His Holiness Patriarch Kirill consecrated the Church of Hieromartyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', in the Krylatsky city of Moscow

Hieromartyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', a steadfast defender of the Russian State and the Orthodox faith

Hieromartyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', is revered as a great intercessor and intercessor for the Russian land, as a tireless fighter against Polish intervention in the Time of Troubles. It was he who was one of the main ideological inspirers of the creation of the people's militia. Thanks to his appeals and prayers, the Russian people, led by Minin and Pozharsky, cleared the country of foreign invaders and placed the Russian tsar on the throne.

The future Patriarch Hermogenes was born in 1530. He came from the Don Cossacks and in baptism was named Yermolai. On May 13, 1589, he was consecrated bishop and became the first Metropolitan of Kazan. The activity of the new metropolitan was aimed primarily at spreading the Orthodox faith. In 1591, the saint personally gathered the newly baptized Tatars to the cathedral and for several days instructed them in Christian teaching.

Time of Troubles

During the Time of Troubles, when False Dmitry I ascended the throne, Metropolitan Hermogenes was included in the Senate. However, the “tsar” failed to find support from the metropolitan, who acted as an ardent opponent of False Dmitry and, in particular, strongly condemned his marriage to the daughter of a Polish aristocrat, Marina Mnishek, who refused to convert to Orthodoxy. False Dmitry I ordered the expulsion of the Metropolitan from Moscow. However, the impostor was deposed very soon, as was Patriarch Ignatius who supported him.

On July 3, 1606, Metropolitan Hermogenes, a firm defender of the Orthodox faith, was elevated by the Council of Bishops to the Patriarchal Throne in the Moscow Assumption Cathedral.

The patriarchate of Hermogenes fell on the Time of Troubles: Polish and Lithuanian troops ravaged Russian cities and sought to capture the capital, Tatars rampaged in the south, and a civil war was going on. The Moscow boyars were ready to go over to the side of Poland, to install the Polish prince Vladislav Sigismundovich as the Russian tsar and demanded blessings from Patriarch Hermogenes for this. The saint desperately resisted the treacherous plans to let the Polish army into Moscow. However, on the night of September 21, 1610, the boyars secretly opened the gates of the Kremlin to the enemies.

The Patriarch began to write and send out numerous appeals throughout Russia, in which he called on the Russian people to unite in the fight against foreign invaders. The uncompromising position of the patriarch caused persecution - Saint Hermogenes was defrocked and imprisoned in the Chudov Monastery.

The imprisonment did not shake the firmness of the Russian saint. His fiery speech continued to strengthen the people in the struggle for the national independence of the state. Having learned about the organization of the militia by Minin and Pozharsky, the Poles came to the patriarch in prison and demanded that he stop the liberation movement. The answer of the holy martyr was categorical: “Blessed be those who go to cleanse the Muscovite state, and you, cursed Moscow traitors, be damned.” The anger of impotence seized the Poles. Saint Hermogenes was starved to death. The patriarch reposed on March 2, 1612.

Eight months later, on November 6, the militia solemnly entered the Kremlin. The country was saved from a national catastrophe thanks to the prayers of the saint and the courage of the Russian people.

In 1654 the body of the holy martyr was transferred from the Chudov Monastery to the Moscow Assumption Cathedral.

Appearance of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

In 1579, the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was found in Kazan. With the blessing of the bishop, the saint transferred the newly-appeared icon to the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Possessing an uncommon literary talent, he himself compiled a story about the appearance of the miraculous icon and the miracles performed from it, and also wrote a service in honor of the holiday. Shortly after receiving the Kazan Icon, Priest Yermolai took monastic vows with the name Hermogen and in 1582 was elected archimandrite of the Transfiguration Monastery in Kazan.

Educational activities

The saint also took care of the education of the population and the spread of books. With his blessing, a printing house was set up in Kazan (there were three of them in Russia by that time). Metropolitan Hermogenes himself was a man of outstanding intelligence and erudition. “Greatly adorned with wisdom and graceful in book teaching,” contemporaries said about him.

Miracles and Glory

For three centuries, the memory of Patriarch Hermogenes as a holy martyr was passed down from generation to generation, and popular faith in him grew as an intercessor and prayer book for the Russian land at the Throne of the Almighty. In the difficult years of disasters, the prayerful thought of the people turned to the memory of the hero-patriarch. The Russian people went to his tomb with their sorrows, illnesses and illnesses, reverently calling for help from St. Hermogenes. Through his prayers, miracles and healings unceasingly occurred: one patient came to the Assumption Cathedral on crutches, but, having venerated the reliquary with relics, he was healed. A miracle also happened to another paralyzed man. They brought him on a towel to the shrine of the holy martyr, and the patient received complete healing.

Troparion, tone 8

The Russian lands are the chief altar, / and the vigilant prayer book for her! / Having laid down your soul for the faith of Christ and your flock, / you established our state / and delivered our country from wickedness. / The same cry to you: / save us with your prayers, holy martyr Hermogenes, our father.

“We plan to complete the landscaping of the territory in early November. The temple complex should be put into operation before the end of the year,” said V. Resin.

According to him, the construction of the church began in 2013, the year of the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow and All Rus'. It is designed for 200 parishioners.

The sanctuary is single-dome, quadrangular, with three apses (a lower ledge of the building adjoining the main volume). From the side of the western entrance, a belfry with a small dome was added.

A monument was erected near the main building of the temple complex. There is a small park on the site. In addition, a folk park appeared next to the temple complex.

“Where there is a temple, it should be beautiful. Therefore, the prefecture is trying to equip parks or green areas next to the new churches,” said the deputy prefect of ZAO Victor Klimenko.

Recall that the program for the construction of two hundred Orthodox churches ("Program - 200") is deployed in all administrative districts of the capital, except for the Central. Its goal is to provide densely populated areas of the city with temples within walking distance.

The program is implemented entirely on donations from citizens and organizations. To collect incoming funds, a charitable Foundation for Supporting the Construction of Churches in the City of Moscow was created, co-chaired by the Mayor of Moscow S. ergey sobyanin and Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Kirill.

On behalf of the Mayor of Moscow, the program is supervised by the mayor's adviser, adviser on the construction of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vladimir Resin - he is the chairman of the fund's working group.
