Father Benjamin serves in one of the churches of the Root Hermitage. Several times a week the priest holds prayer services, which attract many people. In the summer, services are often held on the street, since everyone who wants to attend cannot fit in the tiny church. Parishioners are sure that the priest really heals people - with his prayers he removes the damage sent to them.

“These are all inventions of the people,” says Father Veniamin. - How can a simple priest heal people? People came up with this all on their own. For example, a person, attending my prayer services, came to faith. The Lord heard his prayers and helped him get rid of his illness. This man comes home and says: “I attended the prayer services of Father Benjamin, and he removed the spell from me.” This stupid news immediately spreads among friends and family. And they say: “But he really heals.” But no one will understand - God helps everyone. And I’m just trying to convey the Word of God to people.

The “possessed” moo, meow and swear at the priest

During prayer services, Father Benjamin always approaches each parishioner and sprinkles him with holy water. Some begin to scream and cry furiously, others begin to meow, moo, and bark. And some even swear at the priest.

I've had to listen to so much already! They threatened to kill me and maim me. But I know that people do not wish me harm. True, after prayers I get a little tired,” says the priest.

Sins are passed on to children from their parents.

You can also meet children at prayer services with the priest. Seeing the holy water and smelling the incense, some of them, just like adults, begin to scream.

This all happens because people have left the faith. Many people commit sinful acts without even thinking about the consequences. But this can be passed on for generations. “Lately, more and more children are coming to me for prayer services,” the priest complains. According to the priest, anyone can come to him for a prayer service without fear for their health.

Actually, I believe that there are no healthy and sinless people. But still, evil spirits cannot move from one person to another. The Lord sends illnesses to people because of their sins. To redeem them, you need to come to faith: keep fasts, pray daily, ask God for help, advises Father Benjamin.

According to the priest, family quarrels also, as a rule, occur due to the fact that the spouses have sinned. When people come to faith, scandals stop.

Their elderly parents often come to pray for such people, because the spouses themselves do not consider it necessary to go to church, since they do not believe in anything. Of course, the Lord hears the prayers of their relatives, but is in no hurry to help those who are indifferent to the faith, the priest believes. If it is not possible to go to church, he advises praying at home.

People don’t remember what happened to them during the prayer service

After each prayer service, people come up to Father Benjamin to thank him for the healing.

Father Benjamin helped me a lot. I was hexed a few years ago. Friends advised me to go to the Root Hermitage. For several months I went here every week for prayer services. My friend, who accompanied me, later told me that when Father Benjamin came up to me and sprinkled me with holy water, I began to scream. I couldn’t even believe that this could happen to me. After all, when I went outside, I didn’t remember anything. But I saw how others behaved during prayer services. Now, thank God, everything has passed for me,” a parishioner admitted to a Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent, who asked not to use her name.

When the woman told the priest himself about the healing, he frowned:

People like this often come up to me. I really don't like this. I immediately understand that the person has not yet come to faith. And I begin to explain again that it is not me who helps, but the Lord.

Seemingly respectable people here shout in inhuman voices, and children with angelic faces swear like movers. “The monks at the prayer service reveal our dark side,” says 33-year-old Rita, who arrived here from the south of Russia, with conviction, and her black eyes look as if they are taking an x-ray of my soul. “I went through this too - I screamed and fainted when they sprinkled holy water on me. And then I didn’t even want to believe that this was happening to me. But I know my sin - I am angry. There is darkness in everyone, only in some there is more, in others less. At such moments it comes out.” According to popular rumor, here, in the monastery of the Root Hermitage, “reprimands” and “exorcism of demons” take place. Hundreds of people - of different incomes and varying strengths of faith - from many regions of Russia come here with the hope of getting rid of diseases. Now the parishioners are in alarm: they say that Bishop Herman of Kursk and Rylsk prohibits such rituals. It was, frankly speaking, scary to go to this place. Newspaper work in general is associated with all sorts of passions and temptations - in general, it is a testing ground for demons. What if they take it and climb out in front of all the honest people? After all, they tell all sorts of things about the local wonders... The path to the monastery is not immediately visible, but the residents of the village of Svoboda willingly show you. Where to go A row of houses opens up - and the city dweller begins to feel dizzy from the opening view. It is not without reason that monks are considered to be an expert in beauty. It seems that someone's giant hand has gathered the earth into folds like green velvet. The monastery is surrounded by pine and birch trees - according to popular wisdom, “in a birch forest to heal, in a pine forest to pray” (“and in a spruce forest to hang oneself”) True, those who come here for a prayer service for the sick - the priests themselves avoid the words “deduction”, “reading” - not up to beauty of the landscape. The prayer service begins at one o'clock in the afternoon, but people gather in the monastery church in advance - for an appointment, like at the reception desk of a clinic in the flu winter. An elderly woman writes in a thick notebook the names of “full-time students” - that is, those who came on their own, and “external students” - those for whom relatives and friends ask to pray. They immediately buy candles, give notes of health and repose, and make donations. On average, everyone leaves one hundred fifty to two hundred rubles in the church. The queue is mostly women 30-50 years old. There are almost no peaceful faces on which it would be written “Life is good!” They are mostly sad or preoccupied - as if in their greeting notes they would not miss someone from their relatives who had come from afar. There are fewer men - and you can immediately see by their gaze and gait who arrived here as a driver for their wife and mother-in-law, and who was brought by misfortune. Children's feet are stomping around the church - mothers took their babies with them. One pale boy was immediately seated on a bench, his nose began to bleed. “Father Benjamin served here before. Oh, and a strong father! - a woman more experienced in these matters enlightens me and several other newcomers. “Now he holds prayer services in the Root Hermitage itself, and here Father Nikita, his assistant, reads.” “This is the fourth time I’ve come here,” sighs another parishioner. – I’m suffering with my heart, I’m suffering from hypertension, I spent so much money on medicine... Doctors don’t help me. Now I’ve brought my daughter - she and her husband are not at odds, maybe someone has caused damage, you never know how many are envious?” All this time, sounds ranging from the murmur of a crane to the howl of a dog are heard throughout the church. They are made by a woman with a handkerchief in her mouth, who is hunched over and sitting on a bench by the window. Suddenly she jumps up, some force begins to twist her. The first thought is to take out your mobile phone and call an ambulance. A tall, thin parishioner touches my shoulder with her hand: I lingered for an inappropriately long time on someone else’s suffering, and this is not accepted here. A strong man, her relative, rushes to the woman, hugs her and carefully seats her in her seat. “The priest is coming!” - the parishioners whisper. Father Nikita enters and the prayer service begins. One hundred and fifty people were crammed into a room about one hundred meters in size. At the altar are those who clearly need help: the same woman with a handkerchief in her mouth, who is still hugged by a man, another “patient”, muttering something angrily under her breath... Against the background of the prayer rumble, vomiting sounds are heard every now and then : some parishioners, as if on an airplane, bring bags to their faces. It is believed that this - as well as constant yawning and marking time - is a sure sign that the demons lodged in a person are rushing out. A song to the Most Holy Theotokos sounds, which is picked up by dozens of voices. Father Nikita goes around those who have come and puts crosses in oil. At this moment, a piercingly thin voice - inhuman, but coming from a 40-year-old woman with an exhausted face - begins to hurl selective obscenities at a certain mother-in-law. Suddenly, right in front of me, a plump lady, supported by relatives on both sides, silently fainted. She lies on the floor until the end of the prayer service, and her companions look at each other with sorrowful faces. I feel stuffy, and I go to the window with the window slightly open. Father Nikita just started talking about demons - “go away,” “go away,” “from the soul, from the heart, from the mind, from the inside...” “I’m dry! I can't go out! - Next to me, a village pilgrim with a distorted face frantically beats herself on her sunken stomach and tries to cough up something. - Stuck! They sent it to the garden near the well!” And every time the priest says “Say your names,” she shouts angrily: “I’m Elizabeth!” After the prayer service, everyone lines up - Father Nikita lets them kiss the cross and sprinkles it with holy water. For some this is grace, for others - again screams and fainting. Then it’s time to ask the priest for advice. It is clear that he is very tired, sweat is running down his forehead, but he patiently talks with everyone. True, he didn’t talk to the journalist about the prayer service: “Sorry, I’m a simple monk, we are strict about this. You better go to Father Benjamin.” The priest is threatened with physical harm - subtitle: Hieromonk Veniamin, abbot of the Root Hermitage Monastery - one of the few priests who was allowed by Archbishop Herman of Kursk and Rylsk to exorcise demons. According to the Bishop, rituals called “deductions” are a temptation for priests to make easy money, so they should be prohibited. Only selected monks are entrusted with fighting demons at prayer services for the sick. “I’m already tired of explaining that I don’t proofread, but rumors are spreading, people are coming,” Father Veniamin admits in a conversation with an MK correspondent. – It’s not me who helps, but God! It’s even bad if people travel to holy places with the question: “Where would you get treatment?” They are not looking for God, but for those who heal. It’s disgusting to listen to Father Benjamin’s treatment. Ashamed before God. While people are looking for Fathers Benjamin, who are reading, they will not be healed. But it’s good that at least because of this they come to the prayer service. They need to be told that they need confession, communion, that only a righteous life will help them recover. If a person doesn’t go to church, proofread him, don’t proofread him, it won’t do any good. After all, why do people get sick? They have backslidden from God. First the soul suffers, then the body. – Is it difficult to serve a prayer service? - I've been doing this for eight years. At first, when there were few people, it was easy. And then, two days before the prayer service, fear began to appear: “Oh, maybe someone will serve?” Recently I gave one to serve, he collapsed, and could not come to the evening service - he had no strength. For those who hold prayer services for the sake of money, it is always easy for them. For those who serve for the Lord, it is hard work. You need to squeeze everything out of yourself to bring a person to realize why he lives on earth - to save his soul. I don’t even know how much money we collect from the prayer service, I haven’t counted it. Maybe for the better. But now we are supposed to keep strict records, so we will need to control it. – Why do people scream and faint? These are my personal observations: often unclean spirits try to convince the priest that he has special healing powers. They make people shout in order to seduce the priest - “This is what I can do!” - and lead to the underworld. Moreover, the unclean act through people who are already in their hands - for example, envious, proud, vengeful, unfaithful to their spouses. Sick children, susceptible to unclean spirits, suffer for their parents - for their sins, unbelief, and unmarried marriage. – Is it true that they threatened to kill you? “Sometimes they shout at services: “We will kill you!” One day a woman rushed at me with a bench in her hands. Another hit her on the cheek. And I applied the rule from the Gospel: I turned the other cheek. The woman fainted. I'm not sure if I did it out of humility... Maybe out of pride. Sometimes I think that maybe some people don’t benefit from being healed. For example, for those who will not go to God later - to confess, to receive communion. Therefore, I personally do not have a goal to heal people here. The main thing is that a person learns a righteous life. And the Lord will judge whether he should be healed or not. We cannot live without sorrows. They say: if a person has no sorrows, it’s even scary. Maybe it was the Lord who abandoned him. It is better that there are sorrows. We must be able to endure them humbly and patiently.

Many monasteries and churches are located on Russian soil. Each of them carries the richness of Russian spirituality for the Orthodox faith.

One of the beautiful monasteries of the Holy Spirit is located in the Kursk region. Here at the end of the 16th century a men's monastery was founded, which soon began to be called the Kursk Root Nativity of the Mother of God men's hermitage.

Location

The abode of enlightenment and miracle is located in a beautiful place, on the right bank of the Tuskar River. On the map of Russia, this is the Kursk region (that’s why the monastery is often called the Kursk-Korennaya monastery. However, sometimes it is also called the Korenskaya Pustosa - but this is incorrect).

Root Desert is located at Zlotoukha district, village. Freedom. You can get to the monastery by minibus, which departs from Dubrovinsky Street.

History of the monastery from the beginning of its foundation

According to legend, in 1295 there were dense impenetrable forests in this place. Two hunters, following the trail of the beast, came across a strange board, and turning it over, they discovered an icon.

And then a source of spring water came out of the ground. The hunters, deciding that this was a real sign of the wonderful properties of this place, left a sign there. Later they spread the news about the diva to all people.

It is important to know: After several years, a wooden chapel was built on that very spot.

The construction of the monastery itself came at a difficult time. During that historical period, Muscovite Rus' was subject to attack by the Crimean Tatars. Construction proceeded very slowly, because difficult conditions and lack of funding made it difficult to advance construction. However, the building was rebuilt; the founding date of the monastery is considered to be 1597.

After the death of Ivan the Terrible, there was no heir left. A time of troubles has arrived. Many contenders for the throne appeared, one of whom, False Dmitry, seized power in the country and personally installed himself on the throne. By his order, the main miraculous icon of the Mother of God was given to Moscow.

False Dmitry

There she stayed until the very end of the difficult time of troubles for Russia. The icon returned to its place only in 1618. This event became one of the turning points in history. It was marked by the opening of a new church, which was given the name “Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

In 1634, not the best time came for Russia again; the monastery again had to endure severe hardships. After the attack on Kursk by the Poles, the monastery was devastated. And already in 1643 there was a new raid on the city by the Crimean Tatars. However, despite the difficulties, the Kursk Hermitage managed to survive.

Only in 1701 this place was officially given the title of monastery, and a hostel for monks was opened. In addition, many other buildings were reconstructed. Two years later it came to the Nativity of the Theotokos Church. The old wooden building was replaced by a magnificent white stone building with two floors.

The important thing is that the building has survived to this day.

Seven years later, in 1708, it was decided to continue construction work. The most beautiful holy gates and a church with several altars were erected. One was given the name Transfiguration of the Lord, and the second was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. In 1713, the “Picturesque Spring” church was founded.

A new era in construction opened in 1860, when construction began on the magnificent cathedral, which was named the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, very soon the white streak in the life of Kursk Abbey and its inhabitants ended. The difficult years of the Soviet period were coming.

After the onset of Soviet power and the overthrow of Emperor Nicholas II, a difficult time came for the Orthodox Church in Rus'. It marked the destruction of all the principles and ideals of the faith, everything sacred that was in churches and cathedrals.

Most of them were plundered and destroyed or converted into civilian objects. The Root Desert did not escape this fate, for which the most difficult time in its entire existence had come. Already in 1918, it was renamed “Svoboda Shtetl,” and the holy monastery lost its right to officially represent the Orthodox Church, losing its legal force. In 1922, all valuables and shrines were removed from the monastery according to a special program developed by the All-Russian Central Executive Committee.

Despite this, some devoted people remained huddled in dugouts nearby, whiling away their days in prayer. Many buildings were destroyed brick by brick, including two tiers of the bell tower; the unique library was taken away along with holy icons and other valuables. The area adjacent to the monastery has also changed.

The unique Bogoroditskaya grove with relict oak forests was cut down, crops with medicinal herbs were destroyed. Later, a fountain was built on the site where the cathedral stood, and the Freedom camp was opened in the monastery building itself. During the war, many buildings were destroyed, and in those that remained intact, a vocational school was organized in 1947.

After all the hardships, only in 1989 they began a program to restore the holy, desecrated place. Through the enormous efforts of the Diocese of Kursk and Archbishop Juvenal, the legal significance of the monastery was returned to the Kursk Hermitage, and the land came under the authority of the Orthodox Church. Only in 1990 was the restoration completed. In honor of this solemn event, a religious procession was organized. It was the first in many decades of Soviet power.

Current state of the monastery

Thanks to the restoration work carried out, many buildings were created anew. They were restored from ruins.

Keep in mind: Many cultural values of the Russian Orthodox faith were returned to their ancestral land.

The consecration of the Root Hermitage was carried out in 1991 by Patriarch Alexy II in honor of the opening of the newly built Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Only in 2004 a meeting of the patriarchs was organized, at which a decision was made to resume the operation of the monastery.

To bring this great cause to life, a huge amount of money and effort was made. The Bishop's Hotel, where the guests of the monks were located, was revived. The beautiful painting of the holy gates was created from scratch. The Abbot's building was rebuilt, the main Cathedral underwent a complete reconstruction.

Gate of the Root Desert

In addition, significant work was carried out on the arrangement of the entire territory of the monastery, including the Temple of the Life-Giving Spring. Only in 2012 the restoration work was completely completed. In honor of this memorable event, the Liturgy was served and the rite of consecration was performed.

Take note: In this monastery, lectures are carried out, conducted by Father Nikita. These are special prayer rules that are performed over demon-possessed people. For the sake of idle curiosity, you should not attend these prayer services. All sufferers and their relatives must take a blessing from the priests to attend the readings.

The monastery of Seraphim of Sarov receives for special prayers for the sick - deductions - all who suffer from spiritual and physical infirmities, and desire, by the grace of God, to get rid of them.

Thus, the temples, the monastic monastery and the surrounding area were completely revived and restored, and all the premises were landscaped. Today there are four cathedrals in the monastery. All of them are in working order, despite this, on normal days services are conducted in only one. This is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On holidays, Liturgies are celebrated in other churches.

Description and architectural features

All existing churches of the Root Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Desert were built in the classical Russian style. White stone walls are decorated with golden domes on the towers and chapels.

Some buildings were erected quite recently. In their place there used to be wooden churches, and later simple stone buildings destroyed during the Soviet period. Thus, the Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring” was consecrated only in 2012 by Patriarch Alexy II.

The blue roofs of the building perfectly set off the golden domes. The interior decoration itself is made in the Byzantine style. Here you can see a beautiful decoration of frescoes and icons, many holy objects that were returned to their homeland after the revolution.

The beautiful architectural ensemble of the monastery, painted in a heavenly color, looks wonderful from anywhere in the city, especially from the banks of the Tuskar River.

Shrines of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Hermitage

One of the main shrines of this wonderful place is the “Sign” icon. It was this that hunters found in this place a long time ago, after which a temple was created here, and then a desert. The icon repeatedly showed miracles to the world and streamed myrrh, so it was almost immediately ranked among the miraculous.

Icon "The Sign"

Also here are the holy relics of the venerable Kiev-Pechersk and Optina elders. Thousands of pilgrims flock here to touch the holy remains.

River Tuskar and holy springs

The monastery is located near the Tuskar River. Many sources flow from it. Several of them can be considered saints. For example:

  • Source of the Great Martyr Pantelemon;
  • Source of Seraphim of Sarov;
  • Source of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker;
  • Source of the “Kazan” Icon of the Mother of God.

Thus, you will be able to touch holy water in several places at once and wander through the wonderful picturesque places on the territory of the monastery. To get to the very place where the main shrine was found - the “Sign” icon, because it was from that very place, according to legend, that the source began to flow.
