka region

The five most destructive tornadoes include another deadly tornado that swept across Bangladesh on April 17, 1973. It affected the cities of Manikganj and Singair in central Bangladesh, as well as the city of Nawabganj in the west of the country.

The tornado tragically killed about 700 people. The villages that were on his way - 100 km, were completely destroyed. Almost all the houses in them were lifted into the air and carried away by tornadoes.
